Harts Does It Again With “Power”

Harts shows he just can’t put a foot wrong with the release of his latest single “Power.” This is another killer cut from the Aussie youngster, with dirty guitar chords, velvety vocals, and a serious funk sensibility.

I’ve gushed about what this guy is doing so much that I’m starting to sound like a broken record. But he’s just that good. The rest of the world is starting to pay attention too, after critically acclaimed performances at the Pink Pop Festival in Netherlands, shows in the United Kingdom and Europe, homegrown events like Groovin’ the Moo, Falls Festival, and Splendour in the Grass.

Seriously, just listen. He’s amazing.

Matt Corby, Peking Duk Headline Maroochy Music and Visual Arts Festival

The highlight of the Sunshine Coast’s cultural calendar, the Maroochy Music and Visual Arts Festival, is fast approaching. Now in its second year, the event has attracted an impressive line-up, with Matt Corby, Peking Duk, Allday, George Maple, Ngaiire, Boo Seeka, Vera Blue, and heaps more all set to entertain crowds.

In addition, an array of local visual artists will create works on the day. The latest work in Amanda Parer’s acclaimed “Fantastic Planet” series will also make its debut before travelling all around the globe.

The Maroochy Music and Visual Arts Festival hits the old Horton Park Golf Course on Saturday September 10. Tickets are on sale now from the festival’s website.

My Echo Thinks of Life When We’re “Old and Grey”

My Echo is getting nostalgic with the release of the new single “Old and Grey,” which gets an official release today. The track speaks of old friendships that have been through hardships and come out the other side stronger than ever.

To celebrate the release, My Echo will head out on a quick tour of select capital cities. Fans can look forward to hearing “Old and Grey” and other songs from the Melbourne band’s forthcoming debut album Brothers at the following shows.

Lazy Colts Wow Me With “Twenty Two”

I’ve fallen hard for “Twenty Two,” the latest single by Sydney’s Lazy Colts.

This is one of those very introverted, special songs. The vocals aren’t big, the melody won’t get stuck in your head, but it’s a track with something to say. Take the time to really listen and I’m sure you’ll be captivated too. The gritty, honest video is just so striking too.

“Twenty Two” comes from Lazy Colts’ debut album Trojan, which will drop on August 5. The following day Lazy Colts will embark on a tour to promote its release.

“Beneath the Surface” – December Baby

When I hit play on Beneath the Surface, the debut EP from December Baby, I was instantly struck by her beautiful, delicate voice. However, as I listened closely to this five-track collection I found so much more to appreciate.

December Baby’s music is folky with an accessible pop sensibility. Think Aimee Mann, Sarah Bareilles, and Feist, all artists that December Baby proudly cites as influences. But she’s got her own stories to tell, and she tells them beautifully through these songs.

The opener “You’re My Rock” is impossible to dislike, an upbeat declaration of love. It doesn’t break any new ground, but it’s a lot of fun. I felt the longing in “If You’d Only,” a sweet song about promising the earth to an object of affection. “Jimmy Choos,” with its bitey lyrics savaging “mean, shallow girls,” is the standout for me. I love the way December Baby’s sweet vocals and the upbeat melody juxtapose with the cutting words. There’s a dramatic flair in “This Way” that really appeals to me. “Not Okay” is beautiful in its honesty. It’s probably the most ambitious track on the EP, with blues passages, poppier moments, and stripped back movements all sitting side by side. The transitions aren’t always seamless, but its fearlessness makes a strong statement at the end of this EP.

On a casual listen, December Baby’s music is poppy and pleasant. However, tune into the lyrics and as the EP’s name suggests, there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface.

Beneath the Surface is released today and available from iTunes. December Baby will announce concerts to celebrate the EP’s release soon.

Ali E Releases Stunning New Single, “Two By One”



Melbourne-based songbird Ali E’s new single “Two By One” is one of the most intriguing songs I’ve heard in some time. It feels like it could come from the soundtrack of a western film. There’s a bluesy quality to it and a real sense of theatre. I love the way Ali’s gorgeous voice interplays with the string section. It’s so different, the kind of song that could never simply become background music.

Ali E is currently touring the country with the Up Your Guts tour, along acts including Scotdrakula, Scott and Charlene’s Wedding, Ben Wright Smith. Here are the remaining dates for that regional tour.

The Veronicas Headlining Royal Flying Doctor Service Fundraiser, Altitude

If you’re wondering how to spend your tax return, consider buying a ticket to this year’s Altitude event. While admission isn’t cheap, this annual fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) of Western Australia could really use your support. Your ticket doesn’t just buy you a dose of good karma; you’ll also enjoy performances from some of Australia’s finest female talents.

Sister power pop act The Veronicas are headlining this year’s event, ably supported by local songstress Reigan Derry, who received a rapturous reception at last year’s Altitude, and former Perth resident and musical theatre star Julia Jenkins, who’ll return from London to appear at the event.

“We’re honoured to be performing at Altitude for the Royal Flying Doctor Service this August at Crown Perth,” Jessica and Lisa Origliasso of The Veronicas said in a statement. “The RFDS is an iconic Australian organisation that needs support to maintain its 24/7 lifesaving services. Everyone that buys a ticket is helping support a charity that provides an integral service to the people of Western Australia. We can’t wait to perform for you, Perth. See you in August!”

Admission also includes a three-course dinner, premium beverages, superior service, and a chance to bid on money-can’t-buy items at the event’s charity auction.

The Peeks Blow My Mind With “Wanaka”

“Wanaka,” the second single from Melbourne indie folksters The Peeks, reminds us all just how powerful a voice can be.

The single is an exercise in restraint. The gentle strumming of an acoustic guitar supports Fraser Henry’s voice beautifully. His vocals are so raw and powerful, reminding me a little of David Gray’s. It builds slowly, taking listeners along for the ride. I am completely in love with this song!

“Wanaka” comes from The Peeks’ debut album Grow Up/Grow Down, which has only just been released. The Peeks will launch it for a hometown crowd first before travelling around the country.

“Tribe” – Bearfoot

If summer is but a distant memory and you’re cursing the winter chill, wrap your ears around Tribe, the recently released EP from Sunshine Coast reggae act Bearfoot.

The first track “Could Be Worse” is the ideal introduction to this band, a cruisy cut about looking on the brighter side of life. I couldn’t help but think of Stevie Wonder’s “Master Blaster” when listening to “Impolite.” There’s a shared melodic sensibility there, but the perceptive, socially aware lyrics help ensure this song occupies its own space. “Dreamer,” sees Bearfoot in a more relaxed space. It’s so catchy and laidback, it reminds me of hanging around a beer garden in the middle of summer. I was well and feeling the reggae vibes by the time “One Drop” came on, with its lyrics reminding listeners that “Reggae never hurt anyone.” “Babylon” is the closing track, a smart number which reminds the listener Bearfoot is much more than just a party band.

Bearfoot’s laidback summery vibe is perfect antidote to the chilly winter weather. It’s positive music, with clever rapid-fire vocals and irresistible brassy hook. In a music scene where good reggae acts are a rarity, what they’re doing stands apart. I hadn’t heard of Bearfoot before, but after hearing this EP they’re definitely on my radar.

Applications Wanted for Girls Rock! Brisbane

The rock music scene is a bit of a boys’ club. So it’s exciting to see The Foundry in Brisbane has teamed up with a great non-profit organisation called Girls Rock! Australia for the second ever Girls Rock! Brisbane event.

This music mentorship program looks to help self-identified girls, trans, and gender non-conforming youth aged between 10 and 17 nurture an interest in rock music within a safe space. Over five days participants will form their own bands, learn instruments, participate in creative workshops, write their own songs, and watch live performances.

Girls Rock! Brisbane will be held from Monday September 26 to Friday September 30. On October 1, all involved will get the chance to showcase their new skills with a live performance at The Foundry. Participant applications are due on Monday, August 1, so if you want to be a part of it you’ll need to be quick. Interested adults can also apply to become a volunteer for the event. Girls Rock! Brisbane needs people with a whole range of skills, so check out the application form to see whether you could play a part in this great initiative.
