“Everything is Bigger Than Me” – Pierce Brothers

The Pierce Brothers have been one of Australia’s finest indie-folk acts for more than a decade. With the release of their third album Everything is Bigger Than Me, brothers Jack and Patrick Pierce are showing they can do more than simply write and perform incredible songs. They’ve co-produced this album alongside longtime collaborator Phil Threlfall and recorded it at Jack’s home studio. The resulting collection of songs may just be their best yet.

Of course, this album was always going to be wonderful. I’d already been wowed by the singles “Studio”, “Bottle”, “Wilder”, and “In the Water.” But they’re far from the only exemplary tracks on this album. I have relished getting to fall in love with each and every song showcased here. They’re built on a solid foundation of beautiful lyrics, irresistible melodies, and sublime harmonies, just as the Pierce Brothers’ music always has been. But the lads have added new, exciting layers this time around. The arrangements are so lush and textured, and the lyrics seem more revealing. The emotion in the vocals of “Blood” is palpable. And you won’t hear a more heartfelt love song than “White Dress.” This music is so intimate, encouraging you to step inside the Pierce Brothers’ world and stay a while. These gentle moments provide a counterpoint to those raucous singalong songs like “Bottle” and “Everything is Bigger Than Me” that this twosome does so well.

Everything is Bigger Than Me is a special album from one of Australia’s best acts. It encourages repeat listens, and there’s no better time to start than now. The Pierce Brothers are currently making their way around the country. Make sure you see them anywhere you can.

Pierce Brothers & LULLANAS Team Up For “Wilder”

Our own Pierce Brothers have teamed up with another sibling duo, Philadelphia-based LULLANAS, for their latest single “Wilder.”

“’Wilder’ is a track that I have been so excited about for such a long time. I knew we could make something special with it! It’s a song about the passing of time while looking in the eyes of your child, and I wanted the vibe and energy to build up to the very best of what Pierce Brothers can do,” said Jack Pierce. “Taking the song from a quiet, thoughtful place to a rambunctious and raucous indie folk explosion was always the plan, but bringing in LULLANAS was an absolute game changer! Their spectacular vocals really added something that I didn’t know I was missing! They’ve been the best to work with!”

“Being able to collaborate with The Pierce Brothers all the way from Pennsylvania felt like crossing oceans without actually crossing them, making this collaboration extra special,” LULLANAS added. “We were so excited when Pierce Brothers invited us to collaborate on this track! Working with another twin duo was a unique experience. Hearing their voices blend seamlessly, and adding our layers to it, was truly cool. We adore the infectious energy and uplifting vibes of this song. The combo of upbeat melodies and positive tones really makes us want to hop in the car and drive for miles!”

“Wilder” is the fourth release from Pierce Brothers’ upcoming studio album Everything is Bigger Than Me, and it’s certainly ramping up the anticipation. The brothers recorded and co-produced the release (with Phil Threlfall) at Jack’s home studio, a process which provided some real perks.

“Being able to bring the team out to us and set up shop for a month without having to do setups each day or even really travelling to the studio was so freeing!” said Pat. “We were really able to dig into so many cool ideas and then sit with them over dinner, then get back into the studio to break them down and tear them apart! It was the best way for us to explore what we wanted to share!”

Everything is Bigger Than Me drops on March 28. Pierce Brothers will embark on a massive eight-month national tour with headlining shows and festival appearances to celebrate its release.

Raise a Glass to Pierce Brothers’ “Bottle”

The Pierce Brothers might be one of the most consistent bands on the Aussie music scene. I fall instantly in love with everything they release, and their latest single “Bottle” is no exception. Often their tracks are slow burners, but this one brings the party vibes from the jump. And it’s got horns! Yes please.

“We really wanted to give the song a blues, almost Motown feel. Kicking things off with the horns gave it such a vibe, and we absolutely love it!” Jack Pierce enthused. “When I wrote the track, I knew the exact part the horns were going to play, but when we got into the studio, it was Phil [Threlfall, the band’s longtime collaborator] who pitched that opening, and I‘m so happy he did!”

The video, filmed at the King of Tonga Bar in Euro-Yroke/Elwood, shows you how much fun seeing the Pierce Brothers can be.

“It’s a pretty heavy subject matter, but I wanted to use a dark moody setting and have a bit of levity in there. We liked the idea of Jack going hell for leather, while I was slowly coaxed into the song,” explained Jack’s brother and band mate, Pat Pierce. “Much like a night at a pub can be. It was such a quick shoot and edit, and came together really well! Just vibes for days!”

Pierce Brothers Impress With First Self-Produced Single, “Studio”

Naarm/Melbourne indie-folk duo Pierce Brothers are one of those outfits who never seem to put a foot wrong. Their latest single “Studio” sees the lads producing their music for the first time, in partnership with longtime collaborator Phil Threlfall, and the results are simply brilliant. Their trademark harmonies and acoustic guitars are showcased so beautifully on this track, the first lifted from their next album.

“We first jammed this track onstage during soundcheck in Marlo, East Gippsland, and wrote the lyrics while sitting in a hotel room in Johannesburg,” Jack said. “I was feeling particularly disconnected from home when we came up with the idea for the lyrics, I missed my family, my kids. The idea of being so caught up in music that I would lose them haunted me, and this song was an exploration of those emotions.”

Pierce Brothers also recorded the song in Jack’s home studio.

“I have to say the best part was the commute!” he enthused. “We’re just so stoked that this is the start of something new here. We have this incredible space at our disposal all the time now! We can’t wait to just write album after album!”

Pierce Brothers Drop Fantastic “In The Water” Single Ahead of East Coast Tour

I’m convinced the Pierce Brothers can do no wrong. Their latest single “In the Water” is another stellar indie-folk track that perfectly showcases their gift for building melodies.

“As a major third wheel in the twin brother dynamic, we found pretty quickly that my main role was actually that of a casting vote between Pat and Jack,” said Dara Munnis, who played keys on and cowrote the song with the Pierce Brothers. “Whenever there were different options on the table for the direction the song was taken, I have 100% let this newfound power go to my head.”

Dara also co-directed the music video with Patrick Pierce, who said “I have wanted to shoot at these locations for a while, and I saw the work of Alicia Brown which got me thinking about using those designs and ideas in a music video about a child’s imaginary friend. Once that was in my head, I just began thinking of all the beautiful locations in Victoria and just wanted to get on the road to start filming them. I reached out to Maryanne Lea to help with the costuming and she took the idea and really ran with it!”

The concept was originally meant for another release, but due to lockdowns in 2020 the performance aspect become impossible. However, now the time is right.

“We had to shelve the project until a new project that fit the song came along. Since then Dara has become a keys player in the band and this was our first song we wrote together. It just made sense that we release this music video we’d worked on for so long together”

Pierce Brothers will celebrate the release of “In the Water” with long-awaited shows allong the East Coast.

“It’s been such a long time since we’ve played headline metro shows, so I’m just really excited to get back out there and play to some of our most excellent hometown fans,” Jack Pierce enthused. “Melbourne is where we honed our craft and where our oldest fans are from, so we’re just really excited to see them all again.”

Pierce Brothers and Tash Sultana Join Forces for “High & Unsteady”

Sometimes you hear about a song and you know it’s going to be good before you even hit play. “High & Unsteady” is one of those songs. A collaboration between Pierce Brothers and Tash Sultana, how could it be anything but brilliant? My expectations were sky-high, but this track is everything I hoped it’d be. Pure feel-good indie-folk goodness with all the energy you need to get moving on a Monday.

“I really enjoyed working with the guys,” Tash enthused. “We’ve been working together for years on the road, so I had a great idea on how to capture their sound.”

The admiration is mutual, with Jack commenting “We’ve loved everything that Tash has done over the years, and when they had the idea to collaborate, we jumped at the opportunity! Pat and I put together the bones of the track so when we got into Tash’s studio we had a base from which to create and explore new sounds. Tash is one of the most talented producers we’ve had the pleasure of working with, they brought so many new sounds to mix that we would never have even thought of. I didn’t know what a mellotron was before that day!”

“High & Unsteady” comes with a cool animated music video directed and edited by Patrick Pierce, who combined 35mm analogue and digital footage.

“About 12 months ago I found a video featuring this rare Japanese film camera from the 90s. It has 16 separate frames across two rows on it, and was used for things like shooting a golf swing. I was searching for about 8 months before I could find one and start testing it out,” he explained. He edited the clip in-house over a painstaking summer, noting that “Easily the biggest hurdle in this music video was the edit. I had to develop, scan, separate and animate over 3,000 individual images. It took months, and I’m certain that the response from the general public will be ‘Huh … nice filter.’ That said, I’ve had this idea for ages now, so I’m really happy I’m finally getting it out of my head and onto a screen.”

Pierce Brothers plan on starting work on their next album this year, but you’ll still have plenty of opportunities to see them play. They’ve announced a bunch of festivals and single launch shows, and have plans to tour Australia, South Africa, and Europe to boot. Get your tickets for the following events:

“into the great unknown” – Pierce Brothers

I’ve followed the career of Pierce Brothers since Jack and Patrick Pierce hit the scene in 2014. The brothers take a slow and steady approach to creating music; it took four years for them to release their debut album Atlas Shoulders, and they’ve only just released the follow-up, into the great unknown. That thoughtful, considered approach is an anomaly in an industry where it seems everyone is looking out for the next big thing. But as a music fan, I appreciate the time the duo takes. It ensures when those albums do drop, they’re special from start to finish.

You won’t find any filler tracks here. So many albums seem to exist simply as a way to bundle singles together, but that’s not the case here. The singles “dentist,” “brother,” and “kanko” sound fabulous of course, but there’s much more to dive into. Releasing several tracks prior to the album’s release ensures this music feels familiar from the first listen, but I didn’t find myself waiting for those songs. I was having too much fun discovering the rest of these tunes.

Pierce Brothers recorded this album in regional Victoria, between the state’s two lockdown periods. Travel was clearly on their mind; songs such as “white caps,” “la montagne,” and “lights of London take us on a journey. We might not visit Europe or the UK or marvel at snow-capped mountains in a foreign land any time soon, but through this music we can experience some of the romance and sense of adventure international travel provides. Most of the material is joyous, the kind of fun folky stuff that inspires you to clap along and stomp your feet. But the brothers show us a darker underbelly through tracks including the instrumental “reflecteur,” “trouble,” and the cutting “trouble.”

into the great unknown is a natural evolution for Pierce Brothers. It showcases a bigger sound, with female backing vocalists and string arrangements complementing their sublime sibling harmonies and acoustic guitar melodies. However, the duo hasn’t strayed too far from what drew me to their music back in 2014. This album is entirely self-funded and released 100% independently, ensuring the duo’s collective voice remains strong. into the great unknown took some time, but it proves the old adage that good things come to those who wait.

Pierce Brothers Drop Gorgeous New Single “Brother” Ahead of Album Release and Victorian Tour

I was already excited about the release of Pierce Brothers’ sophomore album Into the Great Unknown next month, but the release of a new single “Brother” has my anticipation at a fever pitch. It’s a gorgeous slow burner that explores the themes of being away from family. You can bet it’s hitting extra hard with the current Victorian lockdown in force.

The video adds some lightness to this powerful track, as Pat Pierce explains.

“We wanted to juxtapose the earnestness of the song with a bit of a piss-take,“ he said, “We went in there with the intention of playing the whole thing straight, but then when Justin (our older brother) said he could drop in, we thought it would just be way funnier if we tried to do an honest-to-God straight performance, and he just walks through and messes it up for us. We couldn’t stop laughing at the thought of it so we figured, why not?”

Pierce Brothers’ new album Into the Great Unknown drops on March 5. To celebrate its release, they’ve announced a string of shows around Victoria. With limited COVID-safe capacities, gigs are already selling out so get onto those tickets ASAP. If you’re in another state, don’t despair. The lads are planning on getting to you soon.

“In 2021 we’re planning on an entire regional Australia run!” Pat explained, “but the problem is that if we announce tickets too far in advance, there’s risk of border closures between the announce and the date of the gig. We want to avoid all postponing/cancellations of shows so this year it’s announce and GO!”

Full Steam Ahead for Pierce Brothers With New Single, Album & Tour

So many of us approached 2021 with a sense of optimism. The year might be looking like the same old shit, but I’m not ready to surrender just yet. So I’m seeking out music that puts a smile on my face, even as the world goes to hell in a handbasket. The latest track to get my toes tapping is “It’s Alright” from Pierce Brothers.

If any band will convince you it’s all going to be OK, it’s these guys. The song’s inception reminds us of the kind of world we’ll get back to. Jack Pierce penned the chorus in 2018, while he was trekking through the mountains of Switzerland. It sat in a drawer until brother Pat took it out recently, laid down the verses, and gave it a new bluesy feel. It’s got that upbeat, energetic folk feel that sweeps you along for the ride. If you’re into Nathaniel Rateliff or Mumford and Sons, you’ll love this.

Pierce Brothers are forging ahead and doing all the things the pandemic has made so difficult. “It’s Alright” comes from the band’s sophomore album Into the Great Unknown, which will drop on March 5. They recently cancelled NSW shows, but not to be deterred they’re forging ahead with the following dates, including a few new gigs in regional Victoria. All shows have limited COVID-safe capacity, so grab those tickets before they sell out!

Pierce Brothers’ “Dentist” is a Sweet Treat

When I heard Pierce Brothers had released a new track called “Dentist,” I was a little wary. Dentists do wonderful work, but like most Aussies, there are people I’d rather visit. Thankfully listening to the new Pierce Brothers track is much more relaxing than any root canal.

“After ‘Kanko’, we wanted to explore a deeper sound, and bring some harmonica back into the studio, which is something our recordings have been missing,” Jack said about the single. “This song was written during the first lockdown earlier in the year. I really wanted to step up my writing so, along with a friend of mine, I started doing a writing exercise every night. This song came out of one of those exercises. The word was Dentist. What flowed out was a reflection on the vulnerability we feel when things are out of our control and we don’t know what’s going to happen. That’s what the song is ultimately about, vulnerability. The dentist part is just a word.”

The folky ditty is complemented by a very 2020 video filmed entirely in Jack Pierce’s Melbourne living room.

“In the time of COVID there is not a whole lot we’ve been able to do shoot-wise. We couldn’t get locations, or extras, or even a real crew, so we had to improvise,” Pat recalled. “Carl and I have worked together on lots of projects before, and we have been talking for a while about teaming up again. It was great just getting back into filming beautiful scenes again and it seems fitting to have the clip be representative of this place in time. We included photos of our friends and family we’re missing to reflect the fact we were, in fact, stuck at home.”

Pierce Brothers have made the most of 2020, finishing the recording of their sophomore album and making music videos just like this. Pat Pierce has also been working with Balancing Act, a charity that connects artists with people with learning disabilities. Thank goodness for Zoom!
