“Hold Yourself Together” – Asha Jefferies

I was initially in two minds when I sat down to write this review. I have waxed lyrical about two singles from Asha Jefferies‘ EP before. “Chaos” and “Everybody Talks” were such standout songs, I wondered what I could possibly say about the EP that I hadn’t already said before. Perhaps I’d better just introduce you to the latest brilliant cut, “If You Were My Hero” and be done with it.

However to do that and neglect the EP review felt like ignoring its beauty. Asha Jefferies’ singles are gorgeous. You can certainly appreciate them out of context. But on the EP Hold Yourself Together they create a more complete, more powerful picture. They’re like pages from a diary, stories of moments that together make up a tumultuous period of time. While the singles struck me, they’re no stronger than any of the songs that haven’t garnered radio play.

Asha Jefferies is such a talent, and her debut EP Hold Yourself Together is the perfect showcase of that talent. Her poetic, vulnerable lyrics and distinctive voice that seems to effortlessly slide up and down the scale have continually impressed me. Her songs have a charming folksiness, a catchy pop sensibility, and a heart that’s undeniably compelling. Discover them. All of them.

Hold Yourself Together is out now. Asha will play the following shows to support its release.

8 February 2019 – Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane
9 February 2019 – Byron Bay Brewery, Byron Bay
13 February 2019 – Golden Age Cinema & Bar, Sydney

Daniel Trakell Releases “Wisdom/Boredom” Ahead of Melbourne Residency

Mondays are hard, but Daniel Trakell can help ease you into your working week with his dreamy new single “Wisdom/Boredom.” It’s a beautiful folk ditty recorded in Nashville and produced by Daniel’s regular collaborator and friend Joshua Barber (Gretta Ray, Gotye).

It’s got such a dreamy, organic folky sound, that it’d be easy to let it wash over you without really tapping in to what it has to say. That’d be a shame though, because “Wisdom/Boredom” is an insightful track about the choices we make.

“‘Wisdom/Boredom’ is a song about the life-altering decisions which come with growing older,” Daniel explained. “Choices which can seem mundane at first but change the course of our lives, and tough decisions which we agonise over but end up being of little consequence. Often we can’t realise the quality of our judgement until we look back with the wisdom of hindsight.”

Melbournians are in luck, with Daniel preparing to take up residency at Some Velvet Morning. Starting this week, he’ll play free shows every Thursday night.

Something Good Comes Out of Preston; Introducing Short Shadows

Andy Coates wowed crowds around Melbourne with his party-swing band Frankie Wants Out, but it seems he’s the one ready for something new. Now performing under the moniker Short Shadows, he’s blending genres and providing some witty commentary on suburban life. His lead single “Nothing Good Comes Out of Preston” is the perfect introduction to his music.

If you love Ben Folds and The Whitlams, you’re going to adore this song. The lyrics are on point and the sound so intriguing, with soulful horns, some jazzy keys, and a punk ethos. The song celebrates Short Shadows’ love of Melbourne’s north with its references to Preston Market, the 86 tram, and Cramers.

“Nothing Good Comes Out of Preston” is the lead single from Short Shadows’ EP War Anecdotes From the Northern Suburbs, out February 15. Short Shadows will celebrate its release with a launch show at the Northcote Social Club on February 17.

Get Your Saturday Groove On to “Chalkline”

Sydney multi-instrumentalist A.D.K.O.B. is giving me series retro vibes with his upbeat new single “Chalkline.” While there’s a dark undercurrent to the lyrics, the synth-driven music will have you tapping your toes from the get go.

“It’s a song about what it means to learn from mistakes, or perhaps that sometimes you don’t learn at all,” explained Mark Piccles, the creative force behind A.D.K.O.B.

“Chalkline” is the first single lifted from A.D.K.O.B.’s sophomore EP Nothing is a Waste of Time. If the single is any indication, it sees him take production out of the bedroom. This single sounds totally slick, without losing heart. The EP should drop later this year. Before that, A.D.K.O.B. will play the following shows to launch the banging new single “Chalkline.” All shows are totally free, so there’s no excuse to miss them!

6 March 2019 – Brunswick Festival, Howler, Melbourne
10 March 2019 – North Wollongong Hotel, Wollongong
15 March 2019 – Vic on the Park, Sydney

John Butler Trio’s New Single Another Reason to Catch Live Show

The hits keep coming from John Butler Trio’s critically acclaimed new album Home. I don’t mean hits in a commercial sense, because for some reason the singles aren’t climbing the charts any more, but hit in terms of hitting the target. With a fantastic sound and heartfelt lyrics and vocals, single number three “Miss Your Love” is another fantastic folk-rock number from one of the country’s most enduring acts.

“Certain relationship themes solidified into songs over the course of time” John Butler explained, “the boy walking around in the man’s body seemed to be the recurring archetype that I had been unpacking and exploring and ‘Miss Your Love’ was my way of processing my own journey.”

Last year with a big one for John Butler Trio, who sold out shows around the United States and Europe. But they were just warm ups. After Home hit the top spot on the ARIA charts last year, the current Aussie gigs really are the main event. There are just a handful of tickets left for the remaining dates, so if you want them stop procrastinating! Otherwise you just might miss out!

X Factor Star Big T Releases First Single “Paradise”

Cyrus might have taken out the X Factor Australia title in 2015, but Big T was a clear crowd favourite. Despite no formal training, the lovable railway worker reached the top four and won the hearts of the nation.

Since his reality TV stint, Big T has been honing his craft with support slots for Chris Isaak, Dragon, and Pete Murray, along with performances at high-profile events like Carols in the Domain, the NRL Auckland Nines, the Bledisloe Cup series, and Telethon 7. It’s been a long time coming, but his recently released debut single “Paradise” is worth the wait.

This is such a feel-good summery track with all the soul Aussies warmed to when they first heard Big T’s music. Produced and co-written with The Banton Brothers, I think Big T is sounding better than ever on this. Have a listen and fall for the charms of Big T all over again.

Phil Collins @ QUDOS Bank Arena, Sydney – 22 January 2019

I get very critical when I hear musicians referred to as legends. Most media outlets seem to love this buzzword, using it to refer to all the hottest acts, but in my mind becoming a legend takes time. It takes a consistent body of work. Most people never get there, regardless of how many songs or albums they release. We have very few musical legends left, but Phil Collins is undoubtedly one of them.

His musical legacy speaks for itself. There’s the impressive body of work with Genesis, a solo career that if anything surpassed that. There’s been number ones, Grammys, American Music Awards, Brit Awards, even an Oscar and some Golden Globes. It’s no coincidence that at 67 he can still sell out our largest music venues.

I’ve seen several artists who start showing their age. Physically, Phil is among them. His dodgy hip and back mean he spends most of his show seated. But where it counts, vocally, age hasn’t touched his performance. His voice rang out clear as a bell, sounding just as strong as it ever did on the recordings.

That voice delivered a set list that might end up being the best I hear all year. I leaned over to my mum after he started with “Against All Odds” and said “Well there’s my favourite. Where does he go from here?” But of course, Phil has so much in his arsenal that he can keep you entertained even when he’s already delivered the song you wanted to hear most. “Another Day in Paradise” came next, “I Missed Again” … hit after hit. He doesn’t need to keep any up his sleeve for the back end of the show because he’s written so many stellar songs. I remembered just how much I love tracks like “Invisible Touch,” “Something Happened on the Way to Hear,” “Easy Lover,” and “Chances Are.” The atmosphere for “In the Air Tonight” was electric. Phil might not be pounding the drum kit any more, but his son Nic was a worthy replacement.

The whole band really deserves a special mention. Many of these musicians have been with Phil for 40 to 50 years. They knew this music intimately, creating one of the tightest sounds I’ve ever heard. While Phil couldn’t get up and dance they filled that gap too, making the show feel like a real party from start to finish.

When Phil and band said their goodbyes I didn’t expect an encore. I’d heard everything I expected to and then some. It also seemed like an awful lot of effort for Phil to hobble off with his cane only to return again. However, he maintained the rock and roll charade, returning for one more song, “Take Me Home.” So stirring, the perfect closer for a real celebration of music.

Phil Collins was one of those bucket list artists for me, someone I knew I’d see if I ever had the chance but wasn’t sure I would. At one point the world thought he’d never tour again after all. When you anticipate seeing someone for so long, it can be difficult for the artist to meet your expectations. But Phil did and more. I feel so privileged to have spent time with one of the world’s true musical legends.

Phil Collins plays Perth’s RAC Arena tonight before heading to Melbourne’s AAMI Park on February 1 and 2.

Yours Truly Releasing Killer New Music Ahead of Download UK

Yours Truly are your new favourite pop punk band. The Sydneysiders are poised for big things after being added to the bill of the United Kingdom’s Download Festival. Before playing that monster mid-year event, they’ll release their latest EP Afterglow on April 12. It features the current single “Circles,” a female power anthem that will have your hairbrush doubling as a microphone in no time.

These guys have been quietly working at their craft since forming in 2016, “a time when there were a lot of Australian bands getting their international breaks, and we were looking to them for motivation,” explained lead vocalist Mikaila. “Seeing bands you’ve seen in smaller venues have that success was inspiring.”

If this song is any indication, Yours Truly are bound to blow up and get that international success they’ve worked so hard for.

Magnus Murphy Wants You To “Feel Something”

It might be early on a Friday morning, but Brisbane pop act Magnus Murphy has me anticipating the weekend with his new banger “Feel Something.” It’s a real toe-tapper backed by some poignant lyrics about making a connection in the digital age.

“A lot of our generation are all on dating apps with so many options and more opportunity to meet so many people yet not many people really know what they want,” Magnus explained.

Magnus is set for big things, booking shows in Europe and America from March to June. He’ll warm up with a hometown show at the Milk Factory Bar on February 8.
