Insomnia Inspires Anna O

If you love strong female voices like Kimbra and Lorde, you’re going to want to hear Anna O, a bold new talent from Perth. She’s matched her strong vocals with relatable lyrics in her ode to insomnia, “Sleeplessness.”

“The chorus explores the idea of the ‘choir’ of mind chatter, basically touching on how crazy it is to think about all the people laying awake with their mind going crazy, and what we’d all sound like together,” she explained.

“Sleeplessness” is the first track lifted from Anna’s debut EP, When the Winter Came, which will hit stores on March 21. We’ll all have a day to get familiar with it before she launches it for her hometown fans at North Perth’s Four5Nine Bar on March 22. It should be a night to remember, as Anna is itching to take the stage.

“I can’t wait to get out of the studio and start playing my songs to people.  I’ve got a DJ opening for me and I’m pumped to make it a slamming party,” she enthused.

Tickets for Anna’s launch are available now through Oztix.

Twelve Foot Ninja Set Crowdfunding Record with New Clip

Melbourne band Twelve Foot Ninja made crowdfunding history recently when they raised more than $45,000 to make their new music video, more than anyone else attempting to make a music video or short film. They’ve put the money to good use with the new clip for their song “Ain’t That a Bitch.”

Now, this video is not for the squeamish, or for workplaces. It’s downright gory, but you can see where the money went in this visual tale of retribution against an internet troll. I have no idea how much it costs to hire one of the makeup artists who worked on The Hobbit, a 7ft Alaskan brown bear, or a Penthouse Pet, but I guess they aren’t cheap!

So hold on to your stomachs. I’ll bet the fans who made this music video happen would want as many people to see it as possible!

Monicans Bring Back Summer with Debut Single

I am relishing all of this grey, stormy weather. You can keep your hot, humid summer days; they’re just not for me. What is though is “Go Away,” the sun-drenched debut single from Perth act Monicans.

Listening to it feels a little odd during such drab weather, but there’s something so irresistible about its big surf-rock chords. Has it put you in the mood for sun and surf?

Sam Buckingham Tours “Shackles”

Aussie folk songstress Sam Buckingham spends most of her time in the United States these days, so opportunities to see her play are few and far between. But she’ll play her first, and possibly her last Australian shows for 2014 when she promotes her single “Shackles” this month.

Fans of this blog might remember watching Sam playing the song with Buffalo Tales last October. Now the song’s got an official release and a gorgeous black and white video to match. Following this tour, Sam will head back to New York to get back to collaborating with some of America’s top producers and songwriters. Who knows when we’ll see this bright talent again, so catch her live while you’ve got the chance!

The Preatures Release Latest Single & Take on the World

Following up “Is This How you Feel?” was always going to be a big ask for The Preatures. That song was just so good. But I think they’ve made a good effort with their latest release “Better Than It Ever Could Be.”

This song’s got great energy and infectious hooks. I’m not sure if I like it quite as much as “Is This How You Feel?” but if you ask me again, after I’ve heard it as many times as that song, I might answer differently. Following up a track that’s done so well is always tough, and I think The Preatures have done a great job. It certainly sends the message that this band is no one-hit wonder.

They’ll cement their reputation as one of Australia’s hottest new acts with the following shows in Europe and the United States. If you’re living abroad, make sure you don’t miss them!

Calling All Cars Releases “Standing in the Ocean” Clip

Calling All Cars have released a hot new video for their new single “Standing in the Ocean,” ahead of the release of their brand new album Raise the People. I think this energetic number might be my favourite Calling All Cars song yet, and the sexy video capturing a blossoming love affair matches it perfectly.

Bassist Adam Montgomery said handing creative control to Melbourne director Timothy Melville was “amazing.”

“Every previous video we’ve made, we have been the ones calling the shots, from the original idea to the filming and to sitting in with the editor. Basically we are control freaks, but this time around we relinquished all (most) control and left it in the hands of our amazing director Tim Melville. We had a couple of meetings and were on the same page from the start. Tim’s original vision is basically what you see is the video. He really nailed the mood of the song.”

This video should generate a bit more buzz about the band before their latest album hits stores on March 7. To celebrate that release, they’ll play a stack of shows all around the country.

No Second Single Syndrome for Bree de Rome

What do you get if you cross sixties soul with country vibes? “I Expected More” the stellar second single from Bree de Rome’s debut EP Bag of Bones.

I remember enjoying Bree’s spirit with her first single “Better Luck,” but feeling her songwriting skills needed work. So it’s great to see her honing her craft with this number co-written by the incomparable Sally Seltmann. If Bree keeps learning from such talented industry folks, the sky’s the limit for this endearing songstress.
