Guy Sebastian Claims ARIA Number One

After nipping at Bruno Mars heels for a few weeks, Guy Sebastian has finally toppled him to take the number one spot on the ARIA singles chart with “Who’s That Girl.” It’s actually the first time we’ve seen an Aussie sitting at the top of the singles chart in 2010, and I couldn’t ask for a better way to end the year!

“Who’s That Girl” is Guy’s fifth Aussie number one, which means he now has more top selling singles than any other local male artist in history. For your interest, John Farnham and Johnny O’Keefe both had four a piece. Considering what big names they are, and where Guy is in his career, that’s some achievement.

Guy’s keeping company in the singles chart with fellow Australian Idol alum Jessica Mauboy. Her new party tune “Saturday Night” sits at number seven, up three positions from last week.

Meanwhile on the albums chart, Altiyan Childs has remained rock solid with his self titled album holding on to fourth position. I remember a time when that might be disappointing for a disc spawned from a reality show, but just look at the company he’s keeping. He’s mixing it with perennial favourites Pink, Susan Boyle, and Bon Jovi, and even outselling the likes of Rihanna, Michael Jackson, and Taylor Swift. I reckon that’s a fair effort.

Meanwhile Guy Sebastian’s greatest hits CD Twenty Ten has moved up one position to number six. It’s encouraging to see that while fans are getting behind the single, they’re also spending money on the long player.

Hopefully Guy can hold on to that top spot next week. What a great start to 2011 that would be!

  1. Fantastic way to end the year isnt it Sounds Of Oz. But you need to correct one thing. Guy is the first Male Australian artist to achieve 5 number one singles in Oz music history. He is equal third overall with Olivia Newton-John for all Aussie acts. Kylie and Delta have more. But still a massive achievement in a 7 year career. And as his last two came 6 and 7 years after Idol. the knockers can’t say it is because he won a tv talent contest. Without a truckload of talent he would have disappeared years ago.

  2. It’s auto-tuned with dance beat and trendy guest rapper, but it’s at least Australian and that’s really good-might as well play them at their own game. Can’t wait until real singing comes back in the US – after all Guy’s quite capable of doing that. But if what matters to you is No 1 hits, I guess you have to go with the flow. Congratulations Guy!

  3. Sweet as to see an Aussie at the top of the Australian charts for a change. Overall, it is such a shame that Aussies prefer international music to our own special homegrown talent ! Australian music has so much to offer.

It is so good to see Guy achieving so much in his short 7 year career and he certainly is awesomely talented being able to write and perform music in a variety of genres.

He also has a very broad appeal across age groups who seem to get him and connect emotionally to him as person I have noticed. This connection with people I reckon has also helped consolidate his popularity as an top recording artist and this equates to having a huge fanbase who actually support and buy his music which is so great to see in this age of music piracy.

  4. Oh I forgot to say what a fab blog – loved reading all the stats on the charts – great reading!

  5. Thanks for the pick-up Natbelle! I guess he’ll have to make a play for the overall record with the next album!
