Gypsy and the Cat Launch Gilgamesh

Aussie ex-pats Gypsy and the Cat will play local shows in Sydney and Melbourne in January to launch their new album Gilgamesh. Sure it’ll have been out for a few months by then, but who cares?

After being released last Friday the album’s happily sitting pretty at number nine on the iTunes album charts, so I’m expecting a solid ARIA debut. It’s earning rave reviews from the critics and enjoying solid airplay on Triple J who’ve made it their album of the week.

Tickets are now on sale for Gypsy and The Cat’s January 13 show at the Oxford Arts Factory and the January 14 gig at Melbourne’s Hi Fi Bar. It’s a great chance to see the band doing their thing if you missed out on Big Day out tickets, or you just want another serve!

Cyndi Lauper Brings Blues Album to Oz

I’m just about jumping out of my skin with the news that Cyndi Lauper is heading back to our shores.

Cyndi’s one of those artists I’ve loved forever, but I’ve never managed to see her live. I’ve always dealt with the lacklustre reception of friends and family, but I’ve finally worn my husband down. He may be going under sufferance, but I know he’s going to have an incredible time.

Cyndi’s heading our way to promote her new album Memphis Blues, a collection of covers of songs from Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and other blues greats. It seems she just can’t wait to bring these bluesy classics to Oz.

“Australia is one of my favorite places and I am looking forward to visiting again in early 2011,” she said in a statement. “We always have a great time when we come to Australia.”

Tickets for the shows go on sale on November 25.

Dubmarine Back in Oz for “Depth of Sound” Tour

Brisbane dub-dancehall act Dubmarine have been making a big impact abroad with appearances at the Amsterdam Roots Festival, Trier Alstadfest in Germany, and the Afro Latio Festival in Belgium. After taking Europe by storm they’re back on home soil to promote their recently released debut album Depth of Sound.

It’s a pretty appropriate title, with the disc showing off the nine-piece band’s bass-driven roots, synth explosions, and lyrical magic from frontman D-Kazman.

After all those international festival appearances, you know that Dubmarine’s live act is going to be red hot. So make sure you catch them at one of the following shows before they’re seduced by more international travel!

Caulfield Tours Debut Album

Sydney alternative punksters Caulfield are taking their debut album Clarity In A Sea Of Confusion on the road with a tour taking in Australia’s east and west. Guitarist Ned Jankovic describes the disc as the “perfect introduction” to this exciting new band.

“It’s about being lost emotionally and mentally and finding ways to get back to where you want to be and mixes all the elements we love,” he explained.

The album features the new single “Bring Sunday,” a moving track about learning to let go of the past and move on from mistakes made.

“It relates to how sometimes you can feel like a stranger even around the people you know best and overcoming this so you can move on with life,” added Jankovic.

Look out for Caulfield when they bring their show to your town!

The Jezabels New “Mace Spray” Video

The latest song to get my blood pumping is “Mace Spray,” the lead single from The Jezabels’ third EP Dark Storm.

The EP name is an appropriate one, not just for all the gloomy grey weather we’ve been experiencing but that delicious moodiness that hangs over this song. Hayley Mary’s vocals are gorgeous, and all the musicians play their part to create a lovely brooding atmosphere.

The Sydney band are currently strutting their stuff in Canada, but they’ll be back soon enough to play a string of shows around the country. It seems I’m not the only one who’s fallen for this indie four-piece as many of the capital city shows have already sold out. If that’s not an excuse for a road trip I don’t know what is!

See them with new Canadian pals Two Hours Traffic at the following shows.

Brooke Fraser Announces Aussie Tour

Brooke Fraser is all over radio with her new single “Something in the Water,” but the Kiwi-born songstress is keen to show us she’s got many more amazing tunes under her belt. She’ll play shows around the country in January to promote her latest album Flags.

Brooke is currently based in Sydney, but with her spending time in the United States and New Zealand lately I think it’s been far too long since we’ve seen her live. With Flags sitting pretty in the ARIA top 20 there seems no better time to welcome her back to Oz!

Tickets for the following shows will be available from November 5.

22 January 2011 – The Athenaeum Theatre, Melbourne
25 January 2011 – Her Majesty’s Theatre, Adelaide
27 January 2011 – The Tivoli, Fortitude Valley

All Aboard The Good Ship

I don’t hear a lot of music describing itself as porno-pirate-folk-rock, but there couldn’t be a better description for Brisbane act The Good Ship.

Just as naughty as captain Jack Sparrow but not as camp, the band have just released their beautifully bawdy debut Avast! Wretched Sea. The single “These Are a Few of My Favourite Flings” is just a taste of the original opus.

To celebrate the single release, the motley crew will travel up and down the East Coast. If you love pirates, archaic instruments, and a damn good time make sure you catch The Good Ship at one of the following shows.

British India Jet Off for UK Tour

British India have left our shores for a while as they pursue their dreams of global domination.

They’re spending the week in Europe, playing nine shows to support their first UK EP Vanilla. This short play album features four tracks from the monster disc Avalanche. Not sure why the Brits are only getting a snippet; I’d feel a bit ripped off I were them!

Hopefully the Poms will develop a taste for our garage rock band though, because they’ll be back across the pond for another tour in May. That’s set to be a busy month for them, as they’re also booked in to play MUSEXPO in Los Angeles.

Don’t think British India will forget about their fans back home though. They’re planning to release a new single in the New Year, and they’ll play capital cities and regional centers to support it.

It sounds to me like those British India boys won’t be getting a full night’s sleep any time soon! If you want to catch British India, here are all the shows confirmed thus far!

Mos Def Announces First Headline Tour of Oz

After watching him in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Be Kind Rewind, and The Italian Job I’d almost forgotten that Mos Def was a musician. Thankfully he’s coming to Australia to remind us all of his rapping talents next year.

This will be Mos Def’s first headlining tour Down Under, but the wait should be worth it. He’s out here to support his new album The Ecstatic, which has been nominated for a Grammy Award and named one of the best albums of the last year by Rolling Stone.

Mos Def will appear at Hobart’s Soundscape festival before travelling around the country to play the following solo dates. Tickets for those shows went on sale today.

8 January 2011 – Soundscape Festival, Hobart
9 January 2011 – The Enmore Theatre, Sydney
13 January 2011 – The Tivoli Theatre, Brisbane
14 January 2011 – The Palace Theatre, Melbourne

Lan Party Launch New “Personal Low” Album

If you ask my husband what LAN party is he’d wax lyrical about the good old days of computer gaming, where he’d gather with his pals, play video games, and drink too much Mountain Dew to make it through the night. You’d probably be bored hearing about it; I’m sure you’d much rather know about the Melbourne four-piece also called Lan Party.

“Lan Party is a state of mind, something we’ve built on over the years with various members and eclectic collaborative efforts,” the band explained. “Lan Party is a musical mutt, the amalgam of a lot of different colours, moods and styles. The band has a raw accessible rock side with sporadic outbursts of rhythmic flair and technicality. It’s anti-derivative music with a dynamic and energetic air to it.”

Lan Party have just released their sophomore album Personal Low, which ironically enough marks a bit of a personal high for the band! It features the new single “French Investors,” which is all about partying your way out of a tricky situation. That’s a method I have to try sometime!

Lan Party will take the album on the road next month with launch shows in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. And according to lead vocalist and guitarist Trent Menassa, we should expect the unexpected.

“Anything can happen at a Lan Party show,” said Trent. “The energy is a high pressure cooker, the banter is ridiculous, the costumes are raw but lavish, and I think by the time the band leaves the stage you’ll feel like you’ve listened to a lot of good music.”

You can join in the fun at the following shows.

7 November 2010 – Excelsior Hotel, Surry Hills
20 November 2010 – Evelyn Hotel, Fitzroy
27 November 2010 – Jetty Bar, Glenelg
