Molly Ringwald @ Hurstville Entertainment Centre, Hurstville – 8 June 2016

Three years ago I first saw Molly Ringwald performing jazz at the Sydney Writer’s Festival. I was thrilled to be simply in her presence, to be so close to the woman who’d made such an impression on me as I was growing up. However, that night we were in a makeshift venue on a pier in Walsh Bay and the crowd seemed dominated by hipsters rather than other people who loved and adored her. Those folks probably didn’t make the effort to head out to Hurstville last Thursday night to see Molly on her return visit to our shores.

There was never a question about whether I would though. It didn’t matter to me that Molly hasn’t released another album in that time. I didn’t mind if it would be a repeat of the same show I saw way back in 2013. I just wanted to be around her again.

The Hurstville Entertainment Centre gave me the intimacy that I was craving last time. The term entertainment centre makes it sound larger than it is. It’s more like an old dinner theatre, with tables at the front to hold the cheese and dessert plates they sell at the bar in the foyer. I was perched in the front row, close enough to see Molly has barely aged since she was a teenage pinup. I certainly don’t have the legs to pull off the glitzy sequined dress she strutted out in!

She smoldered through “Sooner or Later,” convincing us all that she could have easily taken the Madonna role in Dick Tracy she auditioned for. More songs from her album Except Sometimes came, as well as tracks from an upcoming release and others she felt deserve a place in the Great American Songbook. I appreciated the set list, which if my memory serves correctly was a bit more eclectic than the one on her first tour. Jazz standards were well represented, of course, alongside modern cuts from Rufus Wainwright and Elvis Costello and show tunes from My Fair Lady, West Side Story, and Guys and Dolls. Few artists could so convincingly deliver such varied material, but Molly’s acting chops served her well here. Credit should also go to her band; only the pianist tours regularly with Molly but they gelled so well.

The songs were punctuated by Molly’s musings. I hung on her every word. I loved hearing why she selected certain songs, what they meant to her, about roles she’s auditioned for and her life as a wife and mum. While great music matters to me, that personal touch you get when an artist shares themselves with you really makes a concert special. Molly Ringwald might be better known as an actress, but she certainly holds her own as a singer.

Jimmy Barnes Equals ARIA Record With New Soul Number One

In a weekend plagued by bad news, it’s great to see something good occurred: Jimmy Barnes earned his eleventh solo number one on the ARIA charts, with Soul Searchin’ hitting the top spot on debut. That draws Barnesy level with U2 and Madonna for the most solo number ones in ARIA charts history. This video gives you a little idea why this album is sitting at the top of the charts.

“I feel blessed to be making music after such a long time in the business and equally I feel privileged that people are still buying our records and coming to the shows – it’s very humbling,” Jimmy said on hearing the news. “As for another #1, it’s an absolute honour to be counted amongst such iconic bands and great artists.”

Soul Searchin’ has pushed last week’s number one, Skin by Flume, into the number two spot. He’s also fallen a little on the singles charts. “Say It” has dropped one to sit at number six. Keith Urban’s Ripcord has also slipped one spot, to number six.

Some Aussie acts are on the rise though. Classic Carpenters by Dami Im is back in the top 10, rising from 11th position to sit at number nine. The Wolfe Brothers round out the top 10 with This Crazy Life.

Dustin Tebbutt Provides Calm in the Storm with “First Light”

I’ve had one of those weeks where I’ve found myself with far too much to do and too little time to do it in. The blogging’s taken a back seat as I find myself scrambling to meet work deadlines which allow me to carve out a little social time seeing some of the great artists touring the country at the moment (more on that later). As much as I want to live in those social moments, there’s a nagging voice reminding me of all of those deadlines looming. As with all busy times, this too will pass, but until then good music is a wonderful companion.

I’m compelled to take time out of the deadline stress to write about one song that’s allowed me to take a little breath this morning, “First Light” by Dustin Tebbutt, a singer-songwriter from Armidale in regional New South Wales. Its folky acoustic sound is perfect for chilling out and its lyrics about falling in love and seeing the world in a brand new way are just gorgeous.

If you need to take a moment for yourself today, hit play and listen to “First Light.” It comes from Dustin’s debut album of the same name, which is released on August 5 but First Light is available for preorder right now.

Flume Scores Third Number One Album

Flume continues to dominate the albums charts, debuting at number one on the ARIA charts with his new album Skin. It features three top 30 singles and counting, “Never Be Like You,” “Smoke & Retribution,” and “Say It,” which currently sits at number five. This album follows Atlas and Bloom, which also topped the charts.

Keith Urban’s Ripcord has fallen two positions but still sits at a credible fifth spot on the albums chart this week. No doubt we’ll see it rise again when Keith hits our shores later this year.

Here are the other singles and albums in the Aussie top ten.

They’ll be joined by exciting and diverse artists including Allday, George Maple, Client Liaison, Ngaiire, Boo Seeka, and Bad//Dreems. For something really civilised, head to the event’s Champagne & Oyster Garden, where up-and-comers like Inigo, Forevr, and BATZ are scheduled to perform.

The Maroochy Music and Visual Arts Festival will hit the old Horton Park Golf Course on the Sunshine Coast on September 10. Early bird tickets are currently available from the festival’s website.

Josh Rawiri Releases Amazing Single “My Call”

All too often when tracks are laid down in the studio, they lose a little of their potency. However there’s no evidence of that in “My Call,” the bluesy new single from Josh Rawiri. This is one of those songs that’s so compelling in its rawness. I can really hear the angst of living with a long-distance relationship and the jealousy and temptation that can breed in Josh’s soulful vocals.

“I wrote this song driving late at night, after many weeks on the road away from family,” he explained. “No mobile phone, my only point of contact the odd phone booth – so much relies on trust when you live two separate lives, it’s easy to let our vulnerable imaginations run wild.”

If you live in Milton, make sure you check out Josh’s show at the Commercial Hotel tonight. Hopefully it won’t be too long before he brings his live show to the rest of Australia.

Tim Wheatley Home to Release “78 Benz”

Cast of Yesterday was one of my favourite albums of 2015. I’d forgotten just how much I love it until I revisited one of the tracks today, the current single “78 Benz.” If you still haven’t listened to this album from Aussie expat Tim Wheatley, this song should give you every indication of why you should.

Tim wrote the track about his own vintage Mercedes and about the way you’ve got to follow your passions in life, no matter how difficult that might be.

“I had been in LA nearly a year, playing shows, writing, and turning my hand to other things like modelling and acting,” he explained in the press release. “I was juggling three passions, in which rejection is an integral part, and really struggling with it … ironically, as much as it was taking its toll on me, ‘78 Benz,’ my favourite song on the record, would never have come about with the absence of struggle.”

Tim will play one more local show, at Collingwood’s Grace Darling Hotel on June 10, before heading back to the U.S. If you get the chance, you don’t want to miss it.

The Hard Aches Rock Out with “Glad That You’re Gone”

Adelaide rockers The Hard Aches have served up a superb slice of angst with their latest single “Glad That You’re Gone.” I can’t help thinking of You Am I when I listen to this track. There’s a similar crunchy, organic truth to what they’re doing which is really exciting.

“Glad That You’re Gone” is getting some airplay on Triple J and The Hard Aches are making the most of it. They’ve just wrapped up a tour supporting Tired Lion, and in a couple of months’ time they’ll be out again supporting Luca Brasi and playing Poison City Weekender. No doubt it’s only a matter of time before we see these guys headlining.
