John Farnham Announces “Whispering Jack” Anniversary Tour

When John Farnham told us way back in 2003 that he was touring for “the last time” I’m not sure anyone really believed it. Since then he’s had almost as many comebacks as The Seekers, but when he continues to sound so good I’m not sure anyone’s complaining.

With the upcoming anniversary of Whispering Jack, Farnsy’s most successful album, he just couldn’t resist going on the road again. He’ll play shows in the major capitals’ most intimate venues. The first half of the show will see John and his band performing a variety of hits completely unplugged. Then in the second it’ll be all Whispering Jack, with the album performed in its entirety by the original band.

These shows are sure to be something special for any Aussie music fan. We’re glad to have you back Farnsy. Tickets go on sale on June 21.

Q & A with Nine Sons of Dan’s Morgan “Flakey” Blake

Nine Sons of Dan are generating some major buzz with a brand new single “She’s So Fine” and a critically acclaimed EP under their belt. The Gold Coast act have just kicked off an Aussie tour, so I figured it was about time that I caught up with drummer Morgan “Flakey” Blake to chat about working with Paramore’s Justin York, life on the road, and their big plans for the future.

You’ve just released your new single “She’s So Fine.” What can you tell me about the song?
“She’s So Fine” was written as an underdog story; the geeky guy in love with the mega babe! We wrote some poppier things for our EP and this was one of our favourite ones!

I believe you worked with Paramore guitarist Justin York on the track, which is such a massive coup. How did that come about?
The boys at LooseStones Studios, where the EP was tracked, work overseas quite often, and knew Justin from working at studios with him. They asked him if he would like to play some guitar on our tracks, and he digged them so he agreed! So stoked!

What was he like to work with?
Well unfortunately he had to do his parts over in the States. We couldn’t meet up and collaborate or anything like that. But by the sounds of things he is pretty cool guy! His playing was really tasteful and helped out the whole band. Jay got to hang with him when he went over to US earlier this year and said he was a champ.

You were lucky enough to have one of the finest women in Oz, Miss Universe Australia Jesinta Campbell in the song’s music video. How did that happen?
Well we won a competition last year. One of the prizes was a film clip. And the production company (ROAM) that did the clip knew her from a while back.

They brainstormed ideas for the clip and wanted a pretty attractive girl to play the lead character. They said they were aiming for someone pretty special, but when we met up with them and they pulled out the latest issue of FHM with Jesinta on the front, with a big grin on their faces, we were like no way freaking way! We thought it would be like a super pretty girl but definitely did not expect Jesinta to appear!

You’re going to tour this single all over the country in the coming months. That’s a long time to be on the road. How do you keep things fresh with such a long touring stretch?
Things like that just never seem long or boring to us. We haven’t been to most of the places on this tour before, so I think we will be amped enough to forget how long we drive or how long we wait or whatever. It’s all good to us! We are stoked just to be playing. Plus we will be surfing in between, partying, watching other gigs. It’s a pretty refreshing life!

The Living End Release New Single & Album, The Ending is Just the Beginning Repeating

They’ve kept us waiting for a while now, but The Living End are back with a new single and album. “The Ending is Just the Beginning Repeating” is the title track from what’s sure to be another smash album from these Aussie rockers.

The single might just throw fans for a loop though. Rather than the raucous rock they’re famous for, the song sees the band reflecting on the cycle of life and the need to manage grief. Its dark subject matter to be sure, but that change of pace might be just what the doctor ordered. It’s already enjoying high rotation on radio, which no doubt bodes well for the album release.

The album is a result of Chris Cheney’s writing trip to New York City, although the songs were laid down in South Melbourne. Acclaimed American producer Nick DiDia then massaged the tunes to create an album which is already being described as “astonishing.”

You can be the judge when The Ending is Just the Beginning Repeating hits record stores on July 22.

Q & A with The William Street Strikers’ Andrew Matters

The William Street Strikers are on the up with their debut album set to launch soon and an extensive Aussie tour lined up to promote it. I caught up with the band’s lead singer Andrew Matters before the madness begins to talk about the new release, the upcoming tour, and that quirky name.

Your band’s got a really interesting name. How did that come about?
We got our name for a few reasons. Firstly, we just wanted a name that would last the test of time and not date. We also wanted a name that could mean something or nothing, the reason being so we could release a number of albums under its banner and grow artistically without the name impeding that process by meaning something too genre specific. Then we also wanted a name with a bit of grunt and “urban decay cool” to it, which I think the name has. And finally, two of us live on William Street and we thought “OK, we live on William Street, we jam in the shed, so the William Street … ummmnnnn hey strikers!? Yeah , right on! Let’s go with that. I’d like to say we’re left wing socialists with an egalitarian ethos championing the rights of the down trodden but not just yet.

How would you describe your music for the uninitiated?
Our music is essentially designed to work in a live setting, to deal with the Australian pub punter who, in our experience, has a short attention span and demands to be entertained. So we are straight to the point without much excess. We road test our songs in this arena and if we go out and play a song and people jump up and down and clap then it makes the cut.

You’ve just finished recording your debut album. What can you tell me about it?
Our album has been a watershed moment for us. We have been working towards it for three years, and with hindsight it seems like in logical steps but in reality it came about because of someone else’s faith in us and their willingness to fund it. Having not to worry about financing it ourselves allowed us to really focus on the art of making music, as trite as that sounds it is a truism I think, to just worry about the essence of what music is all about.

Ben Salter Finally Releases “The Cat”

You might not know his name, but chances are you’re already familiar with Ben Salter’s work. The Brisbane singer-songwriter was a founding member of numerous Queensland bands including The Gin Club, Giants of Science, and The Wilson Pickers. But he’s also been quietly plugging away as a solo artist for the last ten years, playing shows throughout Australia and Europe.

After a decade as a solo artist, Ben has decided to keep some tracks for himself and lay them down. His debut album The Cat will finally hit stores on August 5. While most artists make music for their fans, no doubt Ben felt extra pressure in this regard. He actually reached out to his devotees through Indiegogo.com, and they donated $7000 to help him make the disc.

Fans of Ben’s previous band work may be surprised by this solo recording. It’s a bit different, with elements of folk, rock, and left of center pop, but that eclectic blend also helps set it apart. Hopefully they feel their money was well spent!

We’ll get a sneak peek at The Cat when Ben digitally releases “The Coward” on June 3. The song was actually penned more than 10 years ago, but its themes are just as relevant today as they were a decade ago. It explores mental health, share housing, love, and self belief with its beautifully melancholy lyrics. Look for it on Ben’s website on June 3.

And look for Ben this August, when he travels around the country with The Cat Empire lead singer Felix Riebl. Trust me; he’s a big reason to turn up early to these shows!

Tijuana Cartel Tour “Letting It Go” Single

Tijuana Cartel are having one last hurrah before locking themselves in a secluded Nimbin homestead to record their brand new album. And what better way to do it than visiting their loyal fans?

Tijuana Cartel will play shows along the east coast in June and July to support their new single “Letting it Go,” which comes from that as-yet-unrecorded album. It’s an addictive blend of electro pop and Tijuana Cartel’s trademark grooves, an upbeat wrapper with a bittersweet center. Songs about dying romance have never sounded quite this positive!

The tour is your last chance to see Tijuana Cartel before they launch the new recording in September, so don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Lia Tsamoglou is Melodie Nelson

After being a part of acclaimed Sydney acts Moonmilk and Rand and Holland, Lia Tsamoglou is stepping into the spotlight with her debut album, Meditations on the Sun. Her name is a bit of a mouthful, so look for her music under the more user-friendly moniker Melodie Nelson.

Whatever you call her, you’re likely to be impressed by this recording. Lia’s previous projects have brought a sense of maturity to this new solo endeavour. It’s also helped her seek out collaborations with Jason Molina, Jack Ladder, and the lads from Dappled Cities. The production team is also top notch, with Tony Dupe (Holly Throsby, Jack Ladder), Chris Townsend (Silverchair, Portishead, Violent Femmes), and Denis Blackham (Brian Eno, Elvis Costello), all having a hand in the disc.

The result is a recording that’s dreamy and psychedelic, honest and organic, and hopeful and melancholy all at the same time. In short, it’s something special. Look for it in stores when it’s released on June 3.

Watussi Launch New Single “Cuando Sera” with Charity Event

After they wooed us with the cheeky 1000% Handsome EP, Watussi are back with a brand new single “Cuando Sera.” The track is our first taste of the new Watussi album El Ovido, which will hit stores this September.

The song should help us shake off the winter chills with its blend of hot cumbia reggae and brass. The music is killer, but make sure you listen to the lyrics to hear the story of Clara Rojas, a Colombian political figure kidnapped by FARC guerillas. “Cuando Sera” translates to “When Will It Stop,” and it’s delivered with real sensitivity and respect to the issue.

So it’s fitting that $5 from the sale of every ticket sold to their single launch at The Basement will go to Project Seres. This charity initiative helps communities in El Salvador and Guatemala become greener and more sustainable. So head on down to The Basement in Sydney on June 17 for a night of great music for a great cause!

Mushu Back with “Bandit”

Mushu wowed me last year with their self-titled EP, so I’m thrilled to hear they’re back in the spotlight with a brand new single “Bandit.” Just like a thief in the night, this alt-country love song will steal your heart with its rich harmonies and buzzing synths.

The song, which drops digitally on June 10, shows us how much the band has developed their folky, poppy, alt-country sound since that EP. No doubt that maturity has come about through the band’s relentless touring schedule, which saw them take in America and Canada in between recording sessions.

We’ll get the chance to see Mushu on home stages when they launch “Bandit” next month with an east coast tour. Here are the dates!

The Cat Empire Bandmates Become The Genie

While Felix Riebl is out doing his solo thing, the other members of The Cat Empire aren’t just sitting idly. Ollie McGill, Ryan Monro, and Will Hull-Brown have created their own side project, The Genie.

This is more than just a few band mates gigging to pass the time until their fearless leader returns. The Genie have recorded a debut album Here Come the Scissors, which has actually been in the works in 2006. I guess it’s hard to find the time when The Cat Empire has been doing so well! The disc has had time to marinate and mature and will finally be unleashed with some launch shows in the major capitals.

Melbournites can see The Genie, along with their The Cat Empire bandmate DJ Jumps, at The Northcote Social Club on June 30. After that it’s off to Sydney’s The Basement to play with some undisclosed special guests on August 31.
