Bobby Alu Puts Call Out for Ukulele Players

Winter might be coming, but Bobby Alu doesn’t care. He loves making summery tunes all year round, like his latest single “Finally.” He’s even celebrating this reggae-tinged track with a tour in the middle of winter. Well why the hell not?

If you can play ukulele, Bobby would love to have you as a special guest on his upcoming shows. He’s put the call out to ukulele soloists of any age of ability to open up these gigs.

“We want to share the stage with ukulele players around Australia. You don’t have to be an expert, you just have to feel the flow,” he said. If you can feel it, post a video of yourself playing your uke on Instagram and Facebook and tag @bobby_alu, your city, and #FinallyTour. You’ve got until the 18th of May to get your application in, so hop to it!

Even if you can’t play the ukulele, you can enjoy these shows. Check out Bobby on his Finally tour this June!

Fall in Love With Harry Phillips

Prepare to be charmed by Harry Phillips and his brand new single “Unexpected.”

It’s a gentle folky number with poetic lyrics and a stellar vocal performance. Tick, tick, tick. It might be just his second single, but Harry’s already showing real promise as a singer-songwriter. However, we shouldn’t be surprised, as both Harry’s parents are professional songwriters. He wasn’t always going to follow in their footsteps though. He originally had his heart set on a career as a pro athlete, but when an injury put him on the sidelines he realised music was a fantastic way to express himself.

So he’s a good looking dude who’s creating wonderful music, but there’s much more about Brisbane-based Harry you’ll love. Did I mention that he volunteers at an animal shelter and teaches a refugee family from Burma how to speak English pro-bono in his spare time?

An all-round nice guy, Harry will launch “Unexpected” at Brisbane’s Black Bear Lodge on May 16.

Rock Out With Sisters Doll’s New Single, “Black Mirror”

Glam rock might be a dying art, but someone forgot to tell Sisters Doll. They’re exposing a new generation to wailing guitars and punch-your-fist-in-the-air choruses with their latest single “Black Mirror.”

It’s the first song Sisters Doll have released since 2017 and their first track written collectively. If this is what happens when they work together, they need to do it more often!

“I believe everyone is at their most vulnerable when they are looking into the black mirror,” lead vocalist Brennan Mileto explained of the track’s inspiration. “The concept is cool and so true and is a relevant title for our generation,” adds bassist Austin Mileto. “We believe our generation is so reliant on technology, which isn’t a bad thing, but I think if it keep’s going in the direction it is we will all be like zombies in the future. We love technology and social media but just feel it’s taking over the world.”

As with any good glam rockers, Sisters Doll are best experienced live. You’ll get the chance to see them in all their glory at the following shows supporting the release of “Black Mirror.”

Sam Phay Releases Stellar New Single “Hell or High Water” From Debut EP

Melbourne electronic artist Sam Phay shows no sign of fatigue with the release of his third single “Hell or High Water.” What a stunning song. As with his previous releases, Sam wears his heart on his sleeve for this anthemic number which challenges what we think we know about electronic music. It’s given me chills.

“It’s the first track I wrote for the Sam Phay project and kind of paved the way sonically for the rest of the tracks. It’s about committing your whole self to someone,” Sam explained. “I like to think of this track as a moment for the EP where the clouds part and the light starts to poke through a little. It still feels dark and brooding at points but there’s a real genuine positivity to it all. Lyrically it’s very reflective, sincere and I like to characterise it as being the ending of the narrative that’s been established by the previous songs,” tells Phay.

We can look forward to more of Sam’s material when his debut EP Botanical drops soon.

Jacob Lee Poised for World Domination

Gold Coast singer-songwriter Jacob Lee caught my attention last year with his track “With You,” but like so many indie musicians he seemed to fade from view. However, if like me you’ve wondered what happened to him, wonder no more.

It seems Jacob caught the ears of a global audience and he’s kicking major goals abroad. He currently has more than 320,000 YouTube subscribers and his EPs have amassed more than 60 million streams on Spotify. He just headlined his first tour of Europe and the United Kingdom and sold out venues in minutes, inspiring organisers to move him to larger spaces to meet the demand. Best of all, he’s done it all without the support of a major label or mainstream press.

So here’s more raving about Jacob from press on the fringes: his new single “Conscience” is amazing. It’s the first of 11 tracks from the album of the same name Jacob will release this year. He’s playing shows locally all over the country supporting Dennis Lloyd. If you’ve got tickets, don’t just dismiss him as a support act and skip his set, because he’s getting to be quite the big deal and he won’t be playing support slots here for too much longer. After he wraps that up he’ll play North America, followed by some yet-to-be-announced dates in South America, Asia, and the UK and Europe again. Needless to say, the future looks very bright for Jacob Lee.

Conrad Sewell Celebrates “Life” With Art Show, Instores, & Tour

Conrad Sewell has made a career singing tug-at-the-heartstrings ballads that stir the soul. He’s at it again with his latest single “Life,” the title track from his forthcoming debut album.

The album Life hits Australia on May 17. Conrad will mark its release with an art exhibition in Sydney on May 16. Photographers were invited to submit their works which represent the meaning of life. The ones an expert creative panel featuring Conrad himself like best will be displayed on the night. Conrad will also showcase some of the album’s tracks on the night.

While the launch is exclusively for VIPs, Conrad is giving fans plenty of opportunities to see him in the coming weeks. He will play shows all around Australia and North America to celebrate Life’s release. If you missed out on tickets, or you just want to get up close and personal with the man himself, he’s playing a bunch of old-school shopping centre instores leading up to the tour. Stefan Rossi Charts Struggles With New Single, “Long Road”

Adelaide hip hop act Stefan Rossi has teamed up with Elsy Wameyo for his brand new single “Long Road.” I love the way his rhymes interplay with Elsy’s angelic voice on this one. Those lyrics are also so insightful.

“It’s based on those anxious feelings of who I am and how I’m finding myself as I go through emotions of grief, love, my mental health and not rushing through life’s moments to get to your end result,” Stefan explained.

I think we can all take something from that. “Long Road” is streaming on all your favourite digital platforms now.

Fall Fast for Tobi Tobi

Real life couple Tobi Tobi inject some romance into their new single “Ice & Rum.” It floats along with a beautiful delicate daydream quality that really sucks you in. Make sure you really listen to those poetic lyrics. They’re something special. No wonder the original Bachelor Tim Robards handpicked this Melbourne duo to sing when he tied the knot with Anna in Italy last year!

While this is Tobi Tobi’s first single, they come to it with a wealth of experience. Renee Anderson had a deal with Universal when she was younger but left the major label to pursue independent music with Jamie Barlow. Their previous band Private Life garnered plenty of airplay and key support slots for bands including Garbage and Sticky Fingers. Now onto their next adventure, “Ice & Rum” is an exciting sign of what’s to come.

Turn Milo Viti’s New Single Up Loud!

Sydney five-piece Milo Viti are giving me serious nostalgic vibes with their high-energy new pop-punk single “Be Cool.” It reminds me a whole lot of something a ‘90s act like Jimmy Eat World, Lit, or Simple Plan might have released back in the day. And I’m totally here for that.

“‘Be Cool’ is about enjoying the extreme highs of having a good time in spite of the major come down that follows,” the band explained. “It’s about understanding the bad that comes with the good and choosing to forget about it all for a moment before it inevitably catches up with you.”

And what could be cooler than that? Keep your ears to the ground Sydneysiders because Milo Viti regularly plays local gigs. Hopefully it won’t be too long before they take their music all around the country.

Jackson Carroll Wows Me With “Holy Hell”

Some artists have voices that stop you in your tracks. From the moment you hear them you know, you just know, they’re special. Jackson Carroll has one of those voices.

It’s showcased beautifully in his new single “Holy Hell.” It’s hard to believe this haunting track is actually his debut, because it sounds so accomplished. It’s polished yet raw, emotional yet just restrained enough. I can’t help thinking of the late great Jeff Buckley as I listen to it. It’s more than just that falsetto, which is flawless by the way. It’s something about the connection Jackson forges with the listener, despite seemingly being in his own world.

“It never really feels finished until you’re hearing [it] in a studio or with a band, with all the instruments in. I have an idea of what I want it to sound like, or some references I can point at and show to people and say, ‘I want it to sound like this,’” he explained. “It’s tricky to temper expectations when you’re comparing your stuff to stuff that already exists, but we did a good job of it!”

This song has me excited. I can’t wait to hear more from Jackson really soon.
