Downsyde, Harts, and Flewnt Team Up For Chess Records Tribute Album

The more I hear from this upcoming Chess Records tribute album, Everybody Knows I’m Here, the more excited about I am. If you flipped over imbi’s take on “Mannish Boy,” take a listen to the latest take, Downsyde, Harts, and Flewnt’s collaboration on a cover of Howling Wolf’s “Poor Boy.” Their version, called “Po’Boy”, brings an urban edge to the track. If you prefer a more traditional cover, the double A-side single also features Harts’ solo version.

I really like what the version with Downsyde and Flewnt brings to the song though. I’m pretty sure if Howling Wolf were still alive, he’d embrace the rap and beats that freshen up his iconic tune and bring the message into the 21st century.

Downsyde member Optamus says their version delves into the “connection with young people through hip-hop and youth culture,” and the “importance of representing a young voice and, particularly, a young voice and struggle,”

“It’s really important and unique that we are able to do the song that tells a similar story to that of my people, but from the other side of the world how many years ago,” added Flewnt. “That is a big, major part of us doing the song and what will draw attention to it.”

“Particularly First Nations’ youth in this country are more likely to go to prison than to graduate high school, and we have systemic problems that are not being fixed and are not being faced,” Downsyde said. “I believe our job as hip hop artists from years ago … and having a voice … is that we have to bring that discussion to the table.”

“I hope that it challenges a few perspectives of what people might think of Australia or what they even think goes on or what the society looks like,” confirmed Flewnt. “There are a lot of hard challenging moments, for a lot of different people, from a lot of backgrounds … I think having that sort of story being out on an international level is more than important and vital to the survival of our culture.”

Everybody Knows I’m Here drops on May 6. Given what we’ve heard so far, it’ll be epic. Visit the album’s website to preorder your copy.

Harts Plays Hendrix in Melbourne

Harts is one of the best guitarists in the country. So it’s only fitting that in May he’ll take on the music of one of the world’s most legendary axemen, the one and only Jimi Hendrix, this May.

Harts Plays Hendrix will see Harts in a three-piece band (naturally) playing songs from Jimi’s entire back catalogue. Expect a few guest appearances by some of the country’s premiere musicians at this very special show.

“I’m very excited to be putting on this special show,” Harts enthused. “Jimi’s music and playing has always been a big inspiration and influence on my own style as an artist and guitarist. It’s going to be a thrill paying tribute to the iconic music legend by performing and really showcasing his work in a show like this. I think Hendrix fans, Harts fans, lovers of classic rock and the guitar are really going to enjoy this show.”

Harts Plays Hendrix hits the Melbourne Recital Centre on May 30. Hopefully it goes so well the show comes to other cities around the country!

Harts Gets You Grooving With “Shake Ya Pants”

Expect to start shaking what your mama gave you when you wrap your ears around Harts’ funky new single “Shake Ya Pants.” It’s a fantastic slice of funk which is giving me serious Price vibes. Always a good thing.

“Shake Ya Pants is a light hearted and fun tune about being comfortable in your own skin. It’s kinda like a fun pep talk, encouraging somebody to be themselves when they may lack self confidence,” Harts explained. “I debuted an extended version of the track live for the audience at my Howler show back in July and they loved it. I’ve been looking forward to putting this out ever since!”

“Shake Ya Pants” is the latest track from Harts’ forthcoming album, which will be released later this year. Harts will be back in the country to celebrate its release with shows all around the country. With a bigger live band joining the Aussie talent on stage, you’ll want to wear your best dancing shoes to the following gigs.

Harts Goes Back to His Roots For “Consciousness of What You Think”

I’m getting serious Lenny Kravitz vibes from “Consciousness of What You Think,” the latest single from Harts. The track sees the Australian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist getting back to his bluesy, rock and roll roots, and I love it.

“Consciousness of What You Think” is the first track from the latter of two new Harts albums scheduled for release this year. Most albums won’t even drop one album in the next six months, so knowing he’s got two in the pipeline is so impressive.

“I’ve always loved writing different styles of music and working on different songs simultaneously,” Harts explained of his unconventional approach. “I love all kinds of music and I love to create. This is a song about freedom. Feeling free to be who I want to be and create what I want to create.”

Expect to hear some of that new material Harts is so excited about when he plays Howler in Melbourne this Saturday, July 7.

Harts Delivers Musical Pep Talk With “Ain’t Nothin’ On Me”

Indian-born Aussie-raised singer-songwriter Harts continues to impress with the release of his funky new single “Ain’t Nothin’ On Me.” I just love its deep groove and those empowering lyrics.

“In a world constantly putting you down, Ain’t Nothin’ On Me is song to build you up. It’s a song about self-confidence and self-belief in your own worth, skills and ambitions,” Harts explained. “The line ‘They could never do it like you’ is something Prince told me as words of encouragement to me when I thought I wasn’t good enough to be in the game with some of today’s current top artists. The song is raw, much inspired by a ‘go for it, don’t let others bring you down’ mentality.”

Harts has been spending a lot of time in the United States of late, but he’s back on Aussie soil to play a few festivals. Catch him at Bluesfest in Byron Bay on March 30 and 31 and Sea ‘n’ Sound on the Sunshine Coast on June 9.

Harts Does It Again With “Power”

Harts shows he just can’t put a foot wrong with the release of his latest single “Power.” This is another killer cut from the Aussie youngster, with dirty guitar chords, velvety vocals, and a serious funk sensibility.

I’ve gushed about what this guy is doing so much that I’m starting to sound like a broken record. But he’s just that good. The rest of the world is starting to pay attention too, after critically acclaimed performances at the Pink Pop Festival in Netherlands, shows in the United Kingdom and Europe, homegrown events like Groovin’ the Moo, Falls Festival, and Splendour in the Grass.

Seriously, just listen. He’s amazing.

Harts Strikes Gold Again with “Peculiar”

Super groovy Melbourne funk-rock artist Harts is back again with another killer cut. His latest single “Peculiar” features the soulful vocals and awesome guitar licks I fell in love with on “All Rise (Play it Cool)” but it’s got a rougher edge that’s really working for me.

“I tested it out first live at the All Rise Tour shows last month and the response we got encouraged me to release it as a single,” Harts explained. “The idea for ‘Peculiar’ started with me coming up with the main guitar chords and riff jamming with my loop pedal at home one day. I was in a mood of questioning everything and I think that reflects in the lyrics. The song progressed quickly from there when I started to produce and arrange the instruments in the recording phase. It was all very natural.”

Harts is currently in the US for South by Southwest, but he’ll be back home in time to play Bluesfest and Groovin’ the Moo. If you’re going to either festival, make sure you don’t miss his set.

Get On Your Feet for Harts

You know you’re doing something right when the likes of Prince sing your praises. But that’s just the position that Melbourne funk-rock act Harts finds himself in thanks to killer cuts like his latest single “All Rise (Play it Cool).” If this song doesn’t get your toes tapping then nothing will.

“I really wanted to write an up-tempo classic rock and roll tune,” explained Harts. “With whatever we may be going on in life, just a little reminder for us to turn off our minds for a moment and have a good time while we’re here.”

And doesn’t it deliver. “All Rise (Play it Cool)” is our first taste of Harts’ sophomore album, which is scheduled for a March 2016 release.

Harts will launch the single with intimate shows in the East Coast capitals. Mark them in your calendars music lovers because you won’t want to miss them.

14 January 2016 – Howler, Melbourne
15 January 2016 – The Foundry, Brisbane
16 January 2016 – Oxford Art Factory, Sydney

Harts Ready to Tour Bluesy “Breakthrough” EP

Killer guitarist, skilled songwriter, talented producer, and all-round good guy Harts is set to release a brand new EP, appropriately titled Breakthrough.

The EP doesn’t drop until June 5, but it seems Melbourne’s Harts might have already made his breakthrough. He released his debut album Daydreamer last year, which saw him invited to play with Prince at Paisley Park. It doesn’t get much bigger than that folks. And with tracks like the bluesy original “Red & Blue” under his belt, it’s not hard to see why he’s impressing all the right people.

To coincide with Breakthrough’s release, Harts will undertake his largest local tour to date. Once that wraps up he’s got plans to head to New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom, so who knows when we’ll get him back. See him while you can at the following shows.
