Gary Clark Jr Brings Blues to Oz

Budding Texas blues legend Gary Clark Jr is bringing his music to Australia for the first time.

Gary Clark Jr has achieved some amazing things in his 28 years. Austin paid attention way back in 2001, when the mayor named May 3 official Gary Clark Jr. Day. That’s no small honour for a 17 year old! A few years ago he took the stage at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival alongside Clapton, Buddy Guy, and Ronnie Wood. This year he performed in an all-star band with BB King, Mick Jagger, and Jeff Beck for Barack Obama at the White House. He’s also collaborated with The Roots, Nas, and Alicia Keys and played at key festivals like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.

Gary Clark Jr has been named as part of next year’s Big Day Out festival, but if I were you I’d check him out at his much more intimate warm-up shows later this month. To commemorate the dates, Warner Music Australia has released a tour edition of the acclaimed Bright Lights EP. This disc, which hits record stores today, features 20 minutes of extra live music.

See Gary Clark Jr at Melbourne’s The Tote on September 27 or Sydney’s Annandale Hotel on September 28.

Primal Scream Return to Australia

Primal Scream are encouraging us to get our rocks off when they return to Australia this December.

The British lads clearly love Australia, as they were only here in 2011. If two years felt too long you’ll enjoy this chance to catch the band playing all the hits they’ve recorded over three decades in the biz. With a new album almost in the can, Aussie fans might also be lucky enough to hear some new tunes.

Of course fans will note that it’s not quite the same Primal Scream this time around, as long-time bassist Mani’s left the band. However with My Bloody Valentine’s Debbie Googe stepping up, music lovers are in good hands.

Tickets go on sale on Friday, September 7, for the following shows.

3 December 2012 – The Tivoli, Brisbane
5 December 2012 – Enmore Theatre, Sydney

The Eastern Ready to Rock Oz

Kiwi rock veterans The Eastern are bringing their music across the ditch.

They’re no household names here, but their last album Hope and Wire peaked at number one on New Zealand’s iTunes country chart, number two on the country’s artist charts, and number 11 on the nation’s national charts. They’re seasoned performers who rarely take a break from life on the road. They’ve also shared the stage with some of the world’s best including our own Jimmy Barnes, Fleetwood Mac, Steve Earle, and his son Justin Townes Earle.

The Eastern’s frontman Adam McGrath says, “we have one job, that is to play like our lives depend on it, If you’re there to see us play then we owe you, not the other way around!”

Tom Lark Bounces Back After Christchurch Quake with Aussie Tour

His practice space and studio might have been flattened in the Christchurch earthquake, but you can’t keep a musician like Tom Lark down.

He could have packed it in then and there but instead the Kiwi singer-songwriter went back to basics and sequestered himself in his bedroom. Rather than feeling hemmed in by the space’s restrictions, he became inspired by his new limitations. The not so originally titled Tom Lark EP is the result of this flurry of creativity. The disc features the new single “Give You All My Lovin’” and other songs which marry Tom’s innate sense of storytelling and folky guitar sounds.

Tom and his band will touch down in Australia for the first time next month to bring the EP to the masses. Catch them at the following venues, including dates supporting Sydney muso Feelings.

12 September 2012 – Bakery Lane, Brisbane
12 September 2012 – Ric’s Bar, Brisbane
19 September 2012 – Beach Road Hotel, Bondi (with Feelings)
20 September 2012 – Trinity Bar, Canberra (with Feelings)

Sola Rosa and Special Guests Visit Oz

Genre defying Kiwi urban act Sola Rosa will return to Australia next month to support the recent release of their fifth album Low and Behold, High and Beyond.

The album sees a host of guest performers joining founding member Andrew Spraggon and his regular collaborators for songs that fuse soul, funk, jazz, hip hop, and other musical styles.

Sola Rosa started as Andrew’s one man band, but in time Spikey Tee, Ben White, and Matt Short have become key members of the project. This core group will be joined on the Aussie tour by guest singers Cherie Mathieson and L.A. Mitchell, who appears on the album’s cruisy first single “Spinning Top.”

Sola Rosa will play the following Aussie venues next month. Tickets are on sale now.

All the Young Tour Oz

All the Young hail from Stoke on Trent, a small town where its residents are expected to earn money in the warehouse and spend it in the pub. The locals don’t expect anyone to break out of this monotony, least of all some motley lads who spend more time daydreaming about music than applying themselves.

But All the Young did, and now they’re heading to Australia. If their friends could only see them now.

The Aussie tour is well timed, as All the Young’s debut album Welcome Home will hit local stores on August 31. It will feature the current single “Another Miracle,” which is one of the most irresistible songs I’ve heard in some time.

See these old school rockers with Australia’s own King Cannons at the following shows:

29 August 2012 – The Loft, Warrnambool
30 August 2012 – Jive Bar, Adelaide
31 August 2012 – The Bended Elbow, Geelong

Smash Mouth Announce Comeback Tour

Smash Mouth haven’t had a hit on the Aussie charts since their cover of “I’m a Believer” in 2001, but they’ve decided to mount a comeback with a brand new album and an Australian tour.

The band’s lead singer Steve Harwell is confident we’ll love the material from the brand new album MAGIC just as much as the old stuff.

“We’ve got so many hits on this new record it’s ridiculous,” he insisted. However something tells me most people will buy tickets to these shows to hear tracks like “All-Star” and “Walkin’ on the Sun.”

Tickets went on sale today for these somewhat unexpected shows!

Rick Astley Rick Rolls Australia

We’ve seen some strange tour announcements this year, but the news that Rick Astley is visiting our shores may be one of the most surprising yet. Sure Rick’s enjoyed another 15 minutes of fame with the rise of the Rick Roll, but a trip all the way to Oz still seems like it’s come out of left field.

Remember though, Rick didn’t just bring us “Never Gonna Give You Up.” He was responsible for a swag of 80s hits, including “Whenever You Need Somebody,” “Together Forever,” and the very underrated “Cry for Help.”

Rick hasn’t released a new studio album since 2005’s Portrait, so this tour will be all about the nostalgia. You can take a trip down memory lane with him at the following shows:

16 November 2012 – Twin Towns, Tweed Heads
17 November 2012 – Ipswich Civic Hall, Ipswich
18 November 2012 – Tivoli Brisbane, Brisbane
21 November 2012 – Canberra Theatre, Canberra
23 November 2012 – Evan Theatre, Penrith
24 November 2012 – Waves Nightclub, Wollongong
25 November 2012 – Enmore Theatre, Sydney
29 November 2012 – Kinross Woolshed, Albury
30 November 2012 – The Palace, Melbourne
1 December 2012 – Chelsea Heights Hotel, Melbourne

Mumford & Sons Make Long Awaited Australian Return

Can you believe it’s been three years since Mumford & Sons treated us to their breakthrough album Sigh No More? The Brits will finally unleash their sophomore effort in September, and they’re wasting little time in bringing the music to Aussie fans.

American indie-folksters Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes will play all but the final Queensland shows, while fellow Yank Willy Mason will appear at all 10 gigs.

Tickets will go on sale from the usual outlets on Monday July 9, which gives us all a little time to save the cash!
