Dan Cribb & The Isolated Get Set for Album Tour

Perth pop-punk trio Dan Cribb & The Isolated are giving us a taste of their high-energy debut album As We Drift Apart with the cracking new single “Let’s Move to New York.” The song sees the band collaborating with Kisschasy frontman Darren Cordeux.

Darren’s not the only star featuring on the album though. Nick Diener of The Swellers met Dan at The Fest in 2012 and they became such firm friends that he’s an honourary member of the band. You can hear his bass lines and vocals on every track on the album, which should provide another reason for punk fans to put their hands in their pocket for this one.

As We Drift Apart hits stores tomorrow, May 15. To celebrate its release, Dan Cribb & The Isolated will play three launch shows around the country.

12 June 2015 – Public Bar, Melbourne
13 June 2015 – Crown & Anchor, Adelaide

Patrick James Soothes us with “California Song”

Hump Day’s a bitch. The stresses of the week are starting to pile up and the weekend seems too far away. What we all need is some relaxing music to take the edge off. That makes Patrick James’ new single “California Song” the perfect soundtrack if you ask me.

It’s got a mellow vibe without being sleepy, as it has me dreaming of road trips abroad. It seems plenty of people like what they hear, because Patrick’s single launch shows are selling fast. Don’t dilly-dally if you want tickets to his gig at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club on June 13 or the Sydney show at Newtown Social Club on June 27.

The Outdoor Type Releases Your Road Trip Soundtrack

It might be the time of year where most of us are hibernating, but I guarantee you’ll feel like taking a road trip when you listen to The Outdoor Type’s debut single “When the Sun Goes Down.”

It’s got such a great cruisy vibe and the sort of chorus that you just can’t resist singing along to. It’s good honest pub rock, the type of stuff that we just don’t hear often enough.

The Outdoor Type will launch “When the Sun Goes Down” with a show at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory on May 21 before heading to Melbourne’s The Toff in Town on May 23.

Melissa Tkautz Back on Music Scene

If you’d asked me which ‘90s pop singer was due for a comeback, the name Melissa Tkautz wouldn’t have entered my head. She had the perfect package, but I thought in 2015 some of her appeal might have faded. Yet Melissa is coming back with a brand new single “Gotta Let You Go.”

This snippet reveals that the single’s hardly a work of lyrical genius, but it is a lot of fun which has always been what her music’s about. She also looks like she’s barely aged a day, which I can’t help but feel envious about.

Hein Cooper Impresses with “The Art of Escape”

Hein Cooper has gotten under my skin with his debut single “The Art of Escape.” It’s a gentle song, a real slow burner but let it creep up on you and you’ll start to appreciate its delicate beauty.

Hein hails from the New South Wales south coast but he recorded the track, and the others on his self-titled EP, on a recent trip to Canada where he played Montreal’s Canadian Music Week.

Something tells me it’s not going to long before the rest of the world discovers this talented troubadour.

Andy Bull Takes on Okenyo

I must admit, the first time I heard Okenyo’s “Just a Story” it didn’t resonate with me. Perhaps she set the bar too high with the previous single “Broken Chest.” Whatever the reason, I just didn’t love it.

However now that Andy Bull’s worked his magic on the track, I feel like I’m hearing it in a brand new way. It’s so much fun. This is what the song always should have sounded like.

Ainslie Wills Wows me with “Hawaii”

When I think of Hawaiian music I think of ukuleles and laidback vibes. So I wasn’t quite prepared for Ainslie Wills’ single “Hawaii” to be quite so powerful. It might not be what I was expecting, but god it’s good. Heartfelt lyrics, powerhouse vocals, and stirring instrumentation all combine for this corker of a track, the second lifted from Ainslie’s Oh the Gold EP.

It won’t be released until late in 2015, but music lovers can get a little sneak peek on Ainslie’s current residency shows at Melbourne’s Gasometer Hotel. She’s playing every Tuesday this month, and I can’t think of a better reason to get yourself out on a school night.

Brother Fox Warm Me Up with “Feeler”

Summer might be far too long away, but I feel like Brother Fox have already got our warm weather soundtrack sorted with their brand new single “Feeler.”

This is such an uplifting, positive track that’s instantly accessible. I love its easy groove and the chorus had me singing along from the first listen. It was produced by Paul Pilsneniks (Powderfinger, Silverchair) at Byron Bay’s Studio 301, and you can really hear its laidback surroundings coming through.

It might not be the right weather for this kind of music, but when it sounds as good as “Feeler” I don’t mind one bit.

Dolly Denko is Doctrin

Multi-talented Melbourne musical force Dolly Denko is giving us our first taste of her new musical project Doctrin with the exquisite single “Take Me,”  released today. This over-achiever serves as vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and writer on the track which was born from an existential crisis, as so many of the best songs are.

“After binge watching The Craft and Charmed and with already a rough idea for what I wanted the music video to be,” she explained. “I thought that a throwback to magic and occult which I grew up with would represent the theme and story of the song.”

Apparently the song wasn’t just influenced by 90s TV and film, but music as well like Hole and Garbage. However, it certainly doesn’t sound like a throwback. More like this please!

Mike Waters Gambles on Musical Career

It’s amazing to think that Mike Waters has spent the last decade working in a corporate job, keeping his musical light hidden under a bushel. He wrote songs in secret in his bedroom, and floored his family members, friends, and colleagues when he showed them exactly what he could do.

His debut single is “Gambling Man” and it’s just incredible. It’s folky and honest and accessible without being boring. It’s such an appropriate song too with its lyrics about diving headfirst into life and taking chances even when the odds seem to be against you.

“Gambling Man” comes from Mike Waters debut EP Life, which will be released independently tomorrow, May 8.
