Sophie Koh Releases Stunning “I Understand” Single

Sophie Koh has captivated me with “I Understand,” the second single lifted from her forthcoming album Oh My Garden.

So many songs have been written about break-ups, but few are quite as searing as this one. There are no hysterics or desperate pleas, simply a resignation and sadness for love lost. Ben Lee and Brad Wood helped Sophie pen the track that she calls “one of the most personal songs” she’s ever written.

I remember catching Sophie Koh supporting Howie Day a few years ago. Her name stuck with me, and I’m thrilled to see the way she’s maturing as an artist. This song is stellar. She’ll launch it for her hometown fans in Melbourne at The Toff in Town on May 31.

Q & A with Sui Zhen

Sui Zhen is charming Australia with her quirky new album Two Seas. I recently caught up with this singer-songwriter to chat about the new release, her forthcoming tour, and what comes next.

You’ve just released your debut album Two Seas. What can you tell me about it?
I wanted to make an album that would be comfortable to listen to. Songs that speak to you on a personal level, that hopefully can live a long life with the listeners. I really focused on the songwriting ahead of instrumentation and experimentation; I wanted to practice the rules before breaking them. The role of ‘Arranger’ was really important on this album and that’s where Tony Dupe weaved in his wonderful magic.

I believe you did plenty of travelling while writing and recording the album. How did those adventures influence Two Seas?
The biggest thing I took from those adventures was how to maintain inspiration for the music I was making. Sometimes you write songs ahead of your actual experiences, and it takes time to find their meaning for you.

A year filled with farewells, departure gates and an overall sense of longing for people and feelings that had come and gone certainly fuelled my passion for the songs. It’s like Charlie Brown says, “I say too many goodbyes and not enough hellos!”

Though I’d written and recorded most of the songs prior to travelling, when I was based in an old shop in Redfern. I went to the Red Bull Music Academy in early 2010 (RBMA) just when I’d finished the first mixes and spent the rest of that year overseas visiting friends and family. It was important to take time off the production side of things to get perspective on the album as a whole, and to make that decision that it was ‘finished’.

I hear you’ve been working on this album for the last few years. Why did it take so long to finish?
That’s a good question. RBMA was a catalyst for some big life changes. I went there with a near complete debut LP and left with heartbreak, new love, a new band and a whole lot of travelling ahead of me. I became a little side-tracked with ‘life’.

When I returned to Australia in late 2010, I worked on other arts projects until I was able to move to Melbourne mid 2011 and settle down somewhat. I became a partner in a start-up web-channel (InFrame.tv) and finally set about release plans for Two Seas.

I believe that when you were visiting your family in Bahrain you finally decided the album was done. What was it about your time there that led you to that decision?
I was demo-ing a lot while I was away from home. Mostly using Garageband and the laptop mic making Grimes-esque pop songs. It was when I had about twenty new demos that I decided it was time to draw the line with the album, give it a name and call it done.

I was staying with my step-mother in her apartment that looked out over the ocean ahead of a sea of other luxury apartment/hotels. It could have been a really sterile environment but the handful of friends I met there made it a home of sorts, with our nightly pool parties on the rooftops. It was the first time I felt enough distance from all the emotional drama of the start of the year. I learned that Bahrain literally meant the meeting of ‘two seas’, and it stuck.

You worked with Tony Dupe on the album, who’s produced for so many great people like Holly Throsby and Jack Ladder. What did he bring to your sound?
I can’t thank Tony enough for giving me the album I wanted. Early on in our collaboration I’d said I wanted to make something that could be performed solo or with a band. I didn’t want the songs to be co-dependent on the production.

We worked together from Redfern to Berlin for most of the tracking phase. I would send him a bunch of stems with vocals, q-chord, accordian, double bass, trumpet, electric guitars etc. He would then pick a strong vocal to work from and build the arrangement up from there. He added clarinet, cello, more guitar and I think even a trombone. Sometimes there would be just one ornamental flourish used from each take. But within Tony’s arrangement, it would make the song complete.

He’s an amazing producer to work with. He takes time to learn about you so he can bring your personality to the forefront. And he gives you an album that you will love for years to come.

Your music seems to have so many influences that it defies classification. How would you describe it?
Haha. I think you described my personality; I am very curious and I love music of all genres but I am very specific about which artists I choose to follow. I wanted to focus my Sui Zhen music into a more stable position, so it doesn’t try to encapsulate all the influences I‘ve absorbed, as that can become confusing for listeners.

With this album at least, I’ve hoped to accompalish folk-pop, alt-country, lyrical and melodic songwriting. With the next, I’ll be more adventurous and will include re-worked versions of those garage-band demos I mentioned.

I thought the video for your single “Little Frog” was just gorgeous. Did you have much to do with that creative process?
Yes I did. I created the animation with some help from my siblings to sew a few clouds here and there, and adjust the fringe on the girl to make it appear like wind was blowing.

It’s the result of an all encompassing craft experiment started back in 2008 for Even Books. I didn’t do much with the animation at the time and it sat quietly on a harddrive for a couple of years before I re-edited it to “Little Frog” just last year.

In my other life I am a videographer working predominantly in VHS and stop-motion animation.

You’re preparing to tour Two Seas later this month. Are you looking forward to bringing its songs to the people?
Most definitely. It’s been so wonderful to hear the feedback so far, especially from community radio stations. It’ll be great to perform now that people will be more intimate with the songs.

You’ve played both solo and full band shows in the past. What can fans expect at the upcoming shows?
For most of the album launch shows I’ll be performing as a three-piece with my brother Dan Stanley Freeman and long time collaborator and friend, Joe Gould. We’re a really close band and have a lot of fun with our on stage banter.

The support bands are hand-picked, with Jessica Says and Emma Russack duo-ing as Elva in Melbourne, Carry Nation joining us in Sydney and Newcastle and Epithets in Brisbane. Fanny Lumsden is doing the whole tour with us and she’s charming. Plus there’s more!

Do you have anything else in the pipeline?
Fox + Sui will release Taboo EP in the next couple of months on Two Bright Lakes. We’re then planning an LP later this year.

I’m also hoping to put out another Sui Zhen release in October, fingers crossed!

Wheatus Announce Aussie Tour

I frankly haven’t thought of Wheatus since their song “Teenage Dirtbag” unexpectedly tore up charts around the world ten years ago. But it seems that despite line-up changes, lawsuits, intellectual property theft, interstate art heist investigations, and a lack of any discernible hit since the New York indie rock act are still kicking on.

And strangely enough, they’re bringing their “Still a Teenage Dirtbag” tour to Australia. They’ve even scored a slot at Newcastle’s Fat as Butter Festival! When they play here you’ll get to hear that big hit and god knows what else, but that’s the main thing right?

Any surprise that the venues are small, and that tickets for the headlining shows cost just $35?

19 September 2012 – Corner Hotel, Melbourne
20 September 2012 – Metropolis Fremantle
21 September 2012 – The Hi-Fi Sydney
22 September 2012 – Fat As Butter Festival, Newcastle
23 September 2012 – The Hi-Fi, Brisbane

My City Screams Releases “Surroundings” EP

Sydney post hard-core outfit My City Screams released their long awaited new EP, Surroundings, to iTunes today.

The mini-album features six full throttle tracks including the first single “Counterparts.” The band says this sophomore EP is their biggest achievement to date. It shows a band that’s matured since recording their debut, No Mirrors, No Reflections, and notching up plenty of live experience. Their trademark energetic sound, with big guitar breaks and heavy hitting bass, is there, but it’s more seasoned this time around.

My City Screams will back up the EP release with a national tour in June. Watch this space for dates!

Sui Zhen Releases “Two Seas”

The nomadic Sui Zhen has used her travels as creative fodder for her debut album Two Seas.

It’s truly a global release, with tracks written, mixed, and recorded here, there, and everywhere. Songs written in the bustle of Sydney were laid down in the calmer surrounds of a Southern Highlands church before being arranged in Berlin and finally mixed in on the New South Wales South Coast. While visiting family in Bahrain, Sui Zhen knew the time was right to stop collecting songs and unleash them on the public.

The internationally influenced disc is best described as indie-folk, although the dashes of country, pop, and other genres mean it doesn’t neatly fit in any box. The single “Little Frog” gives you some indication of what’s in store.

Two Seas hits stores today, which gives fans a few weeks to familiarise themselves with the songs before Sui Zhen takes the album on the road. See this exciting singer-songwriter and her full band at the following launch shows:

6 June 2012 – Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane
13 June 2012 – Yours and Owls, Wollongong (Free)

George Michael Finally Confirms Aussie Tour

I was thrilled to wake up to the news that George Michael is returning to our shores. I was disappointed when illness derailed his plans to bring his Symphonica tour to Australia earlier this year, so it’s exciting to see he hasn’t forgotten about us during his recovery.

George put on one of the best shows of the year when he toured here in 2010. With the addition of a symphony orchestra and the promise of some long awaited new material, these Aussie dates are sure to take things up a notch. While I look forward to hearing some new tunes, I’m also excited to hear he’ll play hits from way back in the Wham! days and some choice cover versions.

Tickets for the following shows go on sale to the public on May 10 at noon:

13 November 2012 – Entertainment Centre, Adelaide
17 November 2012 – All Phones Arena, Sydney
21 November 2012 – Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne
27 November 2012 – Entertainment Centre, Brisbane
1 December 2012 – Hope Estate Winery, Hunter Valley

The Autumn Isles Play Melbourne

Perth act The Autumn Isles are taking their brand of psychedelic pop to Melbourne and its suburbs for four big shows in just three nights!

Kicking off tonight, the band will treat discerning music lovers to tracks from their colourful debut album Kaleidoscopes. This isn’t a band that relies on studio trickery, so I’m sure they’ll shine in the live setting. Melbournites can catch them at the following shows over the next few days:

3 May 2012 – Bertha Brown, Melbourne
5 May 2012 – Purepop Records, St Kilda (3 pm)
5 May 2012 – Northcote Social Club, Northcote
6 May 2012 – The Retreat, Abbotsford

Mia Dyson Gives Away Long Awaited New Music

Mia Dyson made a big impression on the Australian music charts in the last naughties, but seemed to disappear just as quickly. But it turns out she didn’t give up the dream; she just relocated it to the United States.

After three years touring America with big name artists like Stevie Nicks, Dave Stewart, and Chris Isaak, Mia’s reconnecting with her local fans. The independent artist askedmusic lovers to pre-order her new album through the Pledge Music campaign. These donations will then go towards funding the release. She actually raised enough to make the album in just one week, so Mia wants to say thanks for the support.

Which brings me to “Tell Me,” an achingly gorgeous new track that Mia’s giving away to her fans.

“Tell Me is a track I felt would really resonate with fans of my previous albums,” she explained. “It gives a hint of what I’ve been up to in the studio, so I really wanted fans to hear it first, before we get to the craziness of an album campaign later in the year!”

You can hear the song here, and if you like it just sign up to the Mia Dyson mailing list for the free download. Hopefully that will tide you over until the new album, dubbed The Moment, hits stores in August.

Nine Sons of Dan Tour Forthcoming EP

Nine Sons of Dan have introduced us to their forthcoming EP The New Kids with the rocking new single “Diamond Skin.”

The single shows us the way Nine Sons of Dan have matured since their last release, no doubt under the guidance of American producer J.R. McNeely (Amberlin, Paramore). It hits harder, but it’s got this strong melodic core that anchors it so well. While J.R. McNeely took the reins on “Diamond Skin” the remaining five tracks were overseen by Forrester Savell (Karnivool, The Butterfly Effect).

The New Kids should be a big release for the band who took out the rock category in last year’s New Artist to Radio Awards. It’ll hit record store shelves around the world on June 29, not long after the band wraps up their support slots for The Darkness.

Drummer Morgan “Flakey” Blake says the single captures the energy of Nine Sons of Dan’s live shows, so if you dig it you’ll probably want to see them in the flesh. Conveniently enough once their dates with The Darkness wrap up they’re taking the EP on the road. Catch the Gold Coast lads at the following shows this July:

12 July 2012 – Port Macquarie Hotel, Port Macquarie (18+)
13 July 2012 – Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle (18+)
