Swanee and Melinda Schneider Pair Up On “Should’ve Never Let You Go”

They just don’t make music like “Should’ve Never Let You Go” anymore. This duet from John “Swanee” Swan and Melinda Schneider has all the magic of a track from Tony Bennett or Frank Sinatra, but it’s actually a cover of a song Neil Sedaka released in 1980 with his daughter Dara. There’s a beautiful stillness about what they do here. The artists respect the melody and give the lyrics time to breathe. It doesn’t sound like anything people are releasing today, and that’s a big part of what makes it so special.

“Should’ve Never Let You Go” is one of the impressive collaborations featured on Swanee’s new album Believe. Fifteen of its 16 songs are collaborations with friends and family members including Jimmy Barnes, Alan and Mahalia Barnes, Diesel, Joe Camilleri, Dave Gleeson, Jack Jones, Colin Hay, Ian Moss, and so many more. Fourteen of its tracks are covers, and it’s fascinating hearing what they bring to such fantastic material.

Believe is the supreme pizza of Australian rock and soul as it features my friends and family from my 50-year working career,” Swanee said. “This album is about resilience, redemption, and refusing to give up – in music, and in life. I called it Believe because that’s what it takes. Belief in yourself, in second chances, and in the power of a great song.”

While “Should’ve Never Let You Go” is on streaming services, you won’t find the Believe album there. Swanee’s gone old school. You can purchase your choice of CD or double vinyl directly from his website.

Mitch King’s New Single Will Make You a Believer

“Believe,” the new single from Queensland indie folk singer Mitch King is like chicken soup for this cold-ridden music blogger. It’s got a beautiful message delivered so sweetly with an acoustic guitar and Mitch’s superb vocals.

“The more you believe the more you’ll create what you want out of life,” Mitch explained of the song’s inspiration. “Sometimes you have to let go of old ways of thinking and ingrained programs in the mind to sincerely believe in yourself, goals and passions.”

Amen. This stunning song is paired perfectly with the film clip, shot in picture-perfect New Zealand.

Mitch plans to spend the rest of 2018 recording, writing, releasing, and playing live gigs. He’ll play BBQ Bazaar at Burleigh tomorrow night from 7 pm.

Elesia Iimura Has a Terrible Film Clip But Great Sound

Brisbane soulstress Elesia Iimura shows that she’s got star quality with the release of her new single “Believe.” She’s got an angelic voice which reminds me of the late Aaliyah and a really fresh sound.

I just wish that I had a Soundcloud version rather than the clip, because I think it’s pretty distracting. I’m no prude but I don’t think the over-sexualised video is doing Elesia any favours. It’ll appeal to a certain demographic of course, but will they be listening to her talent or simply marvelling at her physique?

Elesia’s set for big things after supporting Boyz ll Men and K-Ci & Jo Jo and wowing crowds on a recent promo trip to Japan. She’ll shoot her new video clip in Jamaica later this year, which hopefully won’t trade as blatantly on her good looks.
