“Double Crosser” – The Level Spirits

The Level Spirits first came to my attention last month with their fantastic new single “Take It Out.” Now that I’ve given their debut album Double Crosser a few spins, I’m thrilled to discover that this killer cut is no fluke.

The Level Spirits deliver good old-fashioned rock and roll. There are elements of blues, country, and rockabilly in the mix, which only add to the fun. Rather than sounding like a musical throwback, The Level Spirits present themselves as retro cool.

Lead singer Molly Jean Morrison anchors The Level Spirits’ contemporary image. She cuts a striking image with her flame-red hair, ballsy vocals, and sassy delivery. It’s hard to believe that The Level Spirits is Molly Jean’s first band, as she sings with a natural ease that suggests years in the biz. Her time in the world of burlesque has clearly served her well; she brings a raw sexuality to the band that’s really exciting.

The raucous opener and title track “Double Crosser” grabs you by the throat, demanding you to listen to what’s coming up next. And what follows is the kind of music you might expect to hear in a smoky juke joint. It’s always upbeat, but some deliciously dark lyrics add an extra layer. “Psycho For Your Love” and “Not as Much” were real highlights for me, but I daresay I’ll find a few more favourites the more I listen to the record.

The only disappointment for me was the closer, “Taste of the Same.” While it’s a solid track, it feels so much more modern and, dare I say it, generic than what had come before. I’m of the school of thought where albums should be whole, cohesive units, and this song just didn’t gel with the rest of the tunes.

Still, there’s an awful lot to dig about Double Crosser. There’s so much life to it, I’d love to see what these guys can do on stage. Sadly they’re only playing in Melbourne at this point, including their album launch at The Tote this Friday. If you’re a local, I strongly suggest you check it out!

Calling All Cars Support Queens of the Stone Age

Way to go Calling All Cars! The Melbourne rockers have been handpicked to support Queens of the Stone Age on their Soundwave sideshows.

Clearly big name acts are seeing something special in our boys. AC/DC picked Calling All Cars as their support act last year, and now they’ve earned a place on another red hot show.

Make sure you turn up early at the gigs, March 2 at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre and March 3 at Melbourne’s Palace, to see Calling All Cars in action. They’re promising to play a few new tunes from their forthcoming second album, so their sets should be something pretty special!

Perth Comes Together for Flood Relief

Floods in ToowoombaI’ve written a lot about the many flood fundraisers in Sydney and Melbourne, but musicians in other parts of the country are also doing their bit. One of the more exciting events on the agenda is Come Together, which takes over Perth’s Flying Scotsman on February 11.

Local indie legends Yummy Fur will reunite to headline the bill, but the acoustic set from The Ghost Hotel, and sweet tunes from up and coming singer-songwriter Karin Page should also be something special. Dom Mariani and Nick Sheppard, The Astor All Stars, and Andrew Ewing are amongst the other artists on the diverse bill.

Tickets are just $10 on the door, which is a pretty good deal for six hours of music. All money raised from the tickets will go to the Queensland Premier’s Disaster Relief Fund, and the Flying Scotsman will also kick in 20% of the night’s bar profits.

The Cat Empire Announces 10th Anniversary Tour

How time flies when you’re having fun. It seems The Cat Empire has been keeping us smiling with their brass soaked jazz tinged tunes for ten years now, and they’re celebrating the milestone with a tour.

It’s a diverse string of dates, with slots at festivals and appearances at some intimate jazz clubs and larger theatres. The band hasn’t played at some of these smaller bars in years, so they’re definitely going to be the pick of the dates.

Capital City Split, Announce Final Show

There must be something in the water this week. Hot on the heels of the announcement of Yves Klein Blue’s split comes word that Capital City are also calling it quits. After ten years, two albums, two EPs, and five drummers the Perth outfit has decided to call it a day. This video, for the band’s song “Let’s Throw Our Love Away,” is something to remember them by.

Capital City won’t leave us hanging though. They’ll say goodbye to all their fans with one final show at the Rosemount Hotel on March 5. Tickets go on sale today from Heatseeker, Planet Video, and Mills Record.

Fans will want to take a few extra dollars to the show. Capital City will offload all their remaining merchandise on the night, so you’re bound to get a bargain!

Nick Murphy Releases Sophomore Album

Nick Murphy’s new album What’s In Your Mind? hits record stores across the country today.

Nick’s been earning high praise as a solo artist, following the disbanding of his group The Anyones in 2005. His debut Breaking the Light was critically acclaimed, and scored plenty of airplay on Triple J and community radio.

The newie has been some five years in the making, but early indications are that it’s been worth the wait. You can look forward to hearing a harmony-rich blend of psychedelic sounds and folk music, with splashes of soul, pop, and country.

Nick’s planning to announce a full-scale tour soon, but ahead of that he’ll launch the album at Raval in Sydney on February 24. Tickets are available from the venue and online now!

Emperors Ready to Unleash “Sam”

After generating some major buzz through winning the Triple J Unearthed competition, a WAMI, and playing the Perth Big Day Out, Emperors figured it was about time to release something. That something comes in the form of Sam, an EP set to drop on February 12.

The band will launch Sam with a big show at Amplifier Bar on February 19. Sons of Rico, Stereoflower, and BudWeezer will support, so make sure you show up early.

If you want another fix, Emperors will also play the unfortunately named Crab Fest at Mandurah Foreshore on March 12. It might sound like the sort of place where you could catch a nasty disease, but with Abbe May, Novocaines, The Scotch of Saint James, and Young Revelry also on the bill it’ll be worth checking out.

The current crop of dates will support “Red Brick,” the first single released from the album. The first Shihad show is tonight, so music lovers in The Gong should get their skates on!

Sting Does His Bit for Flood Relief

Sting is doing his bit to give back to those working so hard to help Queensland recover from the recent floods. He’s issued an invitation for emergency workers to attend his Symphonicity concert in Brisbane next Monday as his special guest.

Recipients will be selected via ballot from the Red Cross, the State Emergency Service, and Volunteering Queensland. You couldn’t have more deserving folks in your audience, could you?

No doubt there will be a few tears as Sting dedicates “Fragile” to the flood victims, as he has throughout this Aussie tour. Sting has also donated the use of his song “Fields of Gold” to Sony’s recently released Flood Relief: Artists for the Flood Appeal album. He’s also made a personal donation to relief efforts, and encourages others to do the same.

“The spirit of community that has grown out of this devastation has been inspirational,” Sting said in a statement.  “I’ve contributed to a benefit compilation CD and like many others, made a personal donation to the ongoing flood relief efforts. It’s a small gesture, but in the wake of this tragedy, it’s important to help out however possible.”

Of course, Sting has more to spare than the rest of us, but isn’t it wonderful to see artists digging deep and helping us out? Hats off to him.
