Jazz in the Vines @ Tyrell’s Winery, Pokolbin – 26 October 2013

After spending so many weekends consumed by moving house and the associated fall-out, it was blissful to head to the Hunter Valley on Saturday for the annual Jazz in the Vines show. It doesn’t really matter who’s on the bill; this is one yearly event I make sure that I never miss. And once again, this stellar regional show didn’t disappoint.

Pokolbin was bathed in the eerie haze of bushfires, but thankfully you couldn’t really smell smoke on the Jazz in the Vines site. In fact, I think we enjoyed the best weather we have had in years. Far too often Mother Nature turns on a scorcher, but this year it was a pleasant 27 degrees with a gentle breeze which made even the dancers down the front feel comfortable.

I wish I could show you pictures of all the fun we had, but sadly my camera decided to give up the ghost the moment I tried to take a snap. Instead you’ll just have to take my word for it. The Admirals Own Big Band and Bob Barnard satisfied the taste of traditional jazz enthusiasts with old standards and instrumental gems. These mellow offerings gave us all a chance to chill out a little with the superb food on offer. What other festival do you know treats you to dishes like rock oysters and soft shell crab sliders? Talk about decadence!

With bellies full it was time for Jan Preston to bust out a little boogie woogie. It was just what the crowds ordered, and they were on their feet quickly. The makeshift grassy dance floor near the dual stages became even more crowded once modern funksters The Bamboos appeared. This soulful young outfit brought a youthful energy to a festival often dominated by more established acts. They did it without alienating the older audience members, which takes some skill. My parents, at 60 and 58, marvelled at Kylie Auldist’s pipes and the outfit’s tight brassy sound.

Then it was time for some of those more established acts I’ve alluded to. Festival favourite James Morrison showed why the organisers keep asking him back. I’ve seen him play so many times at the festival, but fatigue never seems to set in. Perhaps that’s due to his decision to work with various guest vocalists. This time around we were treated to the vocal stylings of Roxane LeBrasse, who I’d assumed had fallen off the face of the earth following Australian Idol. I loved her on the reality show, but was wowed by her vocals on Saturday. She’s matured and developed an incredible stage presence. Hearing her take on soul classics like “Chain of Fools,” and come out sounding every bit as good as Aretha Franklin, was something special.

James Morrison had us dancing, and Marcia Hines knew no one was quite ready to stop. There’s a reason why Miss Marcia continues to be such a musical force. Her voice has lost nothing over the years, and she’s a consummate professional on stage. She had me captivated from start to finish.

I wish I could say the same for the closing act, Canadian band The Shuffle Demons. My dad told me early in the first song that it would have to get better for us to stick around. It didn’t, so we hightailed it out of there two songs in. They might have looked like a party act with their silly headpieces and brass instruments, but they didn’t sound like one. There were no hooks or melodies, nothing for me to connect with at all. I just didn’t get it. Looking at the punters also packing up their stuff as we made for the exit, it seems I’m not alone.

After a day of great music, even the aural assault of The Shuffle Demons couldn’t dampen my enthusiasm for Jazz in the Vines. The day wasn’t perfect, but it was close enough to it to ensure I’ll be back again next year.

Major Tom Deliver Piano-Pop Smash with “On the Avenue”

Chelsea Reed, Eddie Delos Reyes, and Neel Shukla are Major Tom, a Sydney act who’re spreading good vibes with today’s release of their new single “On the Avenue.”

Chelsea’s a self-confessed 70s tragic, so it’s no surprise to hear a little ABBA meets Elton John vibe on this song. The thumping piano chords drive his feelgood number along and get toes tapping. Has it put a smile on your face?

Imogen Bell Impresses with “Snow Covered Hill”

Ease yourself into the working week with Imogen Bel and her stunning single “Snow Covered Hill.”

This is music at its purest. Imogen’s voice is sublime, and her lyrics poetic. The gentle piano arrangement supports these elements without overwhelming them. The song was produced in collaboration with Josh Schuberth and it features a stunning accordion guest spot from jazz queen Elana Stone.

“Snow Covered Hill” is available now through Imogen’s Bandcamp page.

The Good Ship Plays Shows to Support The Seven Seas

With Kat Cooke swapping her trumpet for a microphone, The Good Ship are preparing to launch their recently released third studio album, The Seven Seas.

What I love most about this Brisbane band is that they do it their way. No one else is singing sea shanties like the lead single “World Spin Round,” a dark number which tells of a boy looking to exact revenge upon the sea for taking his father and brother. More than just a gimmick, the eight-piece’s unique musical outlook is backed up by plenty of talent.

The Seven Seas was inspired by their sell-out hybrid musical theatre show, so it’s going to be best experienced on the stage. Fans can do just that when The Good Ship play the following shows along Australia’s East Coast.

15 November 2013 – The Powerhouse Theatre, Brisbane (All Ages)
7 December 2013 – Spectrum, Sydney
8 December 2013 – The Toff in Town, Melbourne
13 December – Festival of the Sun, Port Macquarie

Saskwatch Delight with “Hands”

Seriously, how good are Saskwatch? Just when I think I can’t love this energetic soul outfit any more than I already do, they release a song like “Hands.” If you’re feeling down, press play and dance around your lounge room. I guarantee you’ll feel better.

The feelgood track is accompanied by a cute clip starring travelling rabbits Larry and Alphy. Director Jason Galea spliced image of the rabbits with old VHS tapes and other vintage footage to create the “feel-good rabbit road trip film of the year.” As a final vintage touch, Saskwatch will release “Hands” as a 7” vinyl single on November 1.

Saskwatch will launch “Hands” with an extensive Aussie tour next month. Here are all the places you can see this exciting local act play!

If you were umming and aahing about getting to one of Sam Buckingham and Buffalo Tales’ upcoming gigs, this video might be just the thing to tip you over the edge. It features the talented twosome in the studio performing “Shackles,” a fan favourite from Sam’s I’m a Bird album.

Kate Miller-Heidke Announces Tour to Celebrate Crowdfunding Success

When Kate Miller-Heidke decided to release her first independent album with the help of her fans, she couldn’t have anticipated the response. She reached the target for recording and promoting O Vertigo! in just three days. That makes Kate’s Pledge Music campaign the fastest and most successfully direct-to-fan crowdfunding campaign by an Australian artist ever.

You might think that means you shouldn’t give, but there are still plenty of reasons to part with your cash. Everyone who pledges will receive a free download of an 11-track live album recorded on Kate’s Heavenly Sounds tour last year, and a download of O Vertigo! on release day, which is expected to be March 14. You can also score some amazing goodies including a spot on Kate’s guestlist for life, Kate’s own Wurlitzer piano, and Kate playing at your wedding. Five percent of all money raised will also help the World Wildlife Fund for Nature in their efforts to save the Great Barrier Reef.

It seems a bit early to start making plans for next March-April, but Kate wants us to lock her O Vertigo! album tour dates into our calendars. Which show will you see?

12 March 2014 – York Theatre @ Seymour Centre, Sydney
14 & 15 March 2014 – Paradiso Spiegeltent @ Garden of Unearthly Delights, Adelaide
18 March 2014 – Athenaeum Theatre, Melbourne
21 & 22 March 2014 – Quarry Ampitheatre, Perth
5 April 2014 – The Tivoli, Brisbane

Fractures On Comeback Trail with “Cadence”

Fractures had no idea how apt his stage name would become this year. He started 2013 with the release of “Twisted,” a track which earned more than 160,000 plays on Soundcloud and became the most played track on Triple J Unearthed.

But then it all took a turn for the worse before Fractures first live show. He was involved in a near-fatal fall which left him with fractured vertebrae in his neck. He was confined to a neckbrace bolted to his spine for three months.

Thankfully now his recovery is over and he’s celebrating with the release of his long-awaited follow-up single “Cadence,” a lush, atmospheric number about unrequited lust. It’s our first taste of Fractures forthcoming EP, which will hit stores next year.

Louis London Impress with “We’re Not Alone”

Sydney five-piece Louis London have rocked my socks off with the release of their latest single “We’re Not Alone.” If this killer cut is any indication, second-recording syndrome hasn’t struck with their forthcoming sophomore EP.

I love the interplay of retro synthesizers, classic guitars, and epic vocal harmonies. I think I’ve just found my summer soundtrack. I’ve just listened to it three times straight, and I’m pretty sure once I wrap up this article I’m going to give it another spin for good measure. Has it revved you?
