Tears for Fears and Spandau Ballet @ Sydney Entertainment Centre, 23 April 2010

On Friday night I stepped back to the 80s for the Tears for Fears/Spandau Ballet show at Sydney’s Entertainment Centre. Thankfully despite the years that had passed since these monster acts last graced our shores, nothing much has changed. From the enthusiastic crowd reactions to the high quality of the bands, it was as if we’d all never left the decade that fashion forgot.

Jack Jones opened the show with a low-key, yet utterly compelling set. It’s no secret that I love acoustic music, and hearing the songs he made famous with Southern Sons in this raw way was just beautiful. With his long scraggy mo and similarly unkempt hair Jack is a far cry from the man I swooned over all those years ago, but his voice has lost nothing over the years. It’s still as pure and strong as it ever was, and hits like “Hold Me In Your Arms” and “You Were There” really showed off his pipes. It’s a shame there were so many empty seats. 7 pm is an early start time for a weekday show, but I have a feeling the people who missed him might kick themselves.

Tears for Fears followed Jack with an energetic, hit-packed set. Within the first four songs we’d already heard “Mad World,” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” and “Sowing The Seeds of Love,” so I was beginning to wonder what else was left! But they played much longer, and while I wasn’t as familiar with most of the latter half of the set it was all brilliant stuff. Their modern take on “Woman in Chains,” complete with a freakishly feminine sounding male back-up singer in Oleta Adams’ place, was particularly incredible, as was the big closer, “Shout.” I wasn’t a massive Tears for Fears fan in the 80s, but these guys have converted me. The voices of Roland Orzabel and Curt Smith have lost nothing over the years, and they’re performing with as much energy and musical prowess as I’d expect from performers many years their junior.

Flicks Confess Paramore Crush with New Single “Hayley”

Brisbane pop-punk act Flicks are back with their new single “Hayley.”

The fun track is an ode to Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams. It imagines what the Flicks lads would do if they ever scored a date with their dream woman. And apparently it has the seal of approval from Hayley Williams’ real life squeeze, Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory!

“It was funny, because we met her boyfriend backstage at their recent Brisbane show and he didn’t want to kill us for writing a song about his girlfriend!!” they said. No death is always a good thing!

The rocking tune was produced by Todd Morse (The Offspring, Juliette and the Licks) and mixed by Grant Wallis of Aneiki (anyone out there remember “Pleased to Meet You?”).

The band will play shows around Queensland in June to support the release of “Hayley.” The Brisbane quartet says we can expect an energetic set.

“We just love jumping around and getting in the crowd’s face. We spend along time practising making sure everything is perfect. We also enjoy terrible jokes.”

Major Label Releases More Singles

Major Label, General Pants Co’s “singles only” record label, is going from strength to strength. Following the signing of three acts in March, Major Label has announced it will release three new singles next month.

Again, there’s a lovely eclectic mix of talent. The singles are “Love Me” from Sydney indie folk act Underlights, “Pairs” from Sydney progressive punksters Made in Japan, and “Hot Trash” from Brisbane indie-dance act Tin Can Radio.

These singles will be available to stream on the General Pants Co website and to purchase through selected online retailers, including iTunes, Amazon, Emusic, and Nokia.

Major Label’s first three acts – Guineafowl, Circle Pit, and High Highs – have all achieved significant support from radio and media following their signings. It’s great to see Major Label creating a buzz for these hot up and comers.

Remember, if you want to be considered for a Major Label release contact Henry Roberts of Peer Group Media or take your demo to any General Pants store.

Gyroscope Slams Warner Over Greatest Hits Release

The lads from Gyroscope have lashed out at former record label Warner Music for releasing a greatest hits record without their consent or knowledge.

2008 ARIA Awards - Arrivals

The band only became aware of the release when fans alerted them through Facebook. They say the album does not represent value for money.

“The song selection, artwork and everything about this release has been done without consultation with the band,” they said. “Gyroscope are a band who have always put our fans first. In our opinion, the release of this album without consultation with the band, and without including any material from our new album Cohesion, does not represent good value for our fans.”

I’ve got to say I side with Gyroscope on this one. Material from a mere three albums does not a greatest hits make, particularly when the first two didn’t exactly set the world alight. Compare that to the latest disc which debuted at number 3 on the ARIA charts and you quickly realise this is no “best of” at all.

I think anyone who doesn’t already own all four discs would be better off filling the gaps in their collection than buying this greatest hits CD, but if you do want The Best Of Gyroscope you’ll find it in stores next week.

New Song Obsession: “We Could Get Lost” by Mark Sholtez

When I first encountered Mark Sholtez some years ago he was supporting Human Nature. He was the sort of jazz artist I might expect to see in Las Vegas; I could tell he was good but he was also incredibly cheesy. Still, he must have been doing something right because I remember his name all those years later. And now he seems to have reinvented himself as a mellow singer-songwriter type. I must say, the makeover’s working for him. “We Could Get Lost” is the first taste of Mark’s upcoming album The Distance Between Two Truths. Mark penned the track with Iain Archer of Snow Patrol. I think this is gorgeous, and I can’t wait to hear more!

Q & A with Skarlet Blue’s Ryan Di Cecco

After years rocking out on Aussie pub stages, Skarlet Blue have turned a corner. The Melbourne four-piece are showing off a new, more melodic sound with the release of their debut EP Shades of Grey. I recently caught up with the band’s bassist Ryan Di Cecco to chat about the CD, their upcoming Aussie tour, and that brand new sound.

Many people may not have heard of your music yet. How would you describe your sound?
Our new sound combines elements of rock, electro, dance, ambiance and is quite textured. We have explored how we can really exploit having a keyboard in the band and the different effects and sounds it can produce. The goal is to create something a little bit different that is accessible for all listeners that doesn’t overuse the effects or become monotonous. The lyric content is sincere and definitely based on life experiences shared by each member. We have focused on telling a story and dealing with themes that everyone can take something away from.

You’ve just released your debut EP Simple Shades of Grey, yet you’ve been touring for the last three years. Why did this release take so long?
I think it took this long because we hadn’t quite found our sound yet that gelled with us as musicians and songwriters writing comfortably. We needed those three years of touring and life experiences to help shape our sound and assist us in evolving as a not just a band but as human beings. We had some great opportunities along the way and played for some amazing influential industry people, but were always ‘9’ out 10 but never a 10. In hindsight they were exactly right.

You’re going to tour up and down the East Coast to support the EP. What can fans expect from your live set?
The fans can expect good quality music. The songs are not all one pace or one particular style; they range from melodic ballads to electro dance to quirky pop songs. In saying this, each track still maintains the Skarlet Blue essence and sound, while still being uniquely different from each other.

What do you love about playing live?

Playing live is the time we get to actually get to see the audiences’ reaction first hand during particular moments that we have spent time creating. Because everyone is facing you, their expressions tell one million words. If they buy our CD that’s great, but to see first hand people dancing, singing, laughing or intensely listening, is something we really get a buzz out of.

Yusuf Islam, The Artist Formerly Known as Cat Stevens, Announces Aussie Tour

The man formerly known as Cat Stevens is paying Australia a visit. Yusuf Islam will tour Oz for the first time in 36 years this June.

Just don’t expect the same show you might have seen all those years ago. Yusef has written some of the world’s most incredible songs including “Moonshadow,” “Father and Son,” Where Do The Children Play,” and “Peace Train.” But a London comeback show last year was panned by fans and critics alike. Apparently he invited other singers to perform his most popular songs, and he spent 40 minutes previewing his musical Moonshadow, complete with an all-singing and dancing cast. I hear when he did the songs people came for he was great, but there was a whole lot of time when he just didn’t deliver what the fans wanted.

Who knows what Aussie fans will see. Artists like Yusuf are renowned for turning out as many dud performances as spine-tingling ones. Buy tickets at your own risk when they go on sale on May 6.

Yusuf Islam Photocall To Launch His 'Guess I'll Take My Time Tour'

10 June 2010 – Challenge Stadium, Perth
13 June 2010 – Entertainment Centre, Adelaide
16 & 18 June 2010 – Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
21 & 23 June 2010 – Entertainment Centre, Sydney

k.d. lang Replaces Susan Boyle on Logies Line-Up

The 18th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Award Party!

When Susan Boyle pulled out of the Logies last week, I wondered whether the organisers would be able to match her star power. It seems they have, with the announcement that k.d. lang will be stepping in. The Canadian crooner’s appearance follows the release of her recent number one selling greatest hits CD, Recollection.

“I’m honoured to be included in the TV Week Logie Awards because Australia feels like my second home,” k.d. said in a statement. “I’m also looking very forward to being in Melbourne again.”

k.d. joins John Mayer, Gabriella Cilmi, and Rogue Traders on the rather healthy looking Logies line-up. Susan who? Personally I’d much rather watch k.d. and Mr Mayer!

You can catch the Logie Awards on the Nine Network on May 2.

Kylie Minogue Announces “Aphrodite” Album with Teaser Video

Kylie Minogue’s website has gone into meltdown with the announcement that her next album will be named Aphrodite. I guess that’s what happens when you make an announcement that you’ll make an announcement a day before to generate some hype!

At any rate, Kylie’s 11th studio album will hit record stores on July 5. It will be launched with the single “All The Lovers,” which gets a June 28 release.

If you can’t wait that long, check out this 30-second teaser video. I must say what’s here kind of hurts my ears, but spin it in a club and I might be interested. I’ll reserve my judgement until I hear the vocals; Kylie’s always had a knack of hooking me in with a catchy chorus.

Brian McFadden Tops Singles Charts

Just as I was bemoaning the lack of Aussie talent on the singles chart comes the number one debut of Brian McFadden’s newie “Just Say So.” I know he was born in Ireland and all that, but now that he’s living here and marrying our Delta we’ve adopted him right? At any rate, Brian’s new tune is the only local release in the top 30, so I think it’s something to be celebrated.

Maria Sharapova Open's TAG Heuer Melbourne

While the Aussies have finally bowed to the pressure of Lady Gaga’s Fame Monster, they still have a strong presence in the album charts. John Butler Trio is breathing down Gaga’s neck with April Uprising, which holds steady at number two this week. Gyroscope enjoyed a great first week with Cohesion, which comes in at number three. And after five weeks on the charts, Angus & Julia Stone are still going strong with Down the Way, which sits at number 8.
