Myf Warhurst Reveals Pearl Jam Affair

Spicks and Specks stunner Myf Warhurst has revealed she had an affair with Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard!

The Triple M host said Stone hit on her when the band toured in the 90s. She refused his advances then, but when he returned to Australia two months later begging for a date she couldn’t resist!

It may have been hot and heavy once, but it seems the radio darling didn’t leave a lasting impression on the grunge guitarist.

“About six years later I interviewed him, and he didn’t remember me,” Myf told radio listeners. “Girl in every port. They’re rock stars, they don’t remember you.”

I think I’d be seriously offended! It’s a good thing our Myf has a thick skin!

More 80s Legends Head Down Under

Is it just me, or does it feel kind of like it’s 1985? We’ve just had the announcements that The Bangles and Def Leppard are coming and now we can add a couple more 80s icons to the list.

The lead singer of Spandau Ballet, Tony Hadley, is teaming up with Paul Young for some massive shows jampacked with nostalgic tracks.

Tony Hadley was the voice of classic songs like “Gold,” “To Cut a Long Story Short,” “Only When You Leave” and my absolute favourite guilty pleasure “True.”

I also love Paul Young’s hits “Wherever I Lay My Hat,” “Everytime You Go Away,” and “Love of the Common People.”

Suffice to say, these shows are going to be awesome, and probably not all that pricy considering they’re playing some RSLs.

The dates are:

22 October 2008 – West Leagues Club, Newcastle
23 October 2008 – Palms @ Crown Casino, Melbourne
24 October 2008 – Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL
25 October 2008 – Fairfield RSL Club
29 October 2008 – Her Majesty’s Theatre, Adelaide
31 October 2008 – Regal Theatre, Perth

September is Good Music Month

Sydney’s State Theatre will celebrate Aussie music in September, with a stellar line up of local talent for Good Music Month.

It all kicks off with shows by one of our favourite honourary Aussies, Leo Sayer, on September 5 and 6. Then on September 12 The Whitlams will take the stage with a 35-piece all-female orchestra. How that for girl power? Then on September 23 Deep Blue Orchestra will show you a symphony doesn’t have to be stuffy.

It’s followed by a very special Morning of the Earth screening and concert. This surf film changed the cultural landscape, and on September 27 you can see why. Original performers Brian Cadd and Mike Rudd of Spectrum will join new kids Lior and Old Man River.

Good Music Month will come to an end on September 30 when Olivia Newton-John takes to the stage with some very special friends for a gala charity concert. The final line-up is yet to be announced, but it’s sure to be spectacular. The show will raise funds for the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre.

Tickets to the shows will be available through Ticketmaster from July 11.

A Baby Girl For Nicole and Keith

Country superstar Keith Urban and his Aussie actress wife Nicole Kidman are the proud parents of a new baby girl. Sunday Rose Kidman Urban was born on Monday morning in the couple’s adopted home Nashville. She tipped the scales at 6 lb. 7.5 oz, or 3 kilos.

“We want to thank everybody that has kept us in their thoughts and prayers,” Keith said in a statement on his website. “We feel very blessed and grateful that we can share this joy with all of you today.”

I’ve got to say, I’m thrilled about the birth and so happy for our golden couple. But Sunday Rose? Am I the only one who thinks it’s one step away from Sunday Roast?

Q & A with James from Beats Working

Beats Working have wowed Triple J listeners with their innovative blend of hip hop, soul, rock, and pop. Now they’re hoping to turn Australia on to their eclectic sound with the release of their debut album Harbour Drive on 30 July. I caught up with vocalist and music production master James ahead of this exciting release.

You’re releasing your debut album Harbour Drive at the end of the month. What can music lovers expect from it?
It’s a pretty eclectic album, so hopefully there is something there for most people. Even my mum is into it, but maybe she’s biased. We’re all into a lot of different music – from hip hop to rock to pop, funk, soul … and the album has a bit of all that thrown in. If you’re already a hip hop fan I think you’re going to like it, but hopefully it will expand to a larger audience.

Triple J has been a great supporter of your music. How important has their support been in getting your name out there?
Obviously having airplay and support on The Jay is really important for any new band. They’re such a great avenue for getting your music out there, and the people that run the station are obviously really passionate about Australian music.

Aussie guitar legend Phil Emmanuel plays on your new single “Hey Lena.” You’ve got such different styles so the collaboration might seem surprising to some people. How did it come about?
It was the last thing that we recorded on the album, actually. We had this section in the track – a breakdown, basically, that we were planning on putting a scratch section in. We decided that would be too much of a cliché in a song that is so different from most other hip hop, so we were sitting around scratching our heads, wondering what to do. Dan’s uncle runs a studio in Coffs Harbour, and is mates with Phil, who happened to be in town at the time. I’ve forgotten whose idea it was, but someone suggested we get a guitarist to do a solo … and within about an hour we were recording with Phil! It was amazing watching such a virtuoso, with complete mastery of his instrument, jam out in a studio. He was incredible. There is only about a 30-second solo on the track, but he recorded enough for us to put a wailing guitar solo on every track on the album if we had wanted to.

Your songs incorporate elements of pop, soul, funk, and more. What artists are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment the two albums that are really grabbing me are Seeing Sounds by N.E.R.D … I think those guys are at the forefront of making hip hop that is as innovative as possible but still has that pop edge that makes their music cross over. The other album is The Fire is on the Bird by Jackson Jackson – it’s the trumpet player form the Cat Empire, actually. That album really takes Australian hip hop to places that I never thought possible. Lyrically and musically it is a stunner.

New Song Obsession: "Anywhere" by Axle Whitehead

Axle Whitehead’s proved he’s no one hit wonder with his new single “Anywhere,” the follow-up to the massive “I Don’t Do Surprises.” His lush vocals are in fine form again, but the unique sound should be enough to silence those critics who say he’s just another Chris Martin. Great to see him churning out more fine music like this!

"Some Stranger's Ship" – Tim Loydell & the Deckchairs

Lately I’ve been grooving to local blues and roots outfit Tim Loydell & the Deckchairs. It’s an appropriate name for aSome Stranger’s Ship cover band who provide the perfect soundtrack for a mellow weekend.

Their debut EP is called Some Stranger’s Ship, and it’s a superb showcase for this talented Queensland quartet. It all starts with the brilliant “Morning Star,” a hooky modern love song which shows real romance with all its quirks and flaws.

Tim’s husky voice is an ideal fit for the dirty blues rock blend of “Cruisin’,” his sexy rasp sitting perfectly amongst the wailing guitars.

These musicians are first class and it’s never more evident than on “My Oh My,” a driving number which wouldn’t sound out of place on the next John Butler Trio album.

There are just six tracks on Some Stranger’s Ship, but it feels more like an album than an EP. There are no three-second pop songs for these lads. Instead each song has a depth and complexity that ensures you’ll get something new from this release every time you listen to it.

Our Kylie Gets OBE

Kylie Minogue has always been considered pop royalty, but now it’s official. Last night she received an Order of the British Empire at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

She wore a long white satin dress and gold high heels as she received the honour from Prince Charles. Her parents Carol and Ron and sister Dannii were there to see her presented with the OBE.

Kylie told The Herald Sun she was “totally blown away” by the ceremony.

“I just said to my sister before, ‘We’re in Buckingham Palace!’. Imagine saying that to us as kids. I was trying to breathe and take it all in and see everything.”

“It was very emotional seeing all these people from different walks of life joining together for this event. It is an incredible honour for me to receive this award,” she said.

“It makes me feel both humble and proud to be recognised for doing a job that I love so much.”

Congrats to Ms Minogue! She’s done Australia proud!
