Owl Eyes Announces Album Tour

Why yes, we are seeing a lot of Owl Eyes. And it seems like we’re about to see a lot more of her! I recently shared her new single “Closure” with you, and now I’ve got some tour dates to celebrate the launch of her debut album Nightswim. That album drops on April 19, which gives us just enough time to become comfortable with the songs before she graces stage around the country.

This is the first time Owl Eyes has toured around Australia since she sold out venues last May. Expect similar hysteria this time around, especially with exciting up and comers Mammals and Collarbones on support duties. In short, I wouldn’t wait too long before getting your tickets.

4 May 2013 – Governor Hindmarsh, Adelaide (All Ages)

10 May 2013 – The Zoo, Brisbane (18+)
11 May 2013 – The Standard, Sydney (18+)

Owl Eyes Gives Us “Closure”

Owl Eyes has released an instant pop classic in her her latest single “Closure”.

It’s rare to come across an Australian release that is so unashamedly pop. It’s ridiculously catchy and those vocals are oh so sweet. However don’t mistake it for a piece of throwaway music. The insightful lyrics give this gem real depth.

This is our first taste of Owl Eyes’ debut album Nightswim, which will hit stores on April 19. She made a massive impression with her EPs Faces, Raiders, and Crystallised, and if this song’s any indication Australia’s love affair will continue.

Stonefield & Owl Eyes Team Up for The Line

It’ll be a serious case of girl power when sisters Stonefield join forces with fellow Victorian Owl Eyes for one big national tour next month. Casually dubbed Winter Road Trip 2012, the tour hopes to raise awareness of the national government’s The Line initiative.

The Line is all about promoting respective relationships amongst young Australians. It touches on a range of issues including physical violence, cyber bullying, abusive texting, and sexting. Both Owl Eyes and Stonefield’s Findlay sisters are program ambassadors, and they’re keen to take its message to regional locations.

“I feel like out in the regional places they don’t  always get a lot of live  music or get an opportunity to get out to a lot of venues or anything like that so it will be nice to take our music and The Line’s  message there and spread it around a bit.  It will be quite special.” Owl Eyes said in a statement.

“Playing in a country town makes a big impact,” Amy Findlay added. “It seems like everyone knows what  it is going on and they are so appreciative  of it. So I feel like the message will make a big impact.”

Owl Eyes Tours “Crystalised”

She’s been so busy touring the country it’s amazing to think Owl Eyes had any time to hit the studio. But she did, and the brand new single “Crystalised” is the result.

The track is the follow-up to Owl Eyes’ breakthrough single “Raiders.” It’s taken a whole year for a new song to hit the airwaves, but if the early reaction from fans and critics is any indication it was worth the wait.

Owl Eyes’ will take a well-deserved break from songwriting to take “Crystalised” to the masses. The shows will give fans a sneaky first listen to the songs from her forthcoming debut album, as well as some old favourites.

Tickets are on sale now through Moshtix.

20 May 2012 – The Toff in Town, Melbourne

Andy Bull and Owl Eyes Team Up for Tour

Sydney and Melbourne have a healthy rivalry, but Andy Bull and Owl Eyes are having none of it. The singer-songwriters who hail from the major capitals are putting those old state grudges aside for a double header tour next month.

Andy Bill burst onto the scene in 2009 with his impressive debut We’re Too Young. Last year he gave us the searingly intimate Phantom Pains EP, and we can no doubt expect more songs of personal reflection at these shows.

Meanwhile Owl Eyes is coming off much talked about appearances at Hot BBQ and Pyramid Rock Festival. She’ll treat us to tracks from her debut EP Faces, and a few unexpected tunes.

Here are all the shows where you can see these two incredible singer-songwriters in the flesh!

23 February 2011 – Otis Bar, Wollongong
24 February 2011 – Brass Monkey, Cronulla
25 February 2011 – UNSW Beergarden, Sydney
4 March 2011 – Pure Pop Records, St Kilda
5 March 2011 – Toff in Town, Melbourne

Owl Eyes Does Summer Festivals, Shout Out Louds Support

Our very own Owl Eyes will be rubbing shoulders with some major international talent over the coming months.

She’ll support Swedish indie rockers Shout Out Louds at the East Brunswick Club, before gracing the stage at the Hot BBQ Festival in Portsea. Hot BBQ Festival might not grab the headlines of the Big Day Outs of this world, but with Mos Def, Hoodoo Gurus, and Boy and Bear all on the bill it should be every bit as hot as its name promises.

If you’re heading to Pyramid Rock, don’t miss Owl Eyes joining Illy for their new single “It Can Wait.” Her cameo appearance is bound to be one of the talking points of this year’s festival.

If you love Owl Eyes, and her new EP Faces, these are the places you can see her over the silly season!

31 December 2010 – Pyramid Rock Festival, Phillip Island (with Illy)
3 January 2011 – East Brunswick Club (supporting shout Out Louds)
22 January 2011 – Hot BBQ Festival, Portsea

Q & A with Owl Eyes

Australian audiences were first introduced to Brooke Addamo as a fresh-faced teen on Australian Idol. She’s done some growing up since then, and adopted the stage name Owl Eyes. With the release of her debut EP Faces, it’s time to reacquaint yourself with this talented young singer-songwriter. I caught up with her recently to chat about her stage persona, Faces, and her upcoming launch shows.

It’s not so common for a solo performer to take a stage name. What was behind that decision for you?
I decided to go with a stage name to separate myself from my normal self. Having a different name helps you create a stage persona and let’s you be more creative.

And why Owl Eyes?
I feel owls are such a good representation of my music; it’s that combination of light and darkness, pop music with some substance behind it. Among many other reasons I choose it after going through some of my favourite songs and came across Devendra Banhart’s “Owl Eyes,” and it just sounded right to me.

If local audiences think you look familiar it may be because they spotted you on Australian Idol. How was that experience for you?
Australian Idol was fine. I mean I was 17 at the time, so it was a good experience for me to go through. It really did make me realise what I didn’t want to be and made me a stronger person in the decisions I make. I feel it actually makes me work harder because people have these preconceived ideas of what I am so I have to constantly prove myself as a serious artist but when good things happen I’m more grateful because I know how hard I worked, so it all balances out in the end.

There can be a bit of a stigma around appearing on a talent show like that, particularly when you’re a songwriter with independent leanings. Did you feel that, and if so how did you overcome it?
I have felt that at times but I have been pretty fortunate that once people hear my music they kind of discard the stigma and judge me purely on what they hear. The fact that I didn’t go very far on the show has actually benefited me in the long run and similar artists have set good precedents and I think people are more forgiving towards artists like myself and see it more as an awkward teenage stage or a learning curve, rather then something that defines the artist.

From Australian Idol to Indie Artist: Meet Owl Eyes

I always had a lot of respect for Australian Idol as a way to give emerging artists a foot in the door, but appearing on the program was always a bit of a double-edged sword. For every Lisa Mitchell and Ricki Lee Coulter, there are the hundreds of finalists who struggle once their tenure on the talent show is up. You might not remember the name Brooke Addamo – she finished 11th when we all had our eyes on Wes Carr – but she’s hoping her new incarnation sticks. She’s reinvented herself as a singer-songwriter by the name of Owl Eyes, and she’s preparing to release her debut EP Faces.

The disc, which drops on September 10, features the single “1+1” which is already enjoying steady airplay on JJJ and community radio around the country. It’s a world away from the pop mould Idol tried to force her into, and that’s a very good thing.

Some EP launch shows are in the works, but before that Owl Eyes will be warming up the stage for a host of other bands around the country. Make sure you arrive early to catch her at the following shows.

10 September 2010 – Corner Hotel, Melbourne (with Custom Kings)
11 September 2010 – Revolver, Melbourne (with Metals)
18 September 2010 – Spectrum, Sydney (with Metals)
30 September 2010 – Bella Union, Carlton (with Nicolas Roy)
