Kim Churchill Tours “Single Spark”

Kim Churchill will be spreading good vibes across Australia this summer as he sets out on his Single Spark tour. The shows will celebrate the recent release of the feel-good song “Single Spark,” the opening track from his latest album Silence/Win.

Kim’s been having an amazing ride for someone who grew up in coastal Merimbula. At just 24 years old he’s already played Glastonbury, the Montreal Jazz Festival, and the intimate Telluride Blues and Brews festival in the US. He’s also opened for the lines of Billy Bragg and Michael Franti, and been the headliner on tours across the United Kingdom, Europe, and Canada.

Conor Oberst Impresses Ahead of Aussie Solo Tour

Conor Oberst is another of those incredible American musicians I only discovered because I learned he was touring and figured I better do a little research. I’d heard of the band Bright Eyes without ever hearing any of their stuff, and I certainly didn’t know his name, but wow. We live in a time that is just rich with phenomenally talented singer-songwriters. Of course our own musicians are writing some superb material, but if you want to expand your horizons I definitely recommend checking this guy out.

As a little taster, check out this performance from Letterman a couple of month back. How good is that song? It manages to balance light and shade so beautifully. It had me tapping my toes and punching my fists in the air by the end. I’m so impressed.

If you are so, make sure you check out Conor when he visits Australia next year to support the relatively recent release of his solo album Upside Down Mountain. He’s also bringing along fellow Americans The Felice Brothers to sweeten the deal.

Sharon van Etten Announces Golden Plains Sideshows

Awesome American alt-country singer Sharon van Etten has announced sideshows in the East Coast capitals to coincide with her visit for Golden Plains. I must admit, I wasn’t aware of Sharon’s music until I caught her performance of “Every Time the Sun Comes Up,” from her most recent studio album Are We There, on Letterman.

Something tells me it’s only a matter of time before Sharon enters the mainstream consciousness, so if you love her music make sure you catch her playing intimate venues like these while you can.

1 March 2015 – Factory Theatre, Sydney
3 March 2015 – The Hi-Fi, Melbourne
4 March 2015 – The Zoo, Brisbane
7 March 2015 – Golden Plains Festival, Meredith

Busby Marou Announce My Second Mistake Tour

Busby Marou’s Farewell Fitzroy is one of those albums which has so many amazing songs that it’s hard to choose a favourite. But “My Second Mistake” is definitely amongst them. The playful song about fidelity, growing up, and a healthy dose of Catholic guilt now has an official release and an awesome Jim Henson-esque video to accompany it.

The Queenslanders are currently supporting James Blunt at the moment, but this is really just a warm-up for the headliner shows they’ll play on their My Second Mistake tour. It’ll be a real party with ex-Powderfinger guitarist Darren Middleton and banjo-wielding maestro Karl S Williams coming along for the ride.

Ron Pope Ready for Return Aussie Visit

I must admit, I hadn’t heard of New York’s Ron Pope until I saw he was coming to Australia. However, after listening to his new single “Lick My Wounds” I figure it’s a case of better late than never. It’s got a real pop core with country and folk overtones and some clever poetic lyrics. Great stuff.

“Lick My Wounds” comes from Ron’s debut album Calling off the Dogs, which hits local stores on June 6, the same day he kicks off his Aussie tour. This is the first time he’s played here with a full band, and he’s making the most of it with some in some of Australia’s most beloved venues.

He’s no stranger to our shores though, and can’t wait to be back Down Under.

“The people, the culture, the food, the wildlife … I love everything about Australia and I’m so excited to come back and visit my fans down there,” he said in a press release for his upcoming tour.

Harmony Tours Carpetboming

With their sophomore album Carpetboming sitting pretty in stores, Melbourne sextet Harmony are preparing to play some of Australia’s best pubs and clubs.

I must admit, I wasn’t sure what to make of the lead single “Water Runs Cold” at first. But slowly but surely, I got it. What initially seemed like a bit of a novelty song suddenly made so much sense. The raw lead vocals matched with angelic harmonies are flawless. It’s a great indication of what music lovers can expect from the album which has already earned plenty of critical acclaim. Carpetboming became PBS Radio’s feature album, and FBi Radio’s album of the week. Blunt Magazine also gave it a perfect five-star rating.

Harmony wowed fans when they supported The Drones last year. See them step into the spotlight and earn their rightful place as headliners at the following shows.

4 April 2014 – GoodGod Small Club, Sydney
5 April 2014 – The Phoenix, Canberra
12 April 2014 – The Brisbane Hotel, Hobart

Sam Buckingham Tours “Shackles”

Aussie folk songstress Sam Buckingham spends most of her time in the United States these days, so opportunities to see her play are few and far between. But she’ll play her first, and possibly her last Australian shows for 2014 when she promotes her single “Shackles” this month.

Fans of this blog might remember watching Sam playing the song with Buffalo Tales last October. Now the song’s got an official release and a gorgeous black and white video to match. Following this tour, Sam will head back to New York to get back to collaborating with some of America’s top producers and songwriters. Who knows when we’ll see this bright talent again, so catch her live while you’ve got the chance!

The Rolling Stones Heading to Australia

Two weeks after announcing they’ll play the newly revamped Adelaide Oval next March, the Rolling Stones have released dates for a full-scale Australian tour.

The British rock veterans will kick off the Aussie leg of their 14 on Fire shows in Perth before making their way around the capitals. A show at Hanging Rock is sure to be the pick of them, although I’m sure there’ll be plenty of demand for all these gigs.

“We’re all looking forward to coming back Down Under,” Keith Richards said. “I can’t wait to get back on the stage with the boys.” Bandmade Mick Jagger adds that he “can’t wait to reconnect” with local fans.

There are whispers this will be The Stones’ last shows in this country, so if you’re a fan I wouldn’t second-guessing picking up tickets when they go on sale on December 16. Note that the Adelaide show has already sold out through an earlier sale.

19 March 2014 – Perth Arena
22 March 2014 – Adelaide Oval (SOLD OUT)

28 March 2014 – Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne

Human Nature Come Home for Christmas Shows

In the 90s there were plenty of opportunities to see Human Nature. It seemed they were always appearing at a local shopping centre, performing on a TV program, or playing anywhere from an RSL to an entertainment centre. Those were the days. I remember fondly making glittery signs, queuing for hours to get the best possie, and screaming my teenage lungs out from the front row.

We’re all a little older now and plenty of things have changed. I resigned myself to the fact that Toby and I just weren’t meant to be and found a husband that makes a pretty good stand-in. I also expanded my musical tastes although I still turn up their songs when they come on the radio. And Toby, Phil, Andrew, and Mike packed their bags and moved to Las Vegas where they’ve been wowing crowds for the last six years.

They’re half a world away from home, but the guys from Human Nature make the trip back every December to spend Christmas with their families and play shows for the fans who miss them terribly. This December is no exception. Human Nature tickets are now on sale for The Christmas Tour. As its name suggests, this tour will see the four-piece vocal group performing Christmas classics alongside their smash pop singles and the Motown hits that took them to Vegas all those years ago. Many of those festive tunes will also be featured on Human Nature’s The Christmas Album, which will hit Aussie stores tomorrow.

If like me you remember your heart skipping a few beats over Australia’s own boy band, you can see Human Nature at one of the following shows next month.

5-8 December 2013 – The Palms at Crown, Melbourne
13 & 14 December 2013 – Jupiter’s Casino, Brisbane
17 & 18 December 2013 – State Theatre, Sydney
19 December 2013 – Festival Theatre, Adelaide
20 December 2013 – Perth Zoo
