John Farnham & Lionel Richie @ Tempus Two Winery, Hunter Valley – 8 March 2014

For not the first time this year, I’m wondering where the time’s gone. It seems like only yesterday that I was grooving out to John Farnham and Lionel Richie in the Hunter Valley, yet another weekend is already upon us. So it seems like the perfect time to reflect on this killer double bill.

He wasn’t announced on any of the posters, but the evening actually kicked off with an unassuming singer-songwriter by the name of Joe Moore. Some Googling tell me this Brit-turned-Aussie actually made it to the Australia’s Got Talent finals a few years back, but these days he spends most of his time busking in Pitt Street Mall. Tempus Two provided a much bigger stage than the Sydney shopping strip, and probably more than a guy with an acoustic guitar needs. However, somehow he held those of who showed up early transfixed. So many people around me were buzzing about his talent, wondering why they’d never heard of him before. Personally I preferred to sit silently, taking in the romantic, poetic words he sang in stunning voice which had just the right amount of edge. He reminded me a lot of Howie Day, one of my favourite American singer-songwriters, quiet but assured and capable of really soaring when the songs call for it. He performed two short sets as the seats filled up, and while he wasn’t the reason I came to this gig, I was definitely sorry to see him leave the stage. I’ll be keeping an eye out for his gigs in future.

I adored Joe, but the show definitely kicked up a few notches when John Farnham took to the stage. He’s the consummate professional who just seems to get better with age. His voice continues to be one of the best in the business, and even in his advanced years there’s such energy about the way he performs. The band contains so many familiar faces who I remember seeing as a kid on Hey Hey It’s Saturday. By surrounding himself with these people so familiar with the songs, John ensures his show is one of the tightest around. And those songs, my goodness. I’ve never considered myself a big John Farnham fan. I own a greatest hits album, but that’s about it. Yet his music just seems to seep into the consciousness of every Australian. I found myself singing along to each and every tune. Belting out “You’re The Voice” with the Hunter Valley crowd in full voice was one of the most powerful concert experiences of my life. There’s just something about that song that makes you so proud to be an Aussie.

Since I don’t consider myself a massive John Farnham fan, I guess I’ve outed myself as a Lionel Richie devotee. Yet funnily enough, when he stepped on the stage I was feeling a little deflated. He started with “Just For You,” an upbeat number delivered with plenty of gusto that didn’t really match how any of us felt about the 2004 release. Let’s face it, the noughties were hardly Lionel’s best years. Thankfully he slipped back into the classics quickly with “Easy.” Sitting down at the piano Lionel seemed to have a lot more control over his vocals, however they were hardly on a par with Farnsy’s. I’m not sure Lionel was ever the best vocalist, but hearing him perform so soon after John made him seem a little subpar.
Happily it didn’t take too long for me to shake off my feelings of disappoint. Pretty soon the songs started to shine through, as did Lionel’s showmanship. Early on his particular brand of entertainment felt a little try-hard compared to John’s easy connection to his audience, yet after a few tracks I started giving myself over to the experience. By “Brick House” I was having a ball. By “Dancing on the Ceiling” I was in my element. I barely sat down all set as I sang myself hoarse. It took a little while for me to ease into things, but by the end of the night I was gushing.

Three great acts, so much amazing music. Does it get any better than that?

INXS Score a Month of Number Ones

Way to go INXS! The classic rock outfit continue to reign supreme on the albums charts with their greatest hits album The Best Of, making it four straight weeks at the top spot. Kick’s finally fallen out of the top 10, but clearly a new generation of fans is discovering those hit singles!

They’re keeping company in the top ten with Hillsong United. The church’s latest release, The White Album [Remix Project] has debuted at number nine. Talk about strange bedfellows!

5 Seconds of Summer and Joel Fletcher continue to impress on the singles charts. “She Looks So Perfect” has fallen a few positions this week, but it’s still more than respectable at number seven. It’s a similar story for “Swing,” which has dropped two to sit at number nine.

Dewayne Everettsmith Releases Long-Awaited Solo Album

I can’t say that tourism ads are generally where I go looking for great music, but I found it when Tourism Australia featured Dewayne Everettsmith’s song “It’s Like Love” in their last campaign. I feel head over heels for the tune way back in 2012, and was desperate to hear more. He’ll finally show us what else is in his bag of tricks when he releases his debut album Surrender on March 14.

“When I wrote most of these songs, I was obviously in emotional turmoil – difficult things in my life,” he explained. “The idea was that when someone listens to it, it touches a nerve but they take a positive from it. That was the ultimate aim.”

If that intrigues you, make sure you grab a copy of the album and see Dewayne playing its songs live at a venue near you.

Insomnia Inspires Anna O

If you love strong female voices like Kimbra and Lorde, you’re going to want to hear Anna O, a bold new talent from Perth. She’s matched her strong vocals with relatable lyrics in her ode to insomnia, “Sleeplessness.”

“The chorus explores the idea of the ‘choir’ of mind chatter, basically touching on how crazy it is to think about all the people laying awake with their mind going crazy, and what we’d all sound like together,” she explained.

“Sleeplessness” is the first track lifted from Anna’s debut EP, When the Winter Came, which will hit stores on March 21. We’ll all have a day to get familiar with it before she launches it for her hometown fans at North Perth’s Four5Nine Bar on March 22. It should be a night to remember, as Anna is itching to take the stage.

“I can’t wait to get out of the studio and start playing my songs to people.  I’ve got a DJ opening for me and I’m pumped to make it a slamming party,” she enthused.

Tickets for Anna’s launch are available now through Oztix.

INXS Continue to Rule the Charts

INXS have done it again! For the third week running the classic rock band has claimed the top spot on the ARIA charts with their The Very Best greatest hits album. Their beloved 1987 release Kick is also performing well with a number three finish. That’s pretty impressive considering the miniseries finished up weeks ago. How long with their streak last?

The John Butler Trio have taken a tumble this week. Their latest release Flesh & Blood has fallen five places to finish at number eight.

Our latest boy band 5 Seconds of Summer have zoomed into the charts this week. “She Looks So Perfect” is sitting pretty at number three on debut. Sixteen weeks after its release, “SWING” just won’t quit. Joel Fletcher’s smash is currently sitting at number seven.

Postblue Get Ugly, and I Like It

The fuzzy, unpolished sound of Postblue isn’t the sort of thing I’d normally go for, but there’s something about this meeting of Byron Bay and Melbourne musicians that’s gotten underneath my skin. I couldn’t help thinking of the grunge acts of the ‘90s as I listened to “Ugly,” the latest song lifted from their debut album I Hope They’re Praying For Me.

The album is scheduled to hit stores on March 21, and they’ll celebrate with a string of shows all around the country. Stablemates Luca Brasi will serve as support act for the following dates.

15 March 2014 – Hermann’s Bar, Sydney
16 March 2014 – Beatdisc Records, Parramatta (ALL AGES)

The Vernons Score T-Mobile Ad

Queensland rockers The Vernons have scored a major coup, with their song “Shake n Roll” featuring in the latest advertisements for American mobile phone giant T-Mobile. The 12-month campaign is amazing exposure for the band, who spent 2013 working hard on breaking into the US market.

Just as they’ve got the world wanting to hear more, they’re also hard at work on their sophomore EP, not so originally titled Volume II. That recording, which is expected to drop in July, will see the group working with The Wrecking Crew’s legendary guitarist Louie Shelton.

It sounds like all the stars are aligning for this great Aussie act!
