Tom Neilson Drops Bold New Folk Single, “Fool’s Gold”

Tom Neilson reminds us that all that glitters isn’t gold with his fantastic new single “Fool’s Gold.” I was instantly struck by its lush sound. Folk music is dominated by stripped-back, acoustic tunes, so hearing a folk song featuring a trumpet and trombone is a real revelation.

While the music makes an instant impact, it’s the lyrics that have really stuck with me. Tom says “Fool’s Gold” is “A song about chasing what glitters, losing your way, and finding what truly matters.”

Tom will celebrate the release of “Fool’s Gold” by playing the Airlie Beach Festival of Music tonight. He’ll also play Bob’s Bar as part of Woodford Folk Festival on Sunday, 28 December and Thursday, 1 January. Tickets are available now through the Woodford Folk Festival website.

Tom Neilson Releases Exquisite New Single, “Minefield”

Tom Neilson strips things right back for his breathtaking new single “Minefield.” Inspired by the music of Regina Spektor, it shows us that a great song needs little more than top-notch lyrics, vocals, and melody.

This is a bit of a left-turn from Tom’s previous works, but I’m here for it. He described the songwriting process as “a transformative creative journey” akin to “falling deeper into wonderland.”

I want to sit with this gorgeous song just a little bit, but Tom is already looking forward to his next project: the release of his debut EP on May 3.

Tom Neilson Releases Feelgood Folk Ditty, “Lifted”

Former Standby Empire frontman Tom Neilson has totally reinvented himself, trading in his electronic music for sweeter folk-pop sounds. After listening to his latest single “Lifted,” I can’t imagine him doing anything else. This is such a heartwarming number that celebrates the people whose love helps us move through this thing called life.

“Love. Life. Hope and loss. ‘Lifted’ is my ode to our resilient beating hearts. Our connection to one another. Our intrinsic willingness to love again and again,” Tom explained. “It’s love in the face adversity, love in the face of doubt, love in that face of fear and love in face of pain. From gentle beginnings this song builds towards its joyful finale, a celebration of our loving hearts and their capacity to lift us all.”

Take a listen and I swear you’ll feel better about the world. And maybe feel inspired to call some of the special people in your life. I hear Tom has plenty of new music ready to go, so make sure you follow him on the socials to learn all about it as soon as it drops.
