Shed Seven Finally Announce Australian Tour

While Britpop bands like Blur and Oasis enjoyed great chart success in Australia during the ‘90s, there was another band gaining a more underground following. Perhaps avoiding the glare of an international spotlight helped Shed Seven, because they’re still together and making fantastic music while the other bands have folded. As one of the last bastions of Britpop, they’re also set to make their long-awaited visit to Australia.

If you have already cottoned on to how great Shed Seven are, you probably snapped up tickets to the shows when they went on sale this morning. If not, you might want to take a listen to their new album Instant Pleasures. It’s the first album they’ve recorded together in 16 years, but it sounds like nothing has changed. Everything clicks here. The album has that classic Britpop feel, yet there’s nothing tired about these songs. Expect that same energy when the York lads touch down next year.

“Playing live in Australia has been right at the top of our bucket list for years” the band said in a statement. “It eluded us in the ‘90s so we are ridiculously excited to finally be coming over to play these shows. We get so many great messages from fans in Australia and can’t wait to finally bring our show over for you … bring your best singing voices! ”

Expect new tracks and plenty of the old hits when Shed Seven visit Australia in April.

Thundamentals Celebrate 10 Years With Decade of the Thundakat Tour

Thundamentals have carved out a reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting and beloved hip hop acts over the last decade. Now to celebrate their tenth anniversary, Thundamentals are looking to take their music to as many fans as they can through their epic regional tour, Decade of the Thundakat.

Thundamentals have made the most of their last ten years, earning ARIA and J Award nominations, headlining their own tours in Australia and Europe and supporting legends like A Tribe Called Quest, Big Boi, and Macklemore, as well as performing at virtually every festival in the country.

“It’s 10 years of releasing records and touring, sure, but it’s so much more than that,” Tuka explained. “It’s family, it’s a platform to contribute to our community, it’s connection to the broader community at large, it’s a wealth of life-changing experiences. Brooke McClymont and Adam Eckersley: Partners in Life and Touring

Brooke MyClymont is taking a little time out from her family band to release music with the man in her life, Adam Eckersley. One of those songs is “Train Wreck,” a track which hopefully doesn’t describe their own relationship! It comes from their self-titled album Adam & Brooke, which will hit stores on February 9.

Brooke McClymont and Adam Eckersley performed a string of acoustic shows in June and July and they enjoyed it so much they’ll do it again next year. The Highway Sky Tour will play capital cities and plenty of regional centres. If they’re not coming to your town, don’t worry. This already extensive tour will get more dates soon! Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit and Deer Tick Touring Australia Together

I like to consider my finger is on the pulse of music, so I’m always pleasantly surprised when I discover a musical act with a wealth of material that hasn’t before hit my radar. I hadn’t heard of Alabama’s Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit until the press release about their tour with Deer Tick hit my inbox, but since then I haven’t been able to stop listening to album number six, The Nashville Sound. Rest assured, when I tire of this one, and I can’t imagine when that will be, I’m delving into the back catalogue.

This is actually Jason Isbell’s fifth time Down Under and Deer Tick’s second, but if like me you were slow to the party you won’t want to miss these shows. Listen to the albums and discover them before you wish that you did!

West Thebarton Drop Bible Camp After Signing Record Deal

Adelaide rockers West Thebarton are the first act signed by Domestic La La, a brand new record label helmed by Violent Soho’s James Tidswell. To celebrate the brand new partnership, West Thebarton have just released their brand new single “Bible Camp.”

This is an absolute corker, with a wild, spontaneous energy and husky, soulful vocals from Reverend Ray.

It sounds fun, but there’s a serious message behind the song recounting the homophobia’s Ray’s mum witnessed spending her uni days in Manila.

“Two of the blokes used the camp as a retreat to meet up, as their extremely Catholic families wouldn’t ever accept them being with each other. Apparently one of their dads wasn’t too happy when he was made aware and had come down there after finding out … My mum, Dora, saw the dad kicking in the head of his son’s lover.”

Thankfully this song has a happier ending!

After wowing crowds with their off-the-hook sets at BigSound, West Thebarton have teamed up with Polish Club for their big Christmas tour. Make sure you arrive early, because you won’t want to miss their set.

Lucas Laufen Heading Home For Summer Tour

After a busy weekend working, I think I might be struggling more than most this Monday. I’m keeping my eyes on the Christmas holidays prize and reminding myself that freelance work will start to dry up soon enough as my business clients break for the festive season. Until then, I just do what I can to get through it. So I don’t need big, bold music to perk me up this Monday morning. I need something more subtle to keep me calm. I’ve found it in the tunes from Lucas Laufen, an Aussie-born folk singer living in Berlin.

Lucas has been making waves abroad, playing more than 80 shows across Europe, so he’ll be in fine form when he returns home for an East Coast tour this summer. He’ll bring us music from his debut full-length album, which he’s currently writing and recording, as well as songs from earlier releases. If delicate, honest folk tunes are what you’re after, you’re going to love Lucas Laufen.

Chronixx Bringing Reggae Tunes to Oz

Saturday is the perfect day for listening to some world-class reggae. You’re feeling on top of the world because the weekend is here, yet you’re not suffering for it as you might be tomorrow! This morning I fell down the Chronixx rabbit hole, intending to simply listen to a couple of tracks to decide whether his tour was worth telling you about but listening to a couple of albums instead! He’s that good.

The Jamaican rapper has impressed the right people, from Jimmy Fallon, who is credited with discovering him on a Jamaican holiday, to musical elite like Lauryn Hill, Nas, and The Stone Roses. And in February, Chronixx will bring his band Zincfence Redemption to Australia for shows in the East Coast capitals.

“I’m so excited to be back performing live in Australia for my fans, where I’ll be performing new tracks from the Chronology record as well as the classics,” Chronixx said. “See you soon!”

See him at the following local venues next year.

21 February 2018 – Metro Theatre, Sydney
22 February 2018 – Corner Hotel, Melbourne
23 February 2018 – The Zoo, Brisbane

German Twins Amistat Making Beautiful Music in Australia

Something so special happens when talented siblings make music together. They seem to understand one another, coming together with rich musicality and on point harmonies. That synchronicity can only be amped up when we’re talking about twins. So I’m thrilled German twin brothers Jan and Josef Prasil, known as Amistat, decided to leave their homeland and settle in Australia.

The pair were born and raised in Germany, but decided to leave the country for Australia, the land of their father’s birth, in 2012 after hearing so many stories about the place.

“When we arrived we were struggling to find work so we picked up some musical instruments and started busking to survive!” Josef said. “Jan really took to the guitar while I sung along. We realised pretty quickly that we had a unique sound and people wanted to listen to us back home and that is how Amistat was formed.”

Amistat’s new single “The Coward” is one of the best folk tracks I’ve heard in some time, an understated yet powerful song about living your most authentic life.
“The Coward is about knowing who you are deep inside but not being able to let it out,” Josef explained. “People are very fast with making assumptions and judging you based on what you look like but little do they know about what’s inside of the person.”

Amistat have just sold out a string of shows in Europe and they’re ready to impress music fans here along the East Coast. See them before they get massive at the following shows.

Shelley Segal Releases Moving New Single “Somebody Like You”

I associate Shelley Segal with quirky, upbeat folky ditties. But she’s showcasing a much darker, more layered sound on her latest single “Somebody Like You.” It’s a real departure for this Melbourne songstress, but I like it!

“Somebody Like You” charts Shelley’s struggles as an 18-year-old forming a relationship with a man outside her Jewish faith. Shelley fought for the relationship and ultimately moved out of home after the tension with her family got so great. While she’s not religious now, she says “I know that many people still experience this tension between their families, traditions and the person they love for various reasons, religion, race, gender, orientation. The truth is, you cannot help or control who you love.”

Shelley is currently based in Los Angeles, but she’ll be back on home soil to play some single launch shows in her home state over the summer.

Rick Price & Jack Jones Announce “California Dreaming” Tour

California Dreaming is one of my favourite albums of the year. Bringing together two of the country’s most superb voices, Rick Price and Jack Jones, for some of the best songs ever written was pure genius. So I was thrilled to hear they’ll bring the album to venues around the country next year. Sure I’ve already bought tickets to eight 2018 gigs already, but why not?

“We have been blown away by the reaction to the album and how these songs and our take on them, have resonated with the public,” Rick said. “It’s an amazing opportunity to showcase them on a big stage, with a phenomenal band, in such a vast spread of locations.”

“Rick and I have been talking about doing something for close to two decades,” Jack added. “It was a great opportunity to work together and celebrate great artists, some great songs and a certain time and genre. That period in music will never be repeated again. And now we get to play them live!”

Tickets go on sale at midday on Friday, November 10.
