Musicians Go Green

These days it seems everyone wants to be a little greener. Our favourite musicians are no exception, with plenty of the industry’s hottest stars supporting environmentally friendly events. Next Saturday it’s Earth Hour, where folks all around the country will turn their lights out for an hour from 8 pm. The initiative looks to raise awareness of the dangers of greenhouse gas emissions.

Silverchair, Jimmy Barnes, Rolf Harris, Missy Higgins, Kate Ceberano, Natalie Imbruglia, Pete Murray, The Veronicas, Katie Noonan, Ben Lee, Tex Perkins, and Vanessa Amorosi are just some of the stars who will participate in this great event. Earth Hour director Andy Ridley said their involvement is a great help to the cause.

“Celebrities can carry a message to a mass audience,” he explained to PerthNow. Earth Hour’s message is that everyone needs to take responsibility to address climate change. So whether you are Silverchair, an accountant, a father, a politician, or a CEO, Earth Hour is something you can take part in.”

Earth Hour started last year in Sydney, and has spread this year to become a global movement. All you’ve got to do to take part is turn off your lights for one hour from 8 pm on March 29. Too easy!

Then in April we’ve got the Climate Festival travelling down the East Coast. This cool event hopes to raise awareness of climate change and the impact it has on young people.

Tommy Lee (yes that Tommy Lee) and DJ Aero will headline with their surprising blend of percussion and electronica. Then we’ve got some of the best party bands from Australia and the rest of the world, like Junkie XL, DJ T, Klaas, Supafly, Seany B, Resin Dogs, and The Scientists of Modern Music.

100% of the profits will benefit The Wilderness Society, and $3 from every ticket sold will make sure the events are completely carbon neutral. But that’s not all. Vendors will sell organic food and merchandise, stalls will help educate folks about the environment, and there’ll also be plenty of recycling bins on hand.

The Climate Festival will visit Birrarung Marr in Melbourne on 5 April, the Big Top at Sydney’s Luna Park on 6 April, and Brisbane’s River Stage on April 12. Tickets are available now for $75 plus booking fees from Moshtix (Sydney and Melbourne) and Ticketmaster (Brisbane).

Sorry Shannon Regrets Drunken Show

Shannon Noll’s been left red-faced after he drunkenly slurred his way through the headlining spot on the CMC Rocks The Snowys festival last weekend.

According to The Daily Telegraph, many people booed the Australian Idol runner-up, while others left before his set was over.

“It was so appallingly bad it wasn’t funny,” one punter told the tabloid. “He was virtually incoherent but couldn’t stop rambling and raving on about how proud he was to be a country boy – he just wasn’t making any sense.

“In the end people started booing and yelling out ‘just sing’ because he was making such a fool of himself.”

Shannon issued a public statement yesterday apologising to his fans, his band, and the festival’s organisers.

“There is nothing more important to me than performing live, and I have always prided myself on giving 100% percent to my fans. Last Saturday night I let everybody down and I am sincerely sorry,” he said.

“When I begin my national tour in June I look forward to proving to the Australian public why they have been justified in supporting me over the last four years.”

I’ve got to admit, I’m in two minds about this one. We’ve all had nights where we’ve drunk too much and done stupid things, but most of us don’t drink to excess before we have to stand up in front of a bunch of people. That’s just dumb. But it does take a big man to apologise for his mistakes, so I’ve got to give him credit for that. It probably won’t be enough for the casual punters who had to witness his drunken display, but it at least might be enough to earn back the respect of the fans.

Gyroscope Debut at Number One

When I interviewed Gyroscope’s Zoran Trivic last month about their new album Breed Obsession he said “We have a feeling that this could possibly be the most important record of our music careers.” That prediction’s turned out to be true with the album grabbing the top spot in its first week on the ARIA album chart.

The band knocked Jack Johnson from the number one possie, an amazing feat considering the American singer songwriter is currently touring the country.

Gyroscope are so excited about their new material they’re taking it on the road in May with the Breed Obsession tour. Tickets to all the shows go on sale on April 3 from the usual outlets.

2 May 2008 – Bar 388, Brisbane (18+)

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ newie may have slipped a few places, but Dig, Lazurus, Dig!!! is still sitting at a very respectable number 5. The singing Christians from Hillsong United have leapt into the charts with their new album With Hearts as One debuting at number 8. The Veronicas round out the top 10 with their double platinum disc Hook Me Up.

Axle Whitehead’s debuted at number 8 with his brilliant first single “I Don’t Do Surprises.” But he was pipped to the number 7 spot by Chris Lilley’s alias Mr G and his novelty song “Naughty Girl.”

Australian Idol Seeks Expats

Apparently Australian Idol producers consider American Idol contestant Michael Johns the one that got away. But they’re determined not to let it happen again, by expanding the talent search to America and the UK this year.

According to The Sunday Telegraph, this year the Aussie reality TV show will audition expats in Los Angeles and London.

“I’ll take any numbers, no matter where they come from,” Channel 10 programming chief David Mott told the paper.

Judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson said he’s looking forward to seeing the new talent this global approach will unearth.

“It makes sense that, with a million Aussies living overseas and a large chunk of those being in LA and London, we should give this a nod,” he said. “We might find a few nuggets.”

Whitesnake Touring Australia … Really?

I can’t believe I didn’t hear this news until now, but apparently Whitesnake are touring around the country in a couple of weeks time. Back in the ’80s these guys were packing out stadiums, but now we’re lucky enough to see them in some Australia’s most intimate venues.

It’s hard to top tracks like “Is This Love” and “Here I Go Again,” and there are few frontman that can match the charisma of David Coverdale.

But I had to laugh when I noticed the Aussie shows include a few “all ages” gigs. Exactly how many Whitesnake fans under the age of 18 are there? For all those young hair band lovers and the rest of us, here are the dates.

26 March 2008 – The Tivoli, Brisbane (18+)
28 March 2008 – Enmore Theatre, Sydney (licensed all ages)
20 March 2008 – Palace Theatre, Melbourne (18+)
31 March 2008 – Thebarton Theatre, Adelaide (licensed all ages)

Baby on the Way for Bobby Flynn

One of my favourite Australian Idol graduates is going to be a daddy! Bobby Flynn let the exciting news slip in an interview with ABC entertainment blog The Shallow End.

“I’m going to be a father this year … it’s halfway now,” he said. “I haven’t really been telling the media or anything like that, but it’s fantastic news.”

It sure is! Congratulations Bobby!

The Mess Hall Win Australian Music Prize

Life’s set to get a lot bit easier for The Mess Hall after they took out this year’s Australian Music Prize. The duo beat out nine other artists including New Buffalo and Architecture in Helsinki to take out the $25, 000 prize.

Singer and guitarist Jed Kurzel told AAP the band are unsure how they will spend the money.

“We could spend it on making another record, or we could spend it going overseas, which we’ve been wanting to do,” he said.

Winning the Australian Music Prize is a great way for one of Australia’s hottest up and coming blues rock outfits to start a bumper year. In April The Mess Hall will support the Foo Fighters on their Aussie tour, before headlining their own local gigs.
