Chill For a Bit With Bumpy’s “Cosy Comfy”

I’ve been following Bumpy’s beautiful music for nearly three years, so it’s amazing to me that she hasn’t yet released a debut album. Rest assured though, it’s on its way. Before she does, she’s offering us a taste of her latest music with the gorgeous new single “Cosy Comfy.” As its name suggests, this one wraps around you like a warm blanket and encourages you to take a little “me” time.

“The pressure on creatives is ever growing – stretching platforms and content. Sometimes the wheel is running so fast you don’t know how to get off it,” Bumpy acknowledged. “This song is a reminder that things can be slow. You can choose to change your pace at any point. And sometimes all ya gotta do is rug up in your favourite sweater and sit outside with a cuppa.”

“Cosy Comfy” comes from Bumpy’s debut album Kanana, a Noongar phrase meaning “land where the sun sets,” which drops on October 3. It’s available to pre-order now. Bumpy will bring her music to the following events over the next couple of months.

Bumpy Releases Dreamy New Single, “Maambakoort”

Naarm/Melbourne-based Noongar artist Bumpy is back with her breathtaking new single “Maambakoort,” her first new music since the release of her debut EP Morning Sun in 2023. This neo-soul single an exercise in restraint and the perfect vehicle for showcasing her spine-tingling voice.

“’Maambakoort’ means ocean,” Bumpy explained. “This song narrates the way I felt when I entered the saltwater on my country. It felt powerful. It felt dramatic. The wind swirled around me and the light broke through the clouds. It felt like it recognised me. The water connects me to my Ancestors who also swam in those oceans, connecting me to my past, present and future generations.

“I wanted it to be grand like that encounter and the instrumentation to sound like the rumbling and crashing ocean. This track features the choir and specifically my siblings Emmy, Ben and Dan singing language in the climax of the song. It really highlighted the impact of language learning and that with every new word I learn and pass on, affects all the people around me.”

“Maambakoort” comes with this gorgeous music video directed by Emily Dynes. I don’t normally talk fashion on this blog, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that it features stunning outfits from ethical plant-based Afro-Futurist artisan clothing label REMUSE.

Bumpy Releases Soulful New Single, “Overdrawn”

Ultra-cool Naarm/Melbourne-based Noongar superstar Bumpy is back with her latest single “Overdrawn.” I’m not sure if it’s Bumpy’s incredible vocals or that horn section, but this one’s given me goosebumps.

“‘Overdrawn’ draws parallels between self-indulgence, overexertion and projected expectations. Too many times (especially as blak women) we are told how to present and provide, often pushing our boundaries to accommodate others,” she admitted. “I wanted to create a playful world for me to take back ownership and reflect on my capacity and where it should be directed. Allowing myself to indulge a little, knowing that we are worthy of taking up space and learning how to juggle expectations vs. capacity”.

Bumpy is making the most of the summer festival season with some really cool slots in the coming months. Make sure you check out her set at one of the following events:

27 December 2023 – Woodford Folk Festival, Mulgumpin/Moreton Bay
30 December 2023 – 1 January 2024 – NYE on the Hill, Gunaikurnai Country/South Gippsland (SOLD OUT)
8-11 March 2024 – WOMADelaide @ Botanic Park, Tarntanya/Adelaide

Find Yourself Under Bumpy’s Spell With “Hide & Seek”

What better way to kick off the New Year than with one of the country’s very best voices? Bumpy, a Naarm/Melbourne artist and proud Noongar woman, is about to release her debut EP, but before that she’s treating us to a sumptuous new single, Hide & Seek”.

“‘Hide & Seek has lived in many different forms in this project. From playing it solo, duo, trio to full band it has been a really enjoyable time arranging it to be recorded, trying to reflect more of the live band’s sound,” Bumpy explained. “Hide & Seek follows the playfulness of desire and the feelings of getting caught up in temptation.”

This track showcases Bumpy’s sublime vocals perfectly. Her soulful voice is just exquisite, and she knows how to use it just right. She isn’t one of those artists who litters her songs with runs and trills, preferring instead to use her voice to tell stories. It’s so authentic and honest, ensuring her message cuts through.

“Hide & Seek” comes from Bumpy’s EP Morning Sun, which drops on January 27.
