Review: The Gossling Lippie

As a music blogger, I tend to get a steady stream of singles and albums in my letterbox. Receiving a lipstick is a new one for me, but as a girly girl I couldn’t wait to try out The Gossling Lippie designed by Victorian singer-songwriter Gossling and cosmetic queen Shanghai Suzy.

I was in for a real shock though. It’s so bright. The internet assures me that fluoro coral is right on trend, but I’m just not sure that it’s me. Perhaps I need as much time in the sun as my Queensland-based pal Lisa who also gave it a whirl while she was visiting recently. I think the neon shade looks much better on her, although she wasn’t sure about it either.

The funny thing is though, while I’m not sure it’s the most flattering colour for me I really love this lipstick. It’s got a gorgeous subtle grape fragrance that reminds me of being a 90s girl applying Lip Smackers. Those Bonne Bell glosses never felt this luxurious though. It’s so decadently nourishing. It feels like heaven going on, and best of all, it stays there. I get really nervous wearing bright lippie but this one didn’t budge. It even survived the steak dinner my husband made us and a couple of bottles of wine. That sort of staying power makes it perfect for a night out with the girls.

If you’ve got the confidence to wear a colour like this, you’re going to love the Gossling Lippie. It’s available from the Shanghai Suzy website for $12.95.

Gossling Collaborates with Emily Green on Jewellery Line

I love learning about the many talents of our music industry’s best and brightest. So I was impressed when I heard that Gossling has collaborated with Melbourne jewellery designer Emily Green on a fabulous range of handmade accessories.

The collection was inspired by Gossling’s own signature nine bead and big bead necklaces. They’re sure to be a hit with Gossling fans and fashionistas across the country. You can find them on Emily Green’s website from April 1. No joke!

Gossling and Vance Joy Unite for Double-Header Tour

Two of the hottest names in Aussie music, Gossling and Vance Joy, are teaming up for one big tour this autumn.

Gossling has been busy wowing crowds in the United Kingdom and United States this month, but she’s ready to return to Oz to promote her latest single “Harvest Gold.” As a special bonus for fans, they can buy a limited edition 7” gold vinyl version of the single, which includes the B-Side “Never Expire (Oliver Tank Remix), exclusively at the gigs. There’s another reason to get to the merch desk too. Gossling will sell her very special Glossling, a shimmery lip gloss created by Gossling and Melbourne cosmetics label Shanghai Suzy.

As far as I know Vance Joy doesn’t have any fabulous merchandise, but he does have that “Riptide” song which should be enough to get people through the door. See him and Gossling at the following shows through April and May.

8 May 2014 – The Bakery, Perth (18+)

Gossling Reveals EP Tracks on YouTube

Gossling’s new EP Intentional Living doesn’t drop until April 20, but she’s giving fans a sneak peek through her YouTube page. Every week she’ll record one of the disc’s tracks at Melbourne’s Bake House Studios before unleashing it on the public.

“We wanted to create something special for the release of Intentional Living,” Gossling explained. “So we decided to create our own space at Bake House Studios where we could film each track from the new EP live, giving fans a taste of what they can expect from not only the new release but also from the Intentional Living tour which will start days after the EP is released.”

The quirky space, seen in this live version of “Wild Love” was decorated with the help of Melbourne yarn bombers Yarn Corner. The project sounds like a great way to get more bums on seats as Gossling travels around this wide brown land, although with “Boys Like You” still enjoying chart success I can’t imagine that will be a concern.

If this live video’s got you in the Gossling mood make sure you check her out supporting 360, Josh Pyke, or fronting her own shows in the coming months.

360 Plans Flying Aussie Tour

After recently completing a sold out string of dates, 360’s figured it’s time for another go round. He’ll play underage and adults only shows around the country in June as part of his The Flying Tour.

The tour is well-timed, as 360’s Falling & Flying album is still enjoying great success thanks largely to the big single “Boys Like You.” Single collaborator Gossling will join 360 at all the shows, along with Hermitude and Bam Bam.

He’s known for his big sound, but 360’s keeping things nice and intimate this time around with shows at small venues that allow him to really connect with his followers. To ensure he does just that, he’s giving his fans first dibs on the tickets. Join his website’s mailing list by midday on Friday to get the pre-sale information. The pre-sale will then kick off on Saturday March 10, ahead of the general public sale on March 15.

That disc won’t drop until April 20 but Gossling is looking to tide us over with a string of shows including support slots for Adam Cohen and a few headlining gigs.

The song is another accomplished cut from this local singer-songwriter. Although we shouldn’t be surprised as everything Gossling touches turns to gold, and Evermore’s Dan Hume also shares songwriting credits.

Gossling is no stranger to the stage, having recently completed tours with Oh Mercy, Lamb, Whitley, Lior, and The Whitlams. She’s also made a big impact at local festivals including the Woodford Folk Festival and Peats Ridge.

“Until Then” – Gossling

Like so many other Australians, I recently sat home applauding Angus and Julia Stone as they took home award after award at the recent ARIAS for their sophomore effort Down the Way. Listening to Gossling’s new EP Until Then I wondered whether she’ll need as many long players under her belt before the awards start to flow.

The comparisons to Julia Stone are unavoidable; the artists sound uncannily similar with their breathy, ethereal voices. But Gossling brings more dynamics to her intimate tunes. She isn’t afraid to let that voice of hers soar, matching the lush instrumentals she favors. Her sound is big and full, with strings and pianos joining her voice as the songs reach emotional and musical crescendos.

While her sound is bigger, Gossling is careful to never lose the organic nature of her music with overproduction. Listening to the songs you get the sense that they could have been recorded during a jam session in someone’s living room. There’s that sense of immediacy and truth, as if the tunes were captured in one take.

The EP has just five tracks, mostly tales of love convincingly painted by the lyrics that never stoop to cliches. The epic “Oh Darling” may be one of the most beautiful and stirring songs I’ve heard all year. But I was thrilled to see her experiment a little in “I Was Young,” a tune which steers dangerously close to bluegrass in the rollicking choruses. I hope to see her play a little more with genres and sounds when the inevitable long player is released.

And it is inevitable, because Gossling is that good. We have a glut of talented female singer-songwriters in this country, but I expect to see her standing out from the pack in the coming years.

Q & A with Gossling

From the fertile creative grounds of Victoria’s Albury-Wondonga region comes Gossling, otherwise known as singer-songwriter Helen Croome. After earning strong airplay on Triple J, Gossling is ready to take her sweet indie-pop stylings to the masses with the release of her debut EP If You Can’t Whistle and a mini tour. I caught up with Gossling today to chat about her first release, her upcoming shows, and sustainable living.

You’re about to hit the road to support the release of your debut EP If You Can’t Whistle. What can you tell me about it?
My debut EP was recorded at Sing Sing in Melbourne. I loved the recording experience and had an engineer/producer who was very patient and helpful while I experimented with arrangements and sample instruments along the way.

You’re playing shows in Melbourne and Canberra to support your EP launch. When will the rest of Australia get the chance to see you play?
Very soon. I’m really keen to play some regional shows in Victoria and tour some of the other major cities. If everything runs to plan I’ll be on the road with my band in May.

The show in Canberra should be a big one with The Whitlams and Whitley also on the bill. Are these artists you look up to as a new singer-songwriter?
I loved The Whitlams when I was growing up. Their first album was on high rotation on my bedroom CD player. I love Tim Freedman’s melodies and the thoughtful lyrical content of his songs. He has a depth to his melodies that I strive for in my own writing.

You played some big shows earlier this year supporting Lamb. What did you learn about performing live playing with such a big act?
I learnt that Lamb fans are the best fans in the world. They were such a supportive audience. I thought I would be talked over and ignored being the support act to such a well known band, but I was blown away by how attentive the crowd was during the set. Both in Melbourne and Brisbane, the crowds were amazing.
