Britney Spears Plans Aussie Tour

It sounds like Britney Spears will bring her Circus tour to Australia sooner rather than later.

Leading local promoters are in talks with the former pop trainwreck who is expected to visit our shores later this year.

“All the promoters are vying for it, but the bottom line is that she really wants to come here and she really wants to come this year,” said Sony boss Denis Handlin.

Michael Gudinski is one of the promoters hoping to bring Britney over for her first Aussie tour.

“I don’t expect anything will be worked out or finalised for a month, but we’re in there,” he confirmed.

“It will be one of the biggest concert productions to come here.”

With a rotating stage, acrobats, a stripper pole, and a greatest hits set, it certainly sounds like it. The less said about those lip-synching allegations the better!

Aussie Stars Get Together for Melbourne Earth Day Show

Australian music fans have an extra reason to get to the Earth Day to be held in Melbourne’s Federation Square on March 28.

The show will feature a very special one-of performance by a new supergroup. Special guest frontman Paris Wells, Kram, Chris Cheney (Living End), Nic Cester (Jet), Renee Geyer, and Vika & Linda will play with an all-star band. That celebrity ensemble will include Ash Naylor (Paul Kelly), Wally Meanie (Meanies), Matt Cotter (Even), and Bruce Haymes (Renee Geyer). They’ll play a selection of eco-friendly cover versions. Word is that “Gimme Shelter” has made the set list.

Peter Garrett will also make an appearance, but he’ll be chatting about the environment rather than busting out some tunes.

The entire show will be powered by the energy generated by 300 bicycles, which is very cool indeed!

More than 8000 are expected to attend the free show, but it sounds worth braving the crowds for!

ARIA Awards in Doubt

They say the show will go on, but no one is quite sure where this year’s ARIA music awards will be held, and who will broadcast the big event.

ACER Arena has hosted the show since 2001, but this year’s venue hasn’t been booked either. That has some joking that this year’s ceremony may be a very scaled back affair.

“It’s so up in the air at this stage that we’re jokingly thinking about putting a reserve booking on the Cowra Community Hall,” a senior source associated with the ARIAs told The Daily Telegraph.

Financial constraints have reportedly led to Network Ten’s contract lapsing. They have broadcast 15 of the past16 awards shows at a cost of $1 million each, on top of rights.

But an ARIA spokeswoman said she is confident they’ll find another broadcast partner.

“We’re excited about different ideas and plans for it. But we imagine they will be broadcast – but it’s still up in the air,” she said.

Industry gossip has it that the event will go to pay TV, and I for one am hoping that’s not the case. Free to air has lost the Grammys, the American Music Awards, and recent big shows like Sound Relief to pay TV. As a music fan without cable I’d be upset to miss yet another big music event.

A December Wedding for Delta and Brian

There’s no date just yet, but it looks like glamour couple Brian McFadden and Delta Goodrem will get hitched in December.

“We’re looking at the end of the year, Christmas time, in Australia,” Brian said in Ireland this week.

“During the next couple of weeks, we’ll definitely be setting a date.”

The Goodrem-McFadden clan expanded this week. Brian has two daughters, Molly and Lily-Sue, and now they have two puppies! The fluffballs are named Vail and Aspen after Delta’s favourite ski fields. How cute!

John Farnham Ready for a Comeback Record

It doesn’t seem like too long ago that John Farnham was bidding us farewell on his The Last Time tour. But in true rock star style, it seems it wasn’t the last time at all. Not by a long shot.

Following his triumphant return at the Sound Relief concert comes news that Farnsy is heading back to the studio. And he might even be bringing Coldplay with him.

“I am pretty confident we will have a new studio album out from John Farnham this year,” his longtime manager Dennis Handlin told The Daily Telegraph. He also hinted that Coldplay might pen one of the tracks on the long awaited recording.

It’s been four years since Farnsy gave us a studio album. Judging by the reception at Sound Relief, it seems that’s been four years too long!

The Who Help Victorian Bushfire Victims

They couldn’t be in Oz to perform at the Sound Relief concert, but The Who are still committed to giving to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. $25 from new tickets sold for their Grand Prix concert in Melbourne on Sunday will go to the relief fund. The tickets will include the show and entry to the Grand Prix.

“The entire music community has shown incredible support for the Bushfire Appeal,” said concert promoter Andrew McManus said in a statement. “It’s the responsibility of all of us to do everything we can to help heal these terrible tragedies. The Who could not be here to take part in the Sound Relief Concerts but we sincerely hope this new ticket initiative will add some well-needed funds to the Appeal.”

Tickets are available online at ticket.com.au/donate, or by calling Ticketek on 132 849 and quoting the word “Donate.” Tickets will also be available at the Albert park track on the day when the work “Donate” is quoted.

David Campbell @ Mingara Recreation Club, 11 March 2009

As I get older, it takes a little bit more to entice me to a midweek gig. It takes a performer who doesn’t just sing but entertains, one who leaves a part of themselves on the stage, and one who is a whole lot of fun. It takes a performer like David Campbell.

I raved about David when I caught his Swing Sessions tour, but I knew this show would be a little different. His latest album explores another time, swapping classic crooning for the swinging tunes of the sixties. But the philosophy remains the same. David continues to deliver songs that stand the test of time because they’re just that good.

The songs give David a solid foundation, but it’s what he brings that makes them exceptional. He’s a rare performer, one that does all he can to truly entertain. He swivels his hips to make the girls scream, easily tells amusing anecdotes between songs, wears some of the most outrageous outfits I’ve ever seen on a straight man, and sings like a dream.

He was here to promote his new album Good Lovin’, but that doesn’t mean his other songs were forgotten. He loves to swing, and he delivered highlights of his Swing Sessions albums with gusto. And then he went further back to deliver some Johnny O’Keefe classics from the musical “Shout.” It didn’t matter which decade the songs came from; we knew them all and enthusiastically sang and clapped along.

Songs like “Just a Gigolo” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” were irreverent, while tender moments like “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” and the breathtaking “Mr Bojangles” nearly reduced me to tears.

I cannot say enough good things about David Campbell. Seeing him live is a special experience indeed. His Good Lovin’ tour is travelling all around the country at the moment. See it. You will not be disappointed.
