Big Day Out 2011 Makes First Lineup Announcement

Big Day Out 2011 is shaping up to be a beauty, with the first official line-up announced.

We’ve heard the names of Iggy and The Stooges, Tool, and Grinderman leaked, but it’s great to see them as confirmed starters. No Soundgarden as was previously rumoured, but Rammstein, M.I.A, Deftones, and Primal Scream playing their classic album Screamadelica all made great substitutes.

The local contingent is also strong, with PNAU, Bliss N Eso, John Butler Trio, Angus and Julia Stone, Birds of Tokyo, Operator Please, and Dead Letter Circus amongst the names preparing to make the trek around Oz.

They’ll do it at the following shows around the country. Sydneysiders can get their tickets on October 6, Gold Coast residents on the 7th, and everyone else on the 8th. They’ll go sale from the Big Day Out website at 12:01 am ahead of the 9 am sale through Ticketmaster. Now let’s see whether we get the same system meltdowns as we tend to each year!

This Is Not Art Festival Hits Newcastle

Despite giving Australia The Screaming Jets and Silverchair, Newcastle isn’t really known as much of a cultural capital. The annual This is Not Art Festival looks to change all that, with its annual line up of music, art, creative writing, and free thinking.

From September 30 to October 4, the festival will turn the Steel City into a cultural hub of activity, with The Crack Theatre Festival, National Young Writers Festival, Sound Summit, and WalkARTbout amongst the highlights.

Visit the This is Not Art Festival website regularly to learn all about what’s happening. Checking out the festivities sounds like a great way to spend your Labour Day weekend!

The Living End and Birds of Tokyo Headline Open Arms Festival

If you’re looking for an excuse for a road trip, the Open Arms Festival might be it. The show will hit the Coffs Harbour Showgrounds on Saturday November 20.

An eclectic lineup of Aussie talent will play on the festival’s two stages, including The Living End, Birds of Tokyo, Grafton Primary, Hungary Kids of Hungary, and Behind Crimson Eyes.

Tickets are on sale now through the Open Arms Festival website, Oztix, and a range of local stores.

North Stradbroke Island Hosts Island Vibe Reggae and Roots Festival

If you’re looking for great music and a laidback atmosphere you’ll find it at Island Vibe, the leading reggae, roots, and cultural festival in the South Pacific. The event will take over North Stradbroke Island from October 29 to 31.

2009 was the event’s biggest year, but 2010 is promising to top it with new additions Kiwi hip hop master King Kapisis, festival favourite Mista Savona, Coloured Stone’s Bunna Lawrie, and our own Mr Percival joining already confirmed starters Ladi 6, Groundation, Paula Fuga, and Rhythm Collision Sound and plenty of other top musicians, cabaret artists, and burlesque performances.

There’s still plenty of accommodation available, but I wouldn’t wait too long before sorting it out. Camping spots are available at Amity Point and Dunwich, although Amity is filling up quickly. Regular bus services will take you from either site to the festival. Call Redlands City Council on 1300 551 253 to reserve your campsite, or if you want something a bit more luxurious check out the holiday homes, apartments, and other accommodation options on the Island Vibe website.

Expats Gypsy & The Cat Come Home Again

After wowing crowds last month while supporting The Strokes and Foals and playing their own headline shows, Gypsy & The Cat are making another journey home for a few more gigs.

Their appearances at Parklife will be the big ones, but if you don’t have tickets to the festival dates you’ll have plenty of chance to catch them at their Time to Wander sideshows. Fans are in for a real treat, with the band showcasing songs from their soon to be released debut album Gilgamesh. Is that just the most fantastic album name or what?

Tickets are on sale now from the venues.

Arrested Development and N*E*R*D Headline Pyramid Rock

If you’re looking for something to fill the void left by Homebake, consider a trip to Phillip Island for this year’s Pyramid Rock Festival. It might not be entirely home grown, but this year’s festival is shaping up to be something pretty special with an eclectic line-up of international and local acts.

Overseas talent N*E*R*D, Arrested Development and Chromeo will join big name Aussies including The Temper Trap, supergroup The Basement Birds, reformed rockers Tumbleweed, Xavier Rudd, Gyroscope, and heaps more.

Pyramid Rock will take over Phillip Island from Wednesday December 29 to January 1. I can’t think of a better way to ring in the New Year, can you? Let’s just hope the rain stays away!

To that end, if you were one of the folks let down by last year’s event you’ll be interested to note that organisers are looking to make amends. If you were caught in that mother of all electrical storms, you’ll receive discounted entry and priority tickets to this year’s show. Head to the Pyramid Rock website for more details.

Tickets for Pyramid Rock go on sale from the official website on September 14.

Homebake Festival Scrapped for 2010

The Homebake Festival will be rested this year, but don’t count the event out just yet.

Organisers say they came to the tough decision as this year’s show simply wasn’t shaping up to Homebake standard. They’re now focusing their efforts on the future.

“As we’ve not been able to have the ‘planets align’ to a standard we feel appropriate to the long standing reputation of Australia’s largest ‘locals only’ event, we’d rather focus on a positive future and are instead planning for a unique return version of Homebake Festival to take place during the first week of December 2011,” the press release reads.

With the quality of local acts, it blows my mind that organisers couldn’t field a stellar festival in 2010. At any rate though, I’m glad they’re not throwing in the towel. In the overcrowded festival calendar, I really liked Homebake’s unique homegrown vision, and I hope to see it realised again in 2011.

New On the Pulse Festival Brings Bands to Brisbane Kids

And those festival announcements just keep on coming. On the Pulse is a new kid on the block, but something tells me this youth-oriented event is going to take off in a big way.

It’ll bring 15 unsigned and independent punk, rock, and pop acts to Brisbane on October 23; they’ll play across two stages at the Fortitude Valley PCYC and The Hive. Acts on the bill include up and comers Finabah, Flicks, Burning Brooklyn, Words Versing Verses, and Starting Sunday.

“On The Pulse has been created not only to create a quality festival platform for our younger and growing artists, but also to present an exciting opportunity for young music fans to be introduced to new music and exciting new bands,” said festival promoter Marc Mancini.

Parents can rest easy as this is a completely drug and alcohol free event. Tickets cost $25 and are on sale now through Oztix, Rockinghorse Records, Kill the Music, and Sunflower Music.

Meredith Announces Eclectic Lineup for 20th Year

You know festival season is afoot once those line-up announcements begin to roll in. Today Meredith unveiled an impressive collection of bands for its 20th anniversary.

This is really an eclectic bill with literally something for everybody. I don’t think you’re ever going to find Crowded House on the same bill as American gangsta rappers Clipse, British post punksters The Fall, and US soul outfit Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings. And that’s before we mention Dirty Three, Little Red, Custard, Sally Seltmann, and C.W. Stoneking. And that’s just for starters.

It’s all happening at the Meredith Amphitheatre from December 10 to 12. Sign up for the ticket ballot on the Meredith website to have the best chance at scoring tickets.

Art vs Science, Basement Birds and More to Join Cypress Hill at Coaster

Following the recent announcement that Cypress Hill would headline, the folks at Coaster have announced their first line-up.

Falls Festival 2009 - Day 3

It’s a bill which features plenty of exciting new local acts including Art vs Science, Basement Birds, Bluejuice, and Boy vs Bear. I’m thrilled to see a line-up which doesn’t include so many of the usual festival suspects; hopefully that diversity will be the key to getting folks through the gates.

Coaster will hit Gosford Showgrounds on the New South Wales Central Coast on Saturday September 25. Tickets go on sale to the public on July 1, but if you want to get a jump on the competition join the Coaster mailing list for access to the presale on June 24.
