The Lucky Wonders Take Thirteen O’Clock Around Oz

The Lucky Wonders are stepping out of Byron Bay and taking their music around Australia with the recent release of their debut album Thirteen O’Clock.

Singer-songwriters Jessie Vintila and Emma Royle join bassist Brent Calcutt and drummer Anastassijah Scales to create some of the most gorgeous folk-pop I’ve heard in some time. “So You’re Never” is a taste of the music we can expect to hear on the LP. The disc was recorded in Byron with the assistance of Anthony Lycenko (Xavier Rudd, The Beatiful Girls, Pete Murray).

“This album covers a lot of ground, the individual tracks read like chapters in a bigger story, and in the end you’re left with something real but optimistic,” explained Emma. “Despite our contrasting life experiences we create something special when we write together. It’s like, yeah, life can hurt sometimes, but if you stay open, there is a chance at something bigger and fuller.”

If you like what you hear, make sure you catch The Lucky Wonders when they visit a town near you. And with 40 plus dates on the Thirteen O’Clock Album Launch tour, there’s bound to be one near you!

The Strokes Announce Aussie Tour

The Strokes are winging their way to Australia for a blink-and-you’ll-miss it tour this July.

Rolling Stone Magazine Celebrates 1000th Cover

The rock quintet will play shows in Sydney and Melbourne for the first time since the release of their 2006 album First Impressions of Earth. Something tells me it’s going to be worth the wait. If we’re lucky we’ll also get a sneak peek at album number four which the band are currently recording with Grammy Award-winning producer Joe Chiccarelli (U2, Beck).

Of course, after such a long absence we can expect the tickets to sell quickly when they go on sale on April 12. Ticketek will sell tickets for the July 29 performance at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, and Ticketmaster will handle the July 30 show at Melbourne’s Festival Hall.

Q & A with The Fray’s David Welsh

Australia is known the world over for its sun, surf, and sand. And so when it doesn’t deliver for our international guests, I almost feel like we’re letting them down. Alas, today it was grey and stormy when I caught up with The Fray’s guitarist David Welsh for a chat. However, we were determined not to let the gloomy weather get us down as we chatted about the band’s current Aussie tour, upcoming album, and wave of success.

Arrivals At The MTV Australia Awards 2009

I’m sorry we couldn’t have turned on better weather for you!
You know what? It’s alright. We were in Singapore the last couple of days and it was blisteringly hot and humid. This is not bad.

You’re regular visitors to this country. What keeps you coming back?
Well we can still play here, so that’s a positive. It’s a great place to play, actually. I don’t know, it’s something about some combination of our music and the fans here, and the connection that that makes. I don’t know, it’s working and it’s a lot of fun.

You played the first show of your Aussie tour last night in Sydney. How did that go?
It was great. It was really great. There was some very great synergy between the people and us on stage. I think we kind of needed it. The Singapore show was a little rough; it was the first one in a couple of weeks off and we were a little rusty.

And I believe that the Asian audiences can be a bit more reserved too. Is that right?
I think anybody is reserved compared to an Australian!

Fair enough! Will you get a chance to do any sightseeing while you’re here?
I don’t know. I went to a store just now that a friend of mine from LA recommended and I got a shirt, so that’s cool. So that’s something I did!

The Black Ryder Score International Releases and The Cult Support Slot

Things are on the up for moody psychedelic outfit The Black Ryder. The band has just inked deals which will see their debut album Buy The Ticket, Take the Ride released in Japan and the United States of America.

Rave reviews at home inspired Vinyl Junkie in Japan and Mexican Summer in the USA to take a chance on the Aussie duo. Of course, it’s not really much of a gamble. Aimee Nash and Scott Ryper earned international acclaim as part of The Morning After Girls, and the album features collaborations with Ricky Maymi of Brian Jonestown Massacre and Leah Shapiro and Peter Hayes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Live shows from The Black Ryder are somewhat of a rarity, which makes their recent appointment as support act for the Cult’s Love Live national tour this May even more exciting. You can see the Black Ryder and The Cult at the following shows around the country.

5 May 2010 – The Tivoli, Brisbane
6 May 2010 – Big Top Luna Park, Sydney
8 May 2010 – Palais Theatre, Melbourne
10 May 2010 – Thebarton Theatre, Adelaide
12 May 2010 – Metro Theatre, Perth

The Temper Trap Announce Another Aussie Tour

The Temper Trap clearly love being at home. Despite making waves overseas and playing Aussie shows just a couple of months ago, the local lads will return for a handful of dates this July.

The band will play relatively small venues in Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney. Catch them before they start hitting the entertainment centres; tickets for the following shows are available next Monday March 29.

22 July 2010 – Metro City, Perth
24 July 2010 – Festival Hall, Melbourne
27 July 2010 – Hordern Pavillion, Sydney

Parents Criticise Lady Gaga Shows, But Should Kids Be There Anyway?

Lady Gaga is just two nights into her Australian tour and already parents have jumped on the flamboyant performer. They’re begging us to think of the children and calling for concerts to carry a classification similar to films and albums.

Lady GaGa performs live in concert at Glasgow's SECC as part of her Monster Ball Tour

Personally I think the whole thing’s ludicrous. I’m not a parent, but if I was I wouldn’t take my child to see Lady Gaga. I have nothing against the performer or her brand of entertainment, but it’s one built on shock value. Her recent film clip for “Telephone” contains a healthy dose of violence and nudity, so I’d expect her live concert to feature similar elements. It’s just not something I’d expose a small child to, but I don’t condemn any parent who does.

While I don’t condemn any parent who opts to take their child to see Lady Gaga, I am critical of those who bring children to a show without being informed. I think it’s good parenting to be aware of the content of art your child is consuming and make a choice accordingly. If you want to expose them to entertainment that’s edgy, do it by all means. But don’t attend a performance blindly and then express your moral outrage.

I don’t see how we could possibly give concerts a ratings system. They’re live performances, and at their best completely unscripted. Consider an artist who lets a few f-bombs fly while bantering with their audience between songs. Should they play to a strictly adult crowd, or be forced to watch their language? What I love most about an evening of live music is its spontaneity. If we introduce ratings we lose that, which would be a very sad thing indeed.

Georgia Fair Record Album Abroad

It’s been a little while coming, but the debut album from Georgia Fair shouldn’t be too far away.

The Sydney duo, famous for their catchy folk-pop tune “Picture Frames,” are currently recording the album in North Carolina with producer Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses fame.

But Ben Riley and Jordan Wilson be back soon enough, as they’re scheduled to join Lisa Mitchell on her Oh Hark! National Theatre tour next month. These should be fantastic shows with gorgeous intimate venues and fellow folksters Boy and Bear also on the bill.

Tickets for all shows are on sale on March 19 from the venues.

Rufus Wainwright Cancels Aussie Tour

Rufus Wainwright has cancelled his upcoming Australian tour due to illness in the family. Unfortunately, this has also seen the cancellation of his Day on the Green concerts with Paul Kelly.

“We are all incredibly disappointed that Rufus has had to cancel his tour,” A Day on the Green promoter Michael Newton said in a statement. “Unfortunately we have no time to secure another artist of the same calibre to replace him as the co-headline act, which makes it economically unviable to continue with the show. We hope we will see Rufus at A Day on the Green next summer.”

Ticket holders can now get a full refund from their place of purchase.

But there is a silver lining for fans. Apparently they’ll get priority ticket allocated when Rufus returns later this year.
