“The X Factor” Wash Up

I was waiting until the live shows to write about The X Factor, but after spending last night screaming at my television I figured I’d fast track some posting.

The X Factor has had its critics, especially those who applauded the “resting” of Australian Idol, but I was thrilled to see another musical talent show on Aussie television. I’d watched all the auditions and picked my favourites, and was really enjoying the process. At least I was until last night, when it seemed that the best performers wouldn’t make it to the live shows after all.

With the exception of Natalie Imbruglia, every judge had a few dog acts. I just didn’t expect them to make the final cut.

My first disappointment came when Guy Sebastian cut Jahmaking it Funky, a band that hadn’t put a foot wrong in the competition thus far. Criticising them for sticking to reggae seems a bit hypocritical to me when bands like Mahogany and Kharizma are sticking to R ‘n’ B. But there were more shocks to come when Guy opted to put Luke and Joel into the finals over Lazy J and Big Guy. I wanted to get behind Luke and Joel as a fellow Novacastrian, but they just haven’t delivered. Lazy J and Big Guy had their flaws too, but at least they showed some originality. As far as I can see it, Guy has one serious contender in Mahogany. Kharizma aren’t bad, but everything they can do Mahogany simply do better.

There were more shocks to come when Ronan Keating decided to give Altiyan Childs yet another chance. I just don’t get it. He hasn’t remembered the lyrics once, and even when he does perform he seems like a bit of a poser. I couldn’t believe he made it through the auditions, so I’m shocked to see him get to the main event. Something tells me he’s going to go pretty early.

But my biggest shocks came when Kyle did the culling. I don’t claim to know everything there is to know about music, but I know what I like. And what I liked was Darcy, TJ, and George. Three of my favourite competitors, now all gone. Kyle has a snowball’s chance in hell of winning this thing.

Which left Natalie, who couldn’t put a foot wrong because her group was so strong. Still, I was thrilled to see her put through the stand-outs, Sarah and Hayley. Any one of the other girls could have easily got that third place, so I’m happy there.

I was excited about The X Factor, but after last night’s show I’m feeling deflated. We were meant to be looking for performers with something special, and there seems to be only a handful left that fit the bill. What do you think of the judges’ decisions?

Your Band Could Play On the Pulse

The line-up for Brisbane’s youth festival On The Pulse is starting to take shape, with just two slots left. And if you’re in a band, you could take one of them.

If you want to play on the same stage as Finabah, Flicks, Burning Brooklyn, and Words Versing Verses just head to the On the Pulse festival website to register your interest. All you need to do is to submit a MySpace page link, and the judges will check you out. Six bands will become finalists, and then the final two will be decided with a public vote.

Submissions close on Wednesday September 22 so don’t procrastinate; head to the website for a chance to take your music to the Brisbane masses on October 23!

Win Juke Kartel’s “Levolution” Album

I hinted at it earlier this week, and now that the weekend is upon us it seemed the perfect time to announce that Juke Kartel competition. I have two copies of the band’s new album Levolution still wrapped in plastic and ready to find new homes with my Sounds of Oz readers.

Levolution is the latest album from the Melbourne rock act fronted by Toby Rand. It helps music lovers catch up on the band’s history and where they’re heading, with six tracks from the album Nowhere Left to Hide and six new songs. Each features strong hooks, lush instrumentation, and plenty of heart.

Winning a copy of Levolution couldn’t be simpler. Just leave a comment below to let me know why you want to add to the CD to your collection, and then cross your fingers! Entries close at 5 pm EST next Friday September 17, and I’ll announce the winners on Monday September 20. Make sure you leave your e-mail address (which won’t appear to other readers) so I can get back in touch with you if you’re one of the lucky winners!

Avalon Drive Reunite for Hometown Show

Brisbane band Avalon Drive broke some hearts when they parted ways in November 2008, so fans will be thrilled to see they’re getting back together for one show next year.

The Hi-Fi Bar in Brisbane is the place to be on February 5, when the band takes us on a trip down memory lane with songs from their debut self-titled album and more recent discs.

It promises to be a pretty special night with a number of mystery guests set to appear!

Tickets are on sale from the venue now. While the show’s not for many months, I wouldn’t wait around if you’re keen to go. You know this one’s going to sell out!

Juke Kartel Chat with Fans Online

I know there’s not a lot of notice on this one, but if you’re a Juke Kartel fan you’ll want to point your browsers to Ustream in a couple of hours.

From 11 am EST this morning (or 6 pm PST if you’re in the US) the band will host a live video chat with their fans. This is your chance to ask all those burning questions, or just touch base with the Juke Kartel.

I hope some of you can make it. And make sure you keep your eyes on Sounds of Oz as I’m about to announce a cool Juke Kartel giveaway, and I’d hate for you to miss it!

City Riots Singer Held at Knifepoint

You’d assume that the post offices of Adelaide would be pretty safe places, but Ricky Kradolfer of City Riots has another tale to tell. The singer was recently held at knife point as he waited to mail posters for their upcoming September shows!

But Ricky survived and mailed the posters, so he’d probably be pretty grateful if you got out to the gigs. City Riots will headline shows around the country with The Chemist and play a few festivals as well.

The shows will give you a sneak peek at tracks from City Riots’ debut album, which they recorded recently in the States with legendary producer Bjorn Thorsrud (Smashing Pumpkins, Dandy Warhol, Billy Corgan).

Here are all the dates!

9 September 2010 – Big Sound, Brisbane
17 September 2010 – Northcote Social Club, Melbourne
18 September 2010 – Jive, Adelaide
24 September 2010 – Spectrum, Sydney
25 September 2010 – Coaster Festival, Gosford
20 November 2010 – Open Arms Festival, Coffs Harbour

Peter Gabriel Pulls Out of Aussie Melbourne Cup Concert

Peter Gabriel has cancelled his upcoming performance at the 150th anniversary of the Melbourne Cup citing “scheduling issues.” At least that’s the official line. However the folks at Undercover Music are claiming that poor ticket sales are really behind the decision.

We’ve seen this kind of thing time and time again, and frankly I’m tired of it. It shows no respect for the fans that were keen enough to buy the tickets. If you’re not going to earn a big enough slice of pie for the trip, suck it up. I know Australia is a long way for these performers to come, but it should never be contingent on how full the venues are going to get.

To promoter Andrew McManus’ credit, he’s going ahead with the gig anyway. Brian Wilson will step in as the headliner to play alongside Daryl Braithwaite, Blue King Brown, Danielle Spencer, and Kate Ceberano. At least you can count on the Aussies, although I’m sure that’s cold comfort for those Peter Gabriel fans out there.

Earl Cole Does Rat Pack in Perth

Western Australia’s king of swing Earl Cole is gearing up for another show at Mosmans Restaurant. This time around fans will be treated to the songs of Rat Pack favourites Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jnr.

Earl has just returned from performances in Malaysia, so doubt the locals are keen to welcome him home. Earl frequently sells out shows, but he assures me that there will be just one Rat Pack performance. If you want to go, make sure you book your tickets quickly.

They cost $110, and include a three-course meal and a glass of bubbles on arrival. Call (08) 9383 3388 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              (08) 9383 3388      end_of_the_skype_highlighting to book your seats.

Natalie Bassingthwaighte Has a Baby Girl

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - MAY 02: Singer and TV host Natalie Bassingthwaighte arrives at the 52nd TV Week Logie Awards at Crown Casino on May 2, 2010 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Getty Images)

Congratulations to Natalie Bassingthwaighte and Rogue Traders drummer Cameron McGlinchey, who became first time parents yesterday. The engaged couple is celebrating the birth of their daughter Harper Rain Sinclair McGlinchey.

The little one was born at a private Melbourne hospital and tipped the scales at 3.22 kg.

“Natalie Bassingthwaighte is a mum,” her manager Mark Byrne confirmed last night. “Mum and daughter are both perfect.”

I’m not normally one to get clucky about such things, but I can’t wait to see whether the pair have passed on those musical genes!

Bliss N Eso Top ARIA Albums Chart

Many acts have tried, but local hip hop act Bliss N Eso have ended Eminem’s six-week reign at the top of the ARIA Albums Charts. The band’s fourth studio album Running on Air is their first to achieve the top spot. Congrats to them!

It’s been a great week for Aussie albums. Washington is enjoying her first top 10 record, with I Believe You Liar taking out the third possie. She’s just ahead of Birds of Tokyo, who have fallen two positions to sit at number 4 with their self-titled album. Kylie Minogue has also dropped this week. Her album Aphrodite now sits at number 7, down three places. Rounding out the top 10 is Angus & Julia Stone with their unstoppable sophomore effort Down the Way.

Eminem has retained the top spot on the singles chart though. “Love the Way You Lie,” featuring Barbados beauty Rihanna has now held the top spot for four weeks. A few Aussie acts including Michael Paynter, Birds of Tokyo, and Yolanda Be Cool & Dcup are hovering in the top 30 though, so hopefully it won’t be too long before we see some local talent in the top 10.
