“what if it ends?” – Sidney

I’ve championed Sidney’s music for years, so I made sure to write a review of her brand new EP what if it ends? before I left for my overseas trip. New on all your favourite streaming platforms today, it’s a poignant exploration of love and loss with the title question at its core.

The single “sliding doors” opens the EP with its jubilant chorus and upbeat indie-pop feel. While it was inspired by the fictional romance movie, as you move from this track to the songs that follow, you realise Sidney’s drawing from her own experiences in this collection. They’re so real, so raw, that anyone who’s ever loved and lost hard will relate. “Long haul” is another fantastic single, but it hits a little bit harder with its lyrics exploring the reluctance to let an established relationship slip through the fingers.

We’re getting deeper, in preparation for “golden boy.” This beautiful, bittersweet ballad kills me. I rarely recount lyrics, but the lines “Can we just make out until it’s over? Can we just keep on holding our breath? ‘cause that way we’re both distracted and we won’t see how this ends” have my heart. We stay in the quiet a little longer with “the difference.” Its dreamy, melancholy feel reminds me so much of Mazzy Star’s “Fade Into You.” If your heart wasn’t already split open, the deep yearning of “anything” might get you there. Sidney’s vocals, which seem to move effortlessly from breathy falsetto to powerhouse full voice, have never sounded better. Sidney brings the energy back up with the EP’s title track. Feeling a little like a bookend for “sliding doors,” it really is the perfect closer with a feel-good vibe that softens the blow of those sucker-punch lyrics.

Emotionally honest, beautifully real, and always compelling, what if it ends? is out now.

Sidney Teases Upcoming Ep With “long haul”

After wowing me with “sliding doors,” Naarm/Melbourne-based talent Sidney is impressing me all over again with her latest release “long haul.” This track cements her reputation as one of the best indie-pop acts in the country. With serious songwriting skills, a knack for crafting unforgettable melodies, and a compelling voice, she’s really one to watch.

Recalling the time that inspired “long haul,” Sidney shared “I was on the road all the time doing what I loved, but my partner couldn’t be there with me. The distance caused tension, and I felt torn between chasing my career and showing up for the person I loved. ‘long haul’ was my way of saying: I’m here, I’m choosing you, and I’m in this for real.”

“long haul” is the latest track lifted from Sidney’s forthcoming EP what if it ends? which drops on February 27.

Sidney Opens Up With “sliding doors”

‘90s romantic-comedy Sliding Doors is one of those movies that lives in my mind rent-free. The premise of a single decision completely changing the trajectory of your life is fascinating. It seems local singer-songwriter Sidney agrees, as the flick inspired her fantastic new indie-pop single, also called “sliding doors.”

“I was still holding onto the belief that if I just pushed hard enough, maybe it could still work. But sometimes, choosing one path is what shows you the truth about what you actually wanted,” Sidney explained. “With its light/dark contrast and undercurrent of emotional unrest, ‘sliding doors’ sonically captures the emotional tug-of-war at the heart of the EP, sitting right at the tipping point between fantasy and clarity.”

Sidney will release that EP on February 27. You can hear a couple more songs from that release, including previous singles “golden boy” and “what if it ends?” on your favourite streaming services.

SIDNEY Calls Out the “NICE GUY” With Empowering New Single

SIDNEY slams those guys who aren’t as nice as they seem in her new pop bop, “NICE GUY”. Just be warned; once you hear it once you will not be able to get this earworm out of your head. I’m not sure that’s a bad thing though!

“’NICE GUY’ was written as an attempt to take the power back after a pretty devastating rejection I went through during lockdown,” she reflected. “[NICE GUY] was definitely the ‘I’m over it, screw this guy, I deserve better’ moment. We really wanted this to be a crowd-pleasing uptempo bop, for anyone who was told they weren’t good enough, didn’t look the part or were never issued an apology for hurtful life-altering comments. This one’s for you!”

After recently travelling around the country supporting Harrison Storm, SIDNEY will play Wesley Anne in Naarm/Melbourne on September 15 supporting Charlie McCosh at her “When I Look in the Mirror” single launch.
