Phia Spreads Good Vibes With “Full Circle”

The working week gets the best of us down. If you’re looking for music to put a smile on your dial, look no further than Phia’s new track. Her latest single “Full Circle” is pure joy and light.

“This song goes DEEP for me. How do we as adults honour who we were as children and what our hopes and dreams were, and how they might have changed?” Phia asks. “It’s the first single from my self-titled second album which is all about honesty, and love, and integration. By integration I mean – accepting all the parts of who you are, not trying to edit or hide them. And being OK with that!”

The beautiful backing vocals come from Melbourne Indie Voices, a cool choir Phia leads. Because if you’re going to lead a choir in your spare time, you might as well make use of their talents! Her long-time friend Josh the Cat also lends his guitar skills.

Phia will play two shows at Melbourne’s Recital Hall on August 10. The 8 pm show has already sold out, but you can contact the venue for tickets to the 6 pm gig. She’ll also play the following shows in Germany next year.

21 April 2020 – Ostpol, Dresden
23 April 2020 – Badehaus Berlin, Friedrichshain

Phia Breaks the Mould With “Oxide” Ahead of EP Release

Like Melbourne’s Phia, I was interested to see Björk writing last year about the criticism female artists face when they write music that departs from exploring relationships and touches on atoms, galaxies, or activism. I’m also thrilled that Phia used Björk’s comments as a songwriting challenge. While she face backlash? Who knows, but she’s delivered “Oxide” anyway!

With her words in mind, Phia read of scientists who discovered 60,000-year-old bacteria inside subterranean caves in Mexico. “Oxide” is told from the perspective of that ancient micro-organism. It definitely thinks outside the box of acceptable female songwriting, but that’s a big part of its appeal.

“Oxide” comes from Phia’s EP The Woman Who Counted The Stars, which will drop on September 29. The EP’s title refers to astronomer Vera Rubin, the first scientist to quantify dark matter. To celebrate its release, Phia is playing throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, and here in Australia in the coming months. Catch her at the following venues.

Georgia Fields and Phia are two of Melbourne’s brightest female musicians. So you just know that when they combine their musical talents for their Sky & Sea tour, magic is going to happen.

The ladies will share the stage and each other’s songs, accompanying one another one everything from the kalimba to electric guitar. Expect beautiful harmonies, exquisite songs, and a show that will keep you guessing.

“When Georgia and I were talking about how challenging it is to tour solo, I thought: why don’t we give it a go together? As a fan, I love it when my favourite musicians collaborate – you get to see their work in a totally different light,” Phia said in the press release. “I lived in Berlin for five years and was incredibly inspired by the DIY arts scene over there; it’s very much about building a community and making genuine connections with people.”

With her debut album The Ocean of Everything set for release later this month, Melbourne songstress Phia has given us another teaser of what’s to come with the release of the poppy new single “Open/Closed.”

Pop is a bit of a dirty word on the modern musical landscape, but this song is a world away from the manufactured music that gave the genre that bad reputation. “Open/Closed” is everything good music should be, catchy as hell with real charm. I also love the music video which Phia shot in the Australian outback.

Georgia Fields and Phia Collaborate on “Open Orange”

Melbourne songbird Georgia Fields has enlisted the help of Phia and her kalimba for her new dreamy new single “Open Orange.” Phia also lends her vocals and songwriting skills to the track, which is the second to come from Georgia’s forthcoming album Astral Debris.

If you love this song and you’re lucky enough to live in Melbourne, make sure you get to the single launch. Phia will also appear at the July 3rd show at The Gasometer, part of the Leaps and Bounds festival.

Phia Releases First Music Video for “Do You Ever?”

Phia has been releasing music for around five years now, so it’s surprising that this video for her new single “Do You Ever?” is actually her first. It’s a thoroughly charming affair, with enough paint, tinsel, and glitter to appeal to any serious craft addicts.

Phia Does Bowie

Prepare to be enchanted by Phia’s cover of “As the World Falls Down.” The Berlin-based Melbourner teamed up with her producer Josh Teicher for this dreamy cover of David Bowie’s song from one of my favourite films, Labyrinth.

This exquisite cover version was recorded for Rolling Stone Germany for a special CD compilation celebrating the music of the Thin White Duke. Isn’t it gorgeous?

Q & A with Phia

Melbourne born and German based singer-songwriter Phia is showing she’s truly a citizen of the world as she tours through Poland this month with fellow German based Aussie Mez Medallion. I caught up with her recently to chat about the European dates, her love of pop music, and life away from Oz. Tune in tomorrow for an interview with her touring partner Mez!

You’re currently based in Berlin, which is a world away from Melbourne. What inspired you to make the big move?
It was partly based on timing – I wanted to have lived some of my life in Europe, and suddenly it just seemed the right time. I didn’t have anything tying me down in Melbourne – no full time job, or mortgage, or university! It was also a career thing; I wanted to explore opportunities over here for my music. Berlin seemed an obvious choice: it’s cheap, there are heaps of artists here. I also have a German passport as my grandfather was born here, so that makes the visa side uncomplicated!

How does life in Berlin compare to living in Australia?
I find it hard answering this question. A lot of answers that I come up with, I wonder whether they are concrete differences, or rather, changes that have come about because my mindset/attitude has changed somewhat from moving overseas. There are some obvious differences of course. I love the travel I’ve done over the last eight months as everything is so close and affordable! I’ve been to Iceland, Poland, around Germany, the UK. In fact, last month someone from the south of France was in Berlin and saw one of my shows and invited me to play at their birthday party. That was fun! I also love not owning a car. It’s an easy city to get around. I ride my bike a lot, and also ride my bike to gigs which is so great. Now that I always play solo, I can fit my gear in a backpack. I’ve had some beautiful serene bike rides home at 3 am on a weeknight, riding down cobble-stoned roads, past canals and bridges, and some seriously old buildings.

You call your music pop, which is a term that’s almost fallen out of favour in recent years. Why do you embrace it?
Because I love pop songs! I grew up mainly listening to the Beatles and then got into contemporary music in the late ’90s, a really great period of mainstream pop music, in my opinion! Those early Britney Spears songs, the Spice Girls, early Destiny’s Child. They had some great songwriting teams. Now I listen to tune-yards, Lykke Li, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear. Pop is such a broad church, and, at least, the first two have a hint of some of those ’90s influences. I’m not aspiring to be Lady Gaga, but a pop song is defined by being catchy, having a clear message and a hook.

Also as I was writing this I realized another reason I love pop is the diversity of great female artists who are out there making pop music, so inspiring.

What makes your pop music different from the stuff that made the term such a dirty word?
When I’m describing my music to people, I do always feel the need to add a precursor to the word “pop” with another, like “experimental-pop”, or “art-pop”. People often hear “pop”, and think you mean disposable music, or at least heavily produced. The songwriting of my music is pop, but the sounds I use are more diverse and intimate, a bit playful. I loop my kalimba on stage and layer my voice, which includes beat-boxing, hand claps and finger clicks, so it’s a bit DIY and a bit experimental at the same time.

Enjoy the “Garden of Youth” with Phia

It’s Wednesday, hump day, and if you’re anything like me you’re probably dragging your feet anticipating the weekend which right now feels too far away. Well allow me to brighten your mood a bit by introducing you to Phia.

This cheery Melbourne musician reminds me of a cross between Lisa Mitchell and Regina Spektor. She writes songs that are sweet and quirky and guaranteed to put a smile on your face, no matter how badly the week is treating you.

Phia’s preparing to unleash her EP Garden of Youth later this month, but she’s giving online fans a sneak peek. I particularly love the first single “Indecision,” but all the songs are so charming that it’s hard to choose.

If you’ve fallen for Phia like I have, and you’re lucky enough to live in her hometown, you can catch her spreading her positivity at the EP launch at Grace Darling on May 13.
