Lil Jon Does Melbourne's Megarampage

Rapper Lil Jon is heading to Melbourne as part of Megarampage, Melbourne’s extreme skating, BMX, and live music show. His visit coincides with the release of his new album Crunk Rock.

Other acts on the bill include The Offspring, Good Charlotte, Wu Tang Clan, Kelley James, and local bands Cog, Mammal, and Shaman.

The bands are a drawcard, but the real highlight of the day is going to be the Megarampage megaramp, a nine-storey high ramp that’s the length of a football field. It will take an entire week to build, but it’ll be worth it when 14 pro-skaters and six BMX riders tear it up! Australia’s Jake Brown will take it on, as will Americans Bob Burnquist and Danny Way to name a few.

Megarampage will hit Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium on October 31. Tickets are on sale via Ticketmaster from $99.

Evermore Score Pink European Support Slot

Evermore clearly impressed Pink during her recent Australian tour. The American popstar loved their support slot so much, she’s invited the lads to tour with her around Europe.

The New Zealand expats will head to Dublin on October 12 to start the tour, which will take in several European locations over 11 weeks.

“After a leisurely stroll around beautiful Australia, meeting 10,000 friendly locals every night on the Funhouse tour, P!nk has made us an offer we couldn’t refuse to join her on tour all across UK and Europe,” said Peter Hume. “We could not have had this chance without such a good response from everyone who came to the P!nk shows in Australia, so thank YOU for being crazy and loud.”

To coincide with the tour, Warner Brothers will release a greatest hits album in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the UK, Ireland, and Nordic regions. The disc will feature singles from Evermore’s three previous albums. UK radio will also receive “Hey Boys and Girls” next week.

“After being in this band together for ten years this is the first opportunity we have had to tour and release an album in UK/Europe and we are incredibly excited about getting over there!” Peter added. “This will be our debut album for the rest of the world, we feel all nervy and young again.”

Of course, if Europe gets a greatest hits Australia deserves one too. That will be released in November, with three new singles and a bonus disc of unreleased material adding value for diehard fans.

The opportunity to play Europe means Evermore will reschedule some upcoming dates. However, Victorian shows will go ahead as planned. Aussies and Europeans: you can see Evermore at the following venues!

Paul Greene Signs Japanese Deal

Local singer-songwriter Paul Greene has just inked a licensing deal with Japanese label Tsunami Music. His latest album, Distance Over Time, will hit Japanese record stores on 22 November. It will feature two previously unreleased tracks: “Bumpy Ride” and “Talk To Me.”

“We have been searching for world class music to introduce to the Japanese people and the gods have not ignored our efforts. After hearing Paul’s music I feel like we have discovered a diamond and are very honoured to be working with him. We are committed to helping him soar higher and higher,” said Tsunami CEO Hironobu Arai.

Paul will visit Japan in December, seeing six cities in just 10 days, to promote the release. The promotional tour will include concerts in Tokyo and Osaka.

“The idea of playing to an entirely new audience is both inspiring and exciting,” says Greene. “Tsunami has been wonderful to deal with, their enthusiasm for the music and ambitions as a label are fantastic. I am very honoured to be involved with them.”

This isn’t the only travelling on the agenda for Paul. He’ll jet to North America in March for a series of shows including a performance at Canadian Musicfest. On returning home, Paul will unleash his highly anticipated new album. It’s scheduled for an April 2010 release.

If you want to catch Paul before he jets off, you can see him perform on his current Work Love Dance Trust tour.

Bimbadgen Blues, Roots, Funk, and Grooves @ Bimbadgen Estate, Hunter Valley – 12/9/09

On Saturday I made my second trip out to Bimbadgen’s annual Blues festival. It was a different experience to the last in more ways than one.

Firstly, the festival had a bit of a makeover this year. It’s now going under the name Bimbadgen Blues, Roots, Funk, and Grooves, but the changes aren’t simply about the name. The focus shifted to younger, more contemporary artists playing music that went beyond the traditional blues. If the crowds were any indication, the organisers are onto a winner with their vibrant new approach. Despite Coaster playing an hour away, the festival attracted plenty of 20-somethings keen to have a good time.

Unlike last year’s festival, the weather was on our side. While I left the festival soggy in 2008, the sun came out for an unseasonably warm day. It was lovely to bask in the summery conditions, but it made the lines at the bar seem all the more unreasonable. I’ve been a regular visitor to Bimbadgen Estate during A Day on The Green concerts and festivals, but I have never seen a line like this. It snaked all the way down the hill. I hoped to see it get shorter as the day wore on, but no such luck. When I eventually gave in and jumped onto the end of the queue, it took me an hour to get to the front. One bar simply wasn’t enough for a crowd of this size on such a hot day. Announcers apologised for the inconvenience, so I can only hope the situation will be remedied next time around.

While alcohol and sunshine are important elements of any winery concert, the real drawcard is the music. My sister and I parked ourselves near the vineyard stage just in time to see Dialectrix. I’m not the greatest fan of hip hop music, but I was still impressed by the freestyling skills. Anyone that can rap about chardonnay and their loyal fans down the front gets my vote.

The dancing girls near the stage got some company when Ash Grunwald appeared. Enthusiastic fans seemed to come from everywhere, desperate to get a little closer to this acclaimed blues and roots artist. This was music which got back to the blues sounds I love: earthy and primal with squealing guitars and dirty melodies. But I was faced with a dilemma. With so many folks dancing near the stage, surely this would be the best time to join that dreaded drinks queue, right? And so I did. It was still long, but not as terrible as I’d seen it before. Sadly I arrived back to my seat just as Ash was wrapping up his set. What I heard sounded fantastic, but I’d have loved to see more of it.

Settled down with my bubbly, I could really focus on Blue King Brown. On seeing them support Santana a few years ago I remember thinking they were technically amazing but lacking something. The tunes seemed repetitive, running into each other with little differentiation. They needed some hooks or melodies to draw us in, something to match the energy. I still felt that, but I couldn’t deny the effect they had on the crowd. Their performance was theatrical and vibrant, and while it wasn’t my favourite of the night it was compelling nonetheless.

After the buzz generated by Ash Grunwald and Blue King Brown, the mellow indie tunes of The Panics seemed like a little bit of a letdown. They were wonderful, but perhaps not the best choice of headliner. At least, that’s what the crowds leaving in droves led me to believe. I couldn’t fault the band, but they just didn’t have the electricity the audience seemed to want. It’s a shame, because they deserved a much better reception than this.

Bimbadgen Blues, Roots, Funk, and Grooves showed a lot of potential in its new guise. Not everything went smoothly, but I’m sure we’ll see those creases ironed out next year as the festival goes from strength to strength.

Jimmy Barnes and Guy Sebastian Hold Steady on Aussie Charts

It’s another week on top of the charts for locals Jimmy Barnes and Guy Sebastian. Jimmy held steady at the top of the albums charts with The Rhythm and The Blues, despite strong competition from fellow Aussie Kate Miller-Heidke. Her album Curiouser is up three positions this week, and breathing down Jimmy’s neck at number two.

Also making his presence felt is John Farnham at number six. His national tour no doubt has something to do with his greatest hits compilation The Essential 3.0 climbing five spots.

Not a lot has changed in the singles charts. Guy Sebastian’s still at number one with “Like It Like That.” Kate’s still at number three with “The Last Day on Earth.”

If only we had a few more Aussies to keep them company! Jess Mauboy did jump a whopping 11 spots to land at number 11 this week, so I’m predicting her newie “Up/Down” will crack the top 10 next time around.

Ashleigh Toole Leaves Australian Idol on Rock Night

Australian Idol rocked this week with special guest mentor and judge Suzi Quatro. But before we could get into the business, someone had to go. This week saw Tim Johnston, Casey Barnes, and Ashleigh Toole land in the bottom three. Despite never putting a foot wrong in the comp, Ashleigh was the unlucky one ousted. My husband wonders whether all of her fans simply intended to vote as he did, rather than picking up the phone. Either way, she definitely didn’t deserve to leave us so soon.

Hayley Warner, our resident rock chick, was a natural choice to kick off the performances. Her choice of a Paramore number was spot on. I think she took everything Suzi said in her stride and delivered a performance even more compelling than the week before.

Casey Barnes is one of the nicest guys in the comp, so finding his rock edge was always going to be a challenge. I’m not sure he did it with Carolina Liar’s “I’m Not Over”, but we saw a little more angst than we have in the past. It was a solid effort for a singer clearly out of his comfort zone.

I loved Kate Cook’s cheeky choice of Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl.” Like Casey, she wasn’t in her comfort zone, but I had to admire her commitment. While parts of it were a little shouty for me, she certainly didn’t do it by halves. She gets an A for effort.

"The Knight" – Khan Manuel

With Tommy Emmanuel spending most of his time in Nashville these days, Australia is crying out for a guitar virtuoso. With his album The Knight, Khan Manuel steps up to fill those very big shoes.

Just like Tommy, Khan blends genres to create instrumental guitar tracks that combine the contemporary with classical flair.

The album starts out high energy rock numbers in the vein of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, before moving into more mellow jazz territory. We see the greatest electricity in “Down ‘n’ Dirty.” It’s a straight-up rock number which is recorded live to capture its spontaneity. I cringed at the chat-up banter that preceded “Smooth Talk,” but once those voices faded away it lived up to its sexy moniker.

While Khan does rock well, the more mellow numbers were a little more my speed. “Flamenco Nights” is the turning point, with its traditional Spanish tones acting like a breath of fresh air after the grittier rock tunes that came before. “Midnight Jazz” feels like 1970s George Benson, which is a very good thing indeed. “Wedding Song” is the perfect closer, a romantic piece which is every bit as dreamy as its name suggests.

Khan Manuel is one amazing guitarist, and his talent and passion for his craft is evident in The Knight. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
