Who’s Your Most Eligible Music Bachelor?

Most often I’m a serious music journalist. But sometimes I’m just a woman who loves to admire good looking men. So every year I like to cast my eye over the contenders for the Cleo Bachelor of the Year title to see which local musos are in the running.

Celebrities At Crown Oaks Day

It makes sense for musicians to feature prominently in the list. John Mayer once said that a guitar was the ultimate airbrush, and he’s probably right. Although I’m just as likely to become weak-kneed when a man sits behind a piano or drum kit!

Isn’t it interesting to see Rob Farnham make the list? I remember thinking the Lanstrum singer had the potential to be hot when his band Nana-Zhami toured with John Farnham in the late 90s. Back then he was a little young and it felt a little pervy, but now he’s on my radar!

I still feel it’s a little pervy to consider Short Stack’s Andy Clemmensen as an eligible bachelor, but the 21-year-old has also made this year’s cut. I’m sure the tweens are voting in their droves though!

I’m much more interested in DJ Angus Gruzman. I think my inner hippie chick is responding to all that long shiny hair and all the vinyl behind him.

Rob “Millsy” Mills is another lad right up my alley. I must admit, his appeal was lost on me during his Idol stint. But you whack that man in tights and put him on a musical theatre stage and my heart beats faster.

I’m also a fan of Sam Clark. While he’s better known as a soap actor, he’s showing real promise as a singer-songwriter. He’s also easy on the eyes!

For the indie girls we’ve got Royce Akers of Hot Little Hands. He’s not my cup of chai, but he scores points for loving Tom Waits.

Dave Rennick of Dappled Cities also has that indie cool thing going on, but perhaps a little too much. Honestly he looks like a bit of a tool standing there scowling with his sunglasses on.

If you want to vote for any of these talented musos just click their names in this post!

Danimals Release “Fox” From The Lab Recording Sessions

I’ve been waiting with bated breath to see what would come of Danimalsdream recording sessions in New York courtesy of The Lab, and now I can hear for myself.

“Fox” is the result of a week spent writing in the Dap Kings’ Dunham Studios in Brooklyn and another week recording at the legendary Electric Lady Studios. Mark Ronson and TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek added the finishing touches on the tune. If you want to learn more about the process, check out the behind-the-scenes videos at TEDthelab.com.

You can have a listen to the track below and if you love it, download it. If you’re one of the first 5000 to download the song, you’ll go in the draw to win one of 20 Numark PT01 Portable Turntables and an autographed 7 inch Danimals single. Free music and the chance to win some great prizes sounds like awesome incentive to me!

Do Our Singer Songwriters Sound Like Little Girls?

On reading my review of Angus & Julia Stone’s latest disc Down the Way a friend asked me whether I could write an article on the phenomenon of young Australian women who sing like little girls.

My immediate response was to come to the defence of the women he mentioned. They’ve created some of my favourite albums in recent years. But the more I thought about it, the more I had to admit that he was on to something.

There are definite similarities between the voices of many of our local female singer-songwriters, Julia Stone, Lisa Mitchell, Sarah Blasko et al. There’s a certain breathiness about their delivery, an almost squeakiness about their sound. I think it’s more flattering to compare them to classic artists like Melanie Safka than little girls, but the fact remains that we have a lot of women who seem to sound the same.

I wonder, do record companies see they’re onto a good thing and decide to strike while the iron’s hot, signing up as many sound-alikes as they can? Does it come from local artists influencing others in their niche? Or is it all simply a coincidence?

Hoodoo Gurus Release Travel on Wheels Webseries to Promote New Album

Have you seen the Hoodoo Gurus new webseries Travel on Wheels yet?

The series is a tongue-in-cheek look behind the scenes of the making of the band’s new album Purity of Essence. A mockumentary with a healthy dose of comedy, it’s a little Metallica’s Some Kind of Monster and a little Spinal Tap. Although if you believe the band, it’s more like “a dysfunctional Partridge Family!”

“I’d always wanted us to do a radio serial back in the band’s early days,” explained lead singer Dave Faulkner. “I imagined we’d do an episode with a new song each week, something written especially for the show. Finally, after all this time I’ve realised my fantasy though here I get to be Fellini with this rockumentary, or whatever it is.”

There are a couple of episodes already up, but new ones will be added each week until there are six in all.

If you like the songs you hear in the webisodes, make sure you grab a copy of the Hoodoo Gurus latest album Purity of Essence when it hits stores on March 12.

Melbourne Zoo Celebrates Earth Hour with Aussie Acoustic Show

Earth Hour Unplugged is back for another year at Melbourne Zoo. Instead of sitting home in the dark, why not head out to this year’s eco-friendly acoustic concert featuring Tim Rogers and local acts Wagons and Blackchords?

While food and beverages will be on sale on site you’re free to BYO, so load up your picnic basket with gourmet treats and a few bottles of bubbles and prepare to soak up the good vibes. It all happens on March 27, with lights out from 8:30 to 9:30 pm.

Tickets are on sale now through Melbourne Zoo’s website and 1300 ZOOS VIC. Limited tickets will be available at the gate, but I recommend getting them early to avoid missing out. Gates open at 5:30 pm, which will give you a little time to meet the animals before the show starts at 6:30 pm.

Cherish Live Concert Raises Funds for Young Hospital

Some of Australia’s top entertainers will travel to the country town of Young for a charity show later this month.

Cherish Live will help raise funds for a renal unit at Young Hospital. Currently people requiring kidney dialysis must travel to Canberra three times a week for the treatment, a four-hour return trip which takes its toll on the already sick patients.

Evermore, Thirsty Merc, and Australian Idol graduates Luke Dickens, Roshani Priddis, and Teale Jakubenko will headline the charity show.

This is a really great cause, so I hope anyone who’s even close to Young gets out there and supports it.

Tickets are available online for $80 plus the booking fee.

General Pants Champions Singles with Major Label

General Pants has branched out into the world of music with its new singles only record label, Major Label.

The clothing retailer has celebrated the launch with the release of three tracks handpicked by the street-savvy chain’s staff. The singles are a real mixed bag. There’s the sweet folk-pop stylings of “Phone Call” from High Highs, the grittier garage sounds of “Another Trick” from Circle Pit, and the trippy electronic tune “In Our Circles” by Guineafowl.

The songs are available to stream through the General Pants website and to purchase at selected online retailers. But this is just the beginning, with the brand putting out its feelers to release plenty more exciting indie tracks. If you want to become a Major Label artist, contact Henry Roberts of Peer Group Media or take your demo to any General Pants store.

I’m Back!

Due to circumstances beyond my control, my former blog Oz Music Scene was shut down. And so I’m starting anew here at Sounds of Oz. It’s a little scary navigating the tech side of things now, but I’m getting there.

While the name might have changed, the philosophy remains the same. I simply want to celebrate the fantastic music of Australia in all its forms. That willingness to embrace all genres and sounds is rare in the blogosphere. Personally I think you’ll find just as many gems on commercial radio as underground internet stations. I hope to keep you updated on the artists that matter to you, and to introduce you to some new favourites along the way.

If you were an Oz Music Scene reader, I’m glad you found me again. Your support means a great deal, and I hope you enjoy my new home here. If you’re a first time reader, I hope you like what you see and visit often. To everyone, settle in and enjoy the ride!

Retro House Act Black Box Announce Quickie Aussie Tour

2010 may go down in history as the year of nostalgia tours. Following announcements that Spandau Ballet, Tears for Fears, Huey Lewis and the News, Backstreet Boys, and Whitney Houston are heading our way comes word that Black Box will join them.

I haven’t heard a lot about Black Box in recent years. In fact, I haven’t even given them a passing thought. But promoters are hoping that fans will remember their cover of “Fantasy” and the smash hit “Ride on Time.” If you don’t, here’s the video to refresh your memory.

The venues are small, so this might just be a sell out!

7 March 2010 – Market Hotel, Melbourne
13 March 2010 – Function and Convention Centre, Sydney
14 March 2010 – Workers Club, Revesby
