Diesel Gives Guitar Lessons

If you’ve ever wanted to play guitar like Diesel, here’s your chance. He’s just released an instructional kit called Song Companion.

The guitar tab book and DVD were designed as a starting point for aspiring guitarists. It will teach you how to play some of Diesel’s biggest hits, including “Tip of my Tongue,” “15 Feet of Snow” and “Cry in Shame.” Song Companion is available in all good music shops now.

In the meantime, Diesel’s also been working hard on a new album with long-time bandmates Lee Moloney and Richie Vez.

“I’m really enjoying the dynamic of a three-piece band. After going through the recording process together, we have definitely forged something and are starting to hit our stride as a unit”, he said in a press release.

The album is due out in early 2008, but you can get a sneak peek of the new material when he visits a town near you soon. He’ll hit the Chelsea Heights Hotel in Victoria tonight, and is travelling all around the country over the next few months. Check his website for all the dates.

Jimmy Barnes Rocks on Radio

He’s been a rock star, a television host, and soon he’ll add radio presenter to his already impressive resumé. Jimmy Barnes has just signed on to host the popular Triple M program, Planet Rock.

“I am really excited to be taking the reigns of the new look Planet Rock. The new format of the show is going to be great fun. It’s all about the music for me, so I can promise it will be full of a great mix of old and new with a few personal stories thrown in,” Barnesy told AAP.

Barnesy will dig into his own record collection to program the three-hour show. I remember listening to Jimmy guest-programming a radio show sometime ago, and he served up an awesome mix of classic rock and soul. It should be a lot of fun.

The revamped Planet Rock program launches nationally this weekend, and will air on Triple M stations and 43 syndicated channels around Australia. All the stations are listed on the Planet Rock website.

But don’t think Jimmy’s giving up his day job. His new album, Out of the Blue, is due out later this month, and he’s got plenty of gigs around the country to support its release.

Bobby Flynn @ Lizotte’s, Kincumber – 1 November 2007

Who’s the most influential artist to come out of Australian Idol? Is it Shannon Noll, whose skills saw him working with some of America’s best songwriters on his new album? What about Anthony Callea, who’s earning rave reviews for his work in musical theatre? Well, if you believe this year’s Australian Idol finalists, the one that’s made the greatest impact is Bobby Flynn.

He may not have set the charts alight or packed out an entertainment centre, but last year’s seventh place-getter inspired more Idols this year than any other.

“I believe he completely changed Aussie Idol,” said Matt Corby. “He changed the rules,” added Jacob Butler.

That Bobby could do so much during his relatively short time in the competition is a testimony to his talent. It’s something I was lucky enough to witness for myself last night at Lizotte’s. This intimate little venue in Kincumber is a world away from the massive Idol stage, but that’s a very good thing.

Bobby was ably supported by Canadian singer/songwriter Brian Campean. I can’t decide whether Brian was a genius or a madman. He could be both. His soaring voice was reminiscent of Jeff Buckley’s, and his guitar skills were incredible. But his unconventional melodies and lyrics struggled to connect with the crowd, who seemed more intent in gossiping amongst themselves. It’s a shame, as there was a lot to enjoy in his unique performance.

The chatter died down once Bobby took the stage. His original songs draw you in, with their ethereal melodies and his haunting vocals. I didn’t know most of these songs, but it allowed me to focus on their beautiful words. He’s not conventionally handsome, but his natural charisma casts a spell on his adoring audience. Watching him is indeed magical.

Songwriting is Bobby’s first love, but he’s not afraid to pepper his set with the cover versions Idol fans voted for. I was delighted to hear his evocative cover of The Church’s “Under the Milky Way” and his show-stopping rendition of “Superfreak.”

I caught up with Bobby after the show and was impressed by his gentle nature and his willingness to spend time with his fans. This was his third sold-out show at Lizotte’s, and he’s already making plans to return. I personally can’t wait.

Stars Raise Awareness of Climate Change

You may have seen Cate Blanchett talking about the Who On Earth Cares website on TV, but she’s not the only Australian celebrity supporting this fantastic climate change site.

Felix Riebl (The Cat Empire), Mark Seymour, Mia Dyson, Katie Noonan, and Jen Cloher have joined more than 13, 000 Australians who’ve signed on to raise awareness of this key environmental issue.

“I care about climate change because this world is an amazing, wonderful place, and I find it depressing to think that I was part of a species that wrecked so much of that beauty,” Felix says on his Who on Earth Cares profile.

“I am concerned about climate change because it will make the very world unliveable if we let climate change continue its course,” added Mia Dyson.

So don’t let it happen! Join these celebrities and sign up on the website. You’ll be inspired by the cool energy saving tips. The site will even help you compose a letter encouraging your local government member to develop more responsible climate change policies. But my favourite part is the interactive map, which lets you read what other environmentally conscious folks are doing in your neighbourhood. Check it out!

Justin Timberlake Helps Irwins’ Zoo

Megastar Justin Timberlake has sold out shows all around the country, but he won’t collect all the cash from his successful Australian tour. This sweet soul star will give 50c from every ticket to the Irwin family’s Australian Zoo.

Justin visited the world-famous wildlife park last time he was in Australia, and was taken by the native creatures on show.

“When I came here last time, it really hit me … I said to myself ‘What can I do?'” he told The Sunday Telegraph. “So 50c from every ticket sold on the Australian tour goes to the Wildlife Warriors.”

It may not sound like much, but his generous donation currently stands at $100, 000. Nice work Justin!

Stars Rock for Breast Cancer Awareness

Last night some of Australia’s greatest musicians played for a very special audience. Concert for the Cure was the perfect way to end breast cancer awareness month, and something the crowd of people touched by the disease won’t forget in a hurry.

The concert was the brainchild of 20-year-old Nicholas Vindin. The university student lost his mother to breast cancer four years ago, and wanted to help raise awareness of the disease amongst young people.

“When I finished school I knew I had to do not just something for Mum, but something for everybody affected by breast cancer,” Nicholas told The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Our dream was to have some of Australia’s top music artists, but I never thought it would come to this.”

With the help of cable music channel MAX, Nicholas assembled a dream bill of Powderfinger, Missy Higgins, Kev Carmody, and Nic Cester. He hopes the concert will become an annual event.

The concert had a special significance for Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning, whose sister-in-law is currently receiving treatment for breast cancer.

“Breast cancer has been incredibly well promoted, for want of a better word, and the awareness is really growing but it needs to continue,” he said. “Nearly everybody in Australia ends up being affected by cancer in some way.”

700 breast cancer survivors, their families, attended the invite-only concert and breast cancer nurses.

Most of us missed seeing it live, but you can watch its premiere on MAX this Saturday at 7:30 pm. You can also donate to the National Breast Cancer Foundation through the MAX website.

Halloween Watch in the Music Channel

Plenty of my friends in the b5media music channel are celebrating Halloween with me today. Here’s a look at what they’ve been up to.

You all knew Scott at Metal Martyr would come up with the goods. Those hard rocking folks are just made for satanic holidays like this, right? He’s compiled a very cool metal soundtrack for the holiday, featuring tracks like Iron Maiden’s “Number of the Beast” and White Zombie’s “I’m Your Boogyman.” Spooky stuff.

If you’re after some lighter songs to add to your Halloween mix tape, Bruce at Our Digital Music has you covered. His Halloween top 10 features “Monster Mash,” “Black Magic Woman,” and one of my personal favourites, “Werewolves of London.”

As if that wasn’t enough Halloween music, Deb at She Plays Music has posted plenty of ghoulish girly music videos. Check it out to watch some Cranberries, Suzi Quatro, and Dusty Springfield.

At The Production Side, Albert serves up a little Stone Temple Pilots and Ray Parker Jr. Who you gonna call?

Bruce is also celebrating at The Rock Dose. Make sure you stop by and check out today’s quote and video featuring none other than Ozzy Osbourne. It had to be, right?

Sammi’s featuring Danny Elfman at 52 Bands. This is the guy behind the spooky soundtracks of The Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and other Tim Burton classics.

Stuck for a Halloween costume? Mike at Big Apple Music Scene shows you how easy it is to look like Joey Ramone. Too cool!

Heather at Country Music Stop celebrates the season with a creepy classic from Alan Jackson.

Some say that Michael Jackson’s pretty scary today, but Roberta at Ear Sucker goes into the vault for her Halloween post. When I was little I couldn’t watch the clip for “Thriller,” and it still frightens me to this day!

Budding film makers may be interested in the cool Schoolyard Heroes contest Denise is talking about on News in Punk. You could win some creepy prizes, just for filming your Halloween party and posting it on YouTube.

Make sure you check out all these cool blogs for more thrills and chills this Halloween!

Aussie Halloween Hits

As a kid growing up in Australia, I was always a little bit jealous of Americans celebrating Halloween. I thought how wonderful it must be to dress up in scary costumes and score loads of free lollies. I actually tried it once in primary school, but none of the neighbours I visited had any goodies to give me and I didn’t have the heart to toilet paper their houses because of it.

So this year I figured I’m going to celebrate anyway. Everyone else at b5media is doing it, so why can’t I? To get you in the mood, here’s five of the best Australian spooky songs.

I had to kick things off with a little AC/DC. It’d be unAustralian not to. “Highway to Hell” is one of their best, and scariest, with the late great Bon Scott up front.

I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of The Scare. Their brand of chaotic punk just does nothing for me. But with a name like The Scare, and a song called “Bats!Bats!Bats!” I had to include it anyway!

Here’s Australia’s current dancefloor darlings Sneaky Sound System with their spooky hit “UFO.” This is the only live performance I’ve included here, basically because I don’t think the studio recording can match this for energy. Considering this is about spotting UFOs while you’re alone and far from home, it’s a strangely happy tune!

It’s not Halloween without monsters, so here’s the Something for Kate variety. I’ve always thought Paul Dempsey seemed far too calm for a man hunted down by monsters, but this is a very cool song nonetheless.

It wouldn’t be a Halloween list without Australia’s own Prince of Darkness, Nick Cave. “Red Right Hand” may be the creepiest song ever written. I love it!

Delta Bags Another Number One

Aussie golden girl Delta Goodrem knocked Matchbox Twenty off the top spot when her new album Delta debuted at number one this week. The single “This Life” is holding firm at number three after spending a couple of weeks at the top of the singles charts.

The Veronicas haven’t released their new album yet, but if the success of “Hook Me Up” is any indication it’s going to be another chart topper. After five weeks in the top ten, it’s still sitting pretty at number five on the charts.

Tarisai’s Tantrums End Her Idol Run

After a tumultuous week, Tarisai Vushe is the latest contestant to leave Australian Idol.

This week Tarisai hit back at accusations from public that she was “fake.” Following another technically superb but unemotional performance, Mark and Dicko agreed that she wasn’t showing her true self.

A visibly rattled Tarisai continued the confrontation after the show by swearing at Mark, slamming a door in Dicko’s face, and telling the media the pair had sabotaged her chances in the competition.

But I can’t help thinking the only person who sabotaged Tarisai was Tarisai. For every person that appreciates what you do, there’ll be others who don’t. Part of being a star is dealing with this negativity in a constructive way rather than throwing a tantrum.

After the judges said their goodbyes and wished her luck, Tarisai replied, “Thanks, even though I don’t mean it.”

I think Tarisai needs a serious attitude readjustment if she’s going to get anywhere in this business.

Natalie Gauci and Marty Simpson joined Tarisai in the bottom three. Natalie was a big surprise considering her touchdown-worthy performance, but I guess someone has to be there.

Next week we can look forward to big band night, which is always one of my favourites. While Carl’s a natural here, it’s going to take the remaining contestants out of their comfort zones. Expect some real surprises!
