Du0 Drops Hot New Single, “Summer Nights”

The season might be almost over, but DuO doesn’t think it’s too late for one more summer banger. The Meeanjin/Brisbane electronic artist has just dropped his new single “Summer Nights” and it’s an absolute scorcher. Just when you think it can’t get any better, that sax line drops. Exquisite!

“Written in a hot Australian summer, ‘Summer Nights’ started on a back deck with a guitar and from there was produced with chill and uplifting synth and sax parts,” DuO recalled. “Lyrically it’s a nostalgic take on love when summer’s balmy nights seemed endless and you could live in the moment while the future seemed so far away.”

There’s more new music where this came from. Expect to hear an announcement about Du0’s next EP in the coming month.

Gretta Ziller Drops Fun New Single “Ain’t Even Your Lover”

Gretta Ziller has me grooving to her upbeat new diss track, “Ain’t Even Your Lover.” If you’re strutting away from the wrong relationship, this song is your new anthem.

“It’s a song about giving your time and emotion to someone. And that someone being a leech – just sucking and sucking and taking and taking – and it not being a real human relationship, where it’s give and take,” Gretta said. “It’s a little bit sarcastic and a little bit sassy, like, ‘I’ve done everything and I didn’t even get sex out of it!’ It is also about being hurt by that person and the things you learn along the way. The most frustrating thing about that whole adventure was the way I let myself be treated; I rolled over, and I was so disappointed in myself for letting that happen!”

“Ain’t Even Your Lover” came out of a weekly songwriting club Gretta joined in 2020, which challenged her to write a song every week. So something good did come out of those lockdowns! Hopefully we hear a few more of those gems really soon. Gretta will play the following shows in the coming months:

4 & 5 March 2023 – Country by the Bay, Bunurong Country/Frankston
9 March 2023 – The Gov, Tarntanya/Adelaide (supporting Ian Moss and Troy Cassar-Daley)
9-11 June 2023 – Let’s Wing It Festival, Geawegal Country/Scone

One of One Expands, Offers Public Tickets for First Time

For years One of One events have looked to empower women and gender non-conforming members of the music industry, but since they were invite-only many people missed out. Organisers are doing things a little differently this year, opening up public tickets to these exciting events in Melbourne and Sydney.

This year’s tour of breakfast events kicks off on International Women’s Day in Meeanjin/Brisbane. This is the first time One of One has visited the city.

“The music industry in Meeanjin is thriving now, more than ever before. It’s home to so many amazing women and non-binary folk and we cannot wait to get them all together in one room to chat, celebrate and watch some very talented speakers and performers,” the local One of One team said. “We’re honoured to welcome the One of One team to Meeanjin/Brisbane and delighted to be teaming up with them to launch our first One of One – International Women’s Day event. We’ve enviously watched the One of One events take place in other cities and leapt at the chance to work with their incredible team.”

While the Brisbane, Darwin, and Adelaide events remain invite-only, tickets for Melbourne and Sydney go on sale on February 27. You can sign up for updates at the One of One website.

The Regime Drop Funktastic New Single, “Be a Lover”

Eora/Sydney funk collective The Regime are bringing a little soul to your day with their fabulous new single “Be a Lover.” This song is super smooth, with a deep groove you just can’t help moving to. Taking cues from classic acts like Sam Cooke, George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, and D’Angelo, this goes down really easy.

“’Be A Lover’ is a soulful ode to funky liberation,” The Regime explained. “The song is about ‘what it feels like to dance away all of your constrictions’. Inspired by the indigenous Jesus Christ, Mother Mary full of funk, and the omnipresence of our non-binary creator aka The greatest Mac of all, also known as the big ‘G’.”

Amen!

This is set to be a massive year for The Regime, who plan on releasing not one but two full-length albums. It’s time to get on board the love train!

Carla Webhe Enchants With “knight To e5”

Eora/Sydney singer-songwriter Carla Wehbe has floored me with her new single “knight To e5.” It’s an emotional slow burner that builds so beautifully to a powerful crescendo. I really felt this one. This is how you get people excited about your upcoming EP.

“If you’re a Harry Potter fan you might get the title reference from the first film. In the same way Ron sacrifices his knight so Harry could win the game of wizards chess, the concept of ‘Knight To E5’ is about sacrificing your happiness or self for the happiness of someone you care about, essentially putting them before you,” Carla explained. “It’s one of the more heartbreaking songs I’ve written, which touches on deep regret and the fear of not living your life for yourself because you’re trying to protect someone else’s happiness.”

As I mentioned, Carla has a new EP on the way. Listen out for Jupiter and Mars when it drops on March 24.

Have a Good Day Start Strong With Debut Single “Somebody, Nobody”

Starting with a bright, ‘80s shimmer, “Somebody, Nobody,” the new single from Have a Good Day, instantly makes you feel good. It doesn’t let up either, with a lush layered chorus and playful beat. If your day needs a lift, this new indie-pop act from Boorloo/Perth have you covered.

This song might be the first release from Have a Good Day, but these guys have been building a reputation in WA after their previous acts shared stages with the likes of Siobhan Cotchin, Dulcie, The Presets, San Cisco, and heaps more. After hearing this song, it seems like they’ve now found something special with this brand new musical project.

MOONWOOD’s New Single “Lady in Red” Will Make Your Day Better

Is there anything more romantic than someone rearranging their plans to take a chance on someone special? I think not! Jake McCullough, the frontman of Eora/Sydney band MOONWOOD, shares the story of the time he took a chance on love in the band’s latest single “Lady in Red.”

“A few years ago, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to work in Los Angeles. Minutes before booking my flight and telling my boss I was leaving to pursue my dream I received a text message from a girl (the Lady in Red) asking if I was leaving. In recent weeks, I developed feelings for her despite being friends for years. I wasn’t sure if she felt the same way. As far as I was concerned, I did not think I had any chance, as I only had a short timeframe to grab this opportunity in Los Angeles. Instead of flying, I decided to pursue a girl who might turn me down. The move was risky, but it was worth pursuing,” he explained.

The song is pure joy, as is the lyric music video which sees Jake dancing in the middle of a street. The things we do for love, hey?

MOONWOOD have a couple of gigs coming up, including their big hometown single launch, so get on it!

EDIE Channels ’90s Sounds With “Front Row”

Western Australian singer-songwriter EDIE is taking me right back to the ‘90s with her new song “Front Row.” A grungy sound reminiscent of icons like Juliana Hatfield or Liz Phair, check. Lyrics exploring unrequited love that borders on obsession, check. We’ve all been there, right?

“Through the track ‘Front Row,’ I explore themes of fixation, love, and obsession. The song shines a light on the dynamic of a parasocial relationship and its all-encompassing nature,” EDIE explained. “The track conveys the power of the mind to create a fully realized fantasy relationship about an individual who is not even aware of your existence. From personal experience, I know this can happen to the best of us!”

The music video plays on EDIE’s ‘90s film influences, capturing the relationship between a front-row fan, played by EDIE, and the lead singer of a band.

“When I was a kid, I always enjoyed creating music videos with my best friend. We spent so much time planning and creating and so to be able to create and experience a music video is a childhood dream come true!” she gushed. “It was so incredibly fun and such a rewarding experience to see my vision and dream come to life. When I met my director Steph [Senior] it was a true meeting of like minds as we had a shared vision of how to capture the story within the song.”

This is such a cool track, I can’t wait to hear what comes next for EDIE.

Sting @ Bimbadgen Estate, Hunter Valley – 18 February 2023

By now you might realise that this won’t be a standard concert review. However, while Saturday’s Sting concert wasn’t what any of us wanted and expected, we still received an afternoon filled with great music so I decided it was important to write about what I did experience.

When you buy tickets to an outdoor show, you never know quite what you’re going to get. The weather in late summer can be fickle. While I was in pants earlier in the week, the mercury hovered somewhere around 40 degrees in the Hunter Valley on Saturday. Shout-out to my dad, the real MVP, who drove Mum and I to the Hunter for a nice lunch, then some wine-tasting in air-conditioned cellars until the show was nearly about to begin. With our AAMI Lucky Club membership we were ushered through our special line without queuing and quickly found our seats. No lines at the exclusive AAMI Lucky Club bar either. No, this isn’t a paid promotion, but those perks make sticking with my insurance provider so worthwhile. Mum told me the seats were much better than they were last time she saw Sting, even though we didn’t splurge on close to the top tier.

I didn’t have high expectations for Joe Sumner, assuming he just got the gig because his dad was the headliner, but I really enjoyed his set. He reminded me a lot of his father vocally, although his top register was a little weaker. But he has some really solid pop-rock songs. He’s definitely got the goods as a singer-songwriter, and he’s super charismatic. One of the things I really love about these Day on the Green shows is you can often be pleasantly surprised by an artist who you wouldn’t ordinarily have seen. Rest assured, I’ll be checking out his back catalogue.

Unlike Joe, I knew exactly what I was getting with James Reyne. He’s one of Australia’s most dependable musicians, with one of the country’s most impressive back catalogues. When you can throw “Reckless” into the middle of your set, because you know there is plenty more people want to hear, you know you’ve got the goods. He has us all singing along, even if we were probably wrong with most of the words. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen James, but it’s always a thrill.

Sting is another one of those artists who has so many hits that he doesn’t need to save them for an encore. He walked out without fanfare, just a man with his guitar ready to put on a great show. “Message in a Bottle,” bam, “Englishman in New York,” bam, “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic,” bam. Sounding just as good as he ever has, with so much charm. With a triple-treat of hits so early, we didn’t even mind when he apologised for playing a couple of new songs. They were less familiar but still superb songs, and they gave us all a chance to catch our breath and take our seats for a bit. We were back to the hits for “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You,” a song made a bit more pleasant as the breeze picked up. We had been so hot that the wind was a welcome relief. I was honestly shocked when security ushered Sting off the stage. He said he’d be back if he could, and we were sure he would be. I called my dad, who was already on the way to pick us up, and told him the show might take a little longer as we were on a break waiting for the high winds to pass. He turned around to go home, and almost got there when I called him back to say we were being evacuated. We were a bit shocked really. It wasn’t raining, and I’ve been in some pretty heavy rain for Day on the Green shows, but I guess the wind and forecast lightning was the deciding factor.

I’ve attended countless Day on the Green shows and never had an experience like that. So perhaps it’s not a surprise that I felt the venue staff were ill-prepared for the turn of events. My mum and I were told to leave our seats, but we had no where to go, with my Dad around 50 minutes away. And then the rain started. Another shout-out to the amazing couple who let us take shelter in their car, insisting that they wouldn’t be moving for ages (they were right). Would we have been waiting in the conditions that were deemed too unsafe for a concert if they weren’t willing to help?

Now we’re left wondering what happens next. The team behind A Day on the Green say they’ll be in touch in the next day or so, suggesting there’ll be some kind of compensation. A reschedule seems unlikely given Sting’s busy schedule. Some people online have suggested we don’t deserve any sort of compensation, because we saw all three acts we paid for. However, if you’d asked me to pay $200 to see Sting sing seven songs, I’d have told you where to go. It’s the sort of experience that makes you wonder whether you should buy tickets to the shows at the safe, if somewhat sterile, indoor venues instead of the wineries. So I’m glad to hear A Day on the Green are looking to make up for our disappointment. It certainly wasn’t the show we hoped for, even if there was plenty to smile about early on.

Hugo Stranger and the Rattlers Blow Me Away With “Leaders”

I’ll call it now; you will not hear a better song than Hugo Stranger and the Rattlers’ new single “Leaders” today. Maybe all week. Maybe all year. It’s a dark bluesy, gospel number with so much grit and gravel. You’ve got to listen to this one.

Thom Harrison, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, said he was inspired to write the song after listening to Sacred Roots of the Blues by Bluebird.

“I was driving and a hand clapping bluesy melody came into my head, so I pulled over and recorded what became the intro of the song,” he recalled. “I wanted to take a gospel song and flip the narrative to show a darker side. Lyrically, the song conjures a church sermon detailing how so-called leaders look down on others with judgment.”

Apparently Hugo Stranger and the Rattlers have a big 2023 coming up, so I suggest you follow them on the socials so you learn when they’re snaking through your town.
