Gareth Jay Releases Touching Single “Thoughts of You” For His Wife

Sydney singer-songwriter Gareth Jay does everything right with his emotional new single “Thoughts of You.”

If the track has you swooning, just think how his wife must feel. Gareth penned the song as a dedication to her better half and all she does for their family. It’s so special, with Gareth’s soulful voice crooning over a simple acoustic guitar arrangement.

“I’m a musician at night, and a stay at home dad during the day,” Gareth explained. “I’m not complaining, I love spending time at home with my children, but sometimes it’s overwhelming and pretty full on. My wife has done this all before, and she made it look so easy!”

Gareth Jay Gets Soulful With “Run To Me”

I’m having one of those times where there seems to be far too much work and too little time to accomplish it. Those times where I’m up working until midnight to meet deadlines, then up at seven the next morning to do it all again. It’s not exactly fun, but as a freelancer you have to take the opportunities when they come, because there’s always that niggling thought it might all dry up tomorrow.

I’m doing my best to take time during this period to listen to the tracks coming through to me and make a blog post a day. I hate when this little piece of the web lies dormant, because I think we all rely on music to get through whatever it is that’s going on. And listening to music is my happy place, especially when I discover songs as fantastic as “Run To Me” by Bathurst-raised, Hunter Valley-based musician Gareth Jay. This is so soulful and soothing, just the kind of thing I needed for a little respite on a busy day set to get even busier.

I’m also very impressed to read everything you hear comes from Gareth, from the lyrics and vocals to the guitar, ukulele, bass, and drums. Who needs a backing band? More like this please!

Gareth Jay Tackles Alcoholism With “The Fox & The Rabbit”

Gareth Jay has floored me with his incredibly beautiful new single “The Fox & The Rabbit.”

This gorgeous song, featuring British drummer Ben Hooper, explores the theme of alcohol dependency in a poetic and profoundly moving way. I love the way the delicate fingerpicking guitar mimics the interplay between the metaphorical fox and rabbit. This is truly special stuff.

“For people that suffer from alcoholism, there is an ever present want for alcohol even though you know what the outcome will be. Similar to a rabbit attracted to the chase of a fox. There’s a risk at play there. That fundamentally the rabbit will succumb to the fox’s vicious objective, but the rabbit still wants to take the risk. To chase to see if he can escape this time,” Gareth, who co-wrote the song with his wife, explained.

Are you as impressed with this song as I am readers?

“Gareth Jay” – Gareth Jay

It’s been a little while since I’ve heard any really great new blues music. You know the stuff, the music that feeds you soul and bubbles over with passion and heart. So I was really excited to stumble across the self-titled EP from Sydney’s Gareth Jay.

The opening track “Fiend” had me from its intro with its acoustic guitar and rich harmonica. Once his husky voice entered the mix I was sold. This song just oozes sex.

The follow-up number, “Crave,” kept me enamoured. If the lost love this song was written about didn’t go back to Gareth after hearing it she’s crazy. I think I’d forgive almost anything if anyone was inspired to write a song like this for me.

The heartbreak continues with “It’s Not Me, It’s You.” It covers familiar ground but Gareth is so talented that it feels fresh.

“Why Don’t You Just” feels like it’s come out of America’s Deep South rather than the streets of Sydney. It’s swampy and raw and oh so good.
The closing track “Tempt Me” has a real organic, spontaneous energy. It feels like the sort of thing you might expect Gareth to improvise on stage with his bandmates, unpolished and honest.

After listening to all five tracks I had to play them again. And then again. What a wonderful introduction to this talented musician. I expect massive things when Gareth Jay releases his first full-length album this May.
