Perth soul singer Charlie-Moon Meader lays his heart bare with his brand new single “I Wanna Go Home.” There’s so much longing in this cool track. I love the way Charlie-Moon’s rich, warm voice sits in that deep R’n’B groove.
If you’re flipping out over this song as much as I am, you’ll be thrilled to hear there’s more on the way. “I Wanna Go Home” is our first taste of Charlie-Moon’s forthcoming EP.

Getting moving in the morning is always a challenge, but Melbourne’s Pretty Bleak are here to make the task a bit easier. Their latest single “Jawline” has the shimmery pop synths and singalong chorus you need to get fired up.
This song sounds so slick it’s hard to believe it’s the band’s first release. It’s a little poppy, a little punky, a little dancy, and a whole lot of cool.
“The song is about finding a personal balance between vanity and pragmatism. Being able to utilise hedonism and direct it towards something beneficial, rather than frivolous or trivial,” explained lead singer Sam Thomas. “I wrote and recorded two and a half different demos of this song before I finally got it to a place where I was happy with the blend of interesting pop conventions, and more self-indulgent abstract sounds and compositions. The intention of it was to try and write something that could be seen as a more straight-forward kind of mainstream single, without compromising the more unique aspects of the sound.”
Pretty Bleak will launch the single for hometown fans at Grace Darling Hotel on November 15.

Sibling duo JANEY hit all the right notes with their latest single “Hurts Me Like Hell.” It’s got a beautiful lush synth-pop sound and some angelic vocals from Sarah Otto. Then you’ve got those lyrics, which so eloquently explore the idea of moving forward in life, even if it hurts the ones you care about.
“The song was birthed from a moment of disconnect with a family member of ours,” explained Sarah’s bro Billy. “It’s incredible how much body language can tell so much about how a person feels about you, not to mention when you’re a hypersensitive melancholy artist.”
The last time JANEY played a show it sold out. Hopefully it’s not too long before they’re back on stages for us!

Of course, that minute and a half is a bit of a tease, so I’ve posted the full track too. “Motionless” seems super-chilled and breezy on the surface, but tap into those lyrics and you’ll hear their dark undercurrent. The song reflects on the darker corners of our mind and embracing all parts of ourselves, including the turmoil and struggle.
Jeffe spends most of her time in the UK now, but she’s got one more show for the Listen Out Festival, the Sydney date on Saturday, before she jets back. If you’ve got Listen Out tickets, make sure you don’t miss her set!

I love a great cover. They started to get a bad wrap around the height of the reality TV singing contest craze, but I think it takes real skill to interpret a song everybody knows and put your own stamp on it. Matt Joe Gow’s take on Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” is the latest cover to delight my ears.
It’s more subtle and sultry than Kate’s version, with a great Americana feel that really brings out the emotion behind the lyrics. If you want to hear it and his fantastic originals live, make sure you catch Matt Joe Gow at one of his upcoming performances.

Kiwi-born, Melbourne-based artist Lakyn shows tremendous growth with the release of his new single “Choir Boy,” his first new music since releasing his EP “& Pains” last year. It’s an introspective track, interesting sonically but with some really powerful lyrics front and centre.
“Choir Boy’ is about timing and being at peace with where you’re at. It’s about knowing that wherever you are with your expectations, it’s important to remind yourself that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.” Lakyn explained.
You might have seen Lakyn supporting acts like Vera Blue, LAUV, and Eves Karydas. However, in November he’ll take top billing with his own headlining shows celebrating the single’s release. Catch him at the following venues.

Watching Dami Im perform her new single “Crying Underwater” before its release was one of the highlights of her recent Wyong show. She was clearly so proud of this introspective number and thrilled by our rapturous response. The song was co-written with Michael Tan, but Dami wrote most of it at home on the piano. It’s been given some modern production in the studio, but at its heart it really is a classic, confessional piano ballad.
“There is so much pressure in today’s society to always look happy so we end up feeling like we’re not allowed to talk about how we really feel. Just like you’re crying underwater where no one can see you crying,” Dami explained.
Dami still has plenty of shows left before she wraps up her Dreamer tour. Catch her singing this song and all your favourites at the following venues.

Aussie expats Geowulf have just dropped their charming new single “Lonely.” The coming-of-age track about knowing your worth gives us a sweet taste of their forthcoming album My Resignation, which drops on October 25.
“In a way, ‘Lonely’ epitomises a lot of what this album means to me” explained vocalist Star Kendrick. “A bold and welcomed acceptance of myself and my own company. Feeling less and less like I need the approval of others. That’s one of the many nice things about getting a bit older.”
Geowulf are kicking major goals overseas. Hopefully we see them back on our shores really soon, but before that they’ve got some shows in North America and the United Kingdom in the coming months.

Sydney dream pop duo EGOISM continue their winnings ways with the release of “What Are We Doing?” The song is brand new but it’s already zoomed to number two on Hype Machine’s 10 most-posted artists chart and gained airplay on Triple J. With its poignant lyrics and epic chorus, it’s not hard to see why it’s receiving so much love.
“This song is literally about making music with each other; but really it’s about letting out all the little worries you keep to yourself, and then taking a deep breath and realising ‘you and I, we don’t know what the fuck that we’re doing with this’. It can apply to our entire relationship, and to any relationship between two people really,” explained one half of the super-duo, Olive Rush.
Fresh from acclaimed appearances at BigSound, EGOISM will play some hometown shows this month. Catch Olive and Scout Eastment supporting Girlpool at the Lansdowne Hotel on September 15 or at Step Aside at the Roundhouse on September 26.
