Moving Pictures Celebrate 40th Anniversary of “What About Me”

Some singles date quickly, sounded like yesterday’s news shortly after you hear them. And then there are the songs that endure, that continue to touch the heart and encourage us all to sing along decades after their release. “What About Me” is one of those songs.

This year marks the 40-year anniversary of Moving Pictures’ breakthrough single. It spent six weeks at number one in Australia and even cracked the top 30 in the United States. And of course it gained a new legion of fans when Shannon Noll covered in on Australian Idol. That single went four times platinum and sold more than any other Nollsy track ever has. Such is the power of this song.

Moving Pictures will mark the anniversary with shows in New South Wales and Victoria. These are the only gigs the band will play this year, so if you love them don’t miss out on tickets.

Harrison Craig Swings Around Australia With New Vegas Shows

Critics have long derided The Voice, claiming it gets the ratings but fails to produce stars. Little do they realise many of the talents to come from the show continue to hone their craft and play shows all around the country. One of those hard achievers is Harrison Craig.

He’s set to get the hearts of his largely female fan base fluttering when he takes his latest album Kings of Vegas on the road. It’s a tribute to the greatest acts from the City of Sin including Nat King Cole, the Rat Pack, Elvis Presley, and Tom Jones. Harrison recorded it in Las Vegas with a 90-piece band for that authentic swing sound.

Harrison says he can’t wait to bring those songs to his fans around the country.

“I’m counting the moments down until I can be back out there with my Harrinators!” he said in a press release. “Here we go. Vegas Baby!”

Emily Wurramara Hits All The Right Notes With “Hey Love”

After a big 2016 which saw her clock up 193,000 Spotify streams and earn rotation on JJJ and ABC Local, Emily Wurramara is back with her most personal song to date, the very beautiful “Hey Love.”

“Hey Love is a song based on a true story about my mother and an incident that happened to her when she was in her first year of boarding school,” she explained on Soundcloud. “’Hey Love’ focuses on so many different perspectives, racism, bullying, empowerment.”

The song touches on so many important issues but does it with such a delicate tone which makes it really accessible. This song is just so easy to listen to with its gentle vibes and Emily’s sweet, sweet voice.

“Dragonfly” – Kasey Chambers

Kasey Chambers is something of a quiet achiever in the Australian music industry. She pops onto the radar every now and then with big singles like “The Captain,” “Not Pretty Enough,” and “Barricades and Brickwalls,” but there’s not a lot of fanfare when she releases albums. However, when they’re full of quality songs like her 11th studio album Dragonfly, there really ought to be.

You might assume that at number 11 Kasey might be running out of steam. Yet Dragonfly shows she’s still a singer-songwriter with plenty to say. There are 19 different tracks on the album in all (“Ain’t No Little Girl” is given two separate treatments). I’ve felt shorter albums than this drag, but the songs are all of such quality I can’t imagine what she could have left out. The album was recorded in two separate sessions – the Sing Sing Sessions were conducted under the guidance of Paul Kelly while the Foggy Mountain Sessions sees Kasey’s brother Nash at the helm. Despite the two different locations and producers, the album comes together beautifully as a cohesive whole.

“Pompeii” is the perfect introduction to this album, a banjo-driven number with a traditional country sound and sublime harmonies from Kasey and her backing band. It sets the scene for an album that has a classic sound deeply rooted in the country music upon which Kasey was raised. I love the gospel-tinged fun of “Golden Rails” and the old Southern blues feel of “Shackle & Chain.”

However, I feel Kasey is at her best when she’s baring her soul. “Ain’t No Little Girl” is powerful stuff which hit this female writer hard. The title track is another master stroke, with intimate lyrics which are so moving.

She’s just as compelling whether she’s telling the story of someone else, like in the exquisite “Behind the Eyes of Henri Young” or the haunting “Annabelle,” or her own story with great humour and a country twang in “Talkin’ Baby Blues.”

Dragonfly features collaborations with a first-class collection of musicians. While she shines in solo mode, duets like “Romeo & Juliet” with Fance Voy and “If We Had a Child” with Keith Urban are some of the album’s highlights. Other tracks like “Jonestown” and “Satellite” aren’t listed as duets, but the strong presence of other voices that complement Kasey’s so beautifully make them feel as if they are.

Dragonfly is released today. Kasey will celebrate its release with a string of shows around the country.

Jackie Dee Prepares to Unleash Album Number Three

Jackie Dee is something of a quiet achiever. I must admit, her music had escaped my attention but she’s about to release her third album, Six String Heart.

Perhaps that’s because Jackie is one of those artists that creates music that’s unassuming. She doesn’t have the biggest voice or the loudest music, but what she does she does very well. Her new single “Contemplating Life” gives us a taste of the new album and what she’s all about.

“We are all touched, moved, angered by the things we hear about in the news each day and it’s easy to despair. I wanted this song to have universal meaning, reaching all of us who sit and ponder the current state of our planet and society but at the same time the song encourages optimism and at its core it’s about the importance of our relationships,” Jackie explained.

Six String Heart isn’t afraid to tackle the big issues, with songs that touch on domestic violence and mental illness. It drops on February 17, after she launches the single and plays an album preview show at the 2017 Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Jackie might have escaped my attention before, but I’m going to keep my ears out for this country songbird.

Damian Cowell’s Disco Machine Pays Homage to Waleed Aly

Former TISM frontman Damian Cowell is back with a brand new act, a great new song, and one of the most star-studded film clips you’re likely to see. “Come On Waleed,” an ode to the formidable Mr Aly, is the debut single from Damian Cowell’s Disco Machine.

“‘Come On Waleed’ is about all my heroes going down the S bend. While all else falls, Waleed’s left standing like the last person in musical chairs,” Damian explained. “He’s ubiquitous in the media, yet he’s got a brain and he’s not a fuckwit. Who’d have thought it possible?”

If you thought you’d seen stars in the video, you ain’t seen nothing yet. “Come On Waleed” is lifted from Get Yer Dag On!, Damian Cowell’s Disco Machine’s first album, which features guest stars like Henry Rollins, Josh Pyke, Henry Wagons, Pinky Beecroft, Ella Hooper, and heaps more. The band will play the following shows to support the album’s launch.

18 February – The Barwon Club, Geelong
4 March – The Corner Hotel, Melbourne
10 March – The Factory, Sydney
11 March – The Woolly Mammoth, Brisbane

Hollow Coves Make Me Swoon With “Coastline”

Hollow Coves has released a stunning new acoustic video ahead of their supporting duties for Woodlock. The stripped back clip, shot at a friend’s lake on Brisbane’s bayside, supports the release of their dreamy single “Coastline.” This is just the kind of song that makes you want to hang on to summer a little longer, all organic and delicate and relaxed.

Hollow Coves have a lot of momentum at the moment, with “Coastline” and the previous single “The Woods” both scoring the top spot on Hype Machine and more than 5 million streams of their songs on Spotify alone last year. No doubt the release of their EP Wanderlust on February 3 and the following shows with Woodlock will keep the hype around this exciting folk act growing.

27 January 2017 – Beach Hotel, Byron Bay
28 January 2017 – Woolly Mammoth, Brisbane
2 February 2017 – Brass Monkey, Cronulla
3 February 2017 – Newtown Social Club, Sydney
4 February 2017 – Small Ballroom, Newcastle
5 February 2017 – Rad Bar, Wollongong (matinee & 18+ evening show)

M-Phazes and Alison Wonderland Release Hot Clip for “Messiah”

“Messiah” might be one of the most played songs on Triple J at the moment and a favourite among Spotify users, but it’s taken me a little time to warm to M-Phazes’ collaboration with Alison Wonderland. I could tell it was an accomplished piece of work with a killer vocal performance from Alison Wonderland, but it still didn’t speak to me. But then I saw the film clip. And it all came together.

This clip is one of the most original music videos I’ve seen in months. Staring Dennis Cockrum, you’re likely to recall it whenever you sneeze and feel a sense of relief that you’re not afflicted with his particular condition! However of course, it does have its uses! The clip was shot on location in Los Angeles and features cameo appearances from both musicians.

Cameron Avery Releases Incredible New Single “Wasted on Fidelity”

Cameron Avery has outdone himself with his brand new single “Wasted on Fidelity.” It’s a masterclass in the art of songwriting, with poetic lyrics that really deserve to be listened to set against sparse instrumentation that lets those words shine.

“Wasted on Fidelity” comes from Cameron’s debut solo album Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams, which will drop on March 10. He’ll showcase songs from the album at the following Aussie shows. Since the Perth-bred singer-songwriter is now based in New York City, these gigs offer a rare opportunity to experience his music live.

14 January 2017 – Freo Arts Centre Courtyard, Fremantle
18 January 2017 – Newtown Social Club, Sydney
19 January 2017 – Northcote Social Club, Melbourne
