Call the Shots’ New EP Drops

The long wait is finally over for Call the Shots’ loyal fans. The Brisbane punk-rock band released their second EP, When Everything When Goes Wrong today.

It’s been two years in the making, so it’s only right that When Everything Goes Wrong is closer to a mini-album at seven tracks. It features the single “Alexis Texas” and a few tracks with guest vocals from Tony Lovato of Mest.

Call the Shots say their fans mean “nothing less than everything in the world” to them, so it’s only right that they’re taking the EP on the road. Call the Shots will support the release of When Everything Goes Wrong with the following launch shows.

21 April 2013 – The Old Museum, Brisbane
27 April 2013 – The Metro (Lair), Sydney
11 May 2013 – Fowlers Live, Adelaide
26 May 2013 – Fitzroy Town Hall, Melbourne

The Growl Tour Debut Album

After warming up crowds on Tame Impala’s local and North American shows, The Growl are ready to head out on their own. Next month the bluesy Western Australian band will play gigs around the country to promote tomorrow’s release of their debut album What Would Christ Do??

The album contains the brand new single “Liarbird”, which is so swampy and sexy and downright delicious. I love Cameron Avery’s raspy vocals and that deep, fuzzy bass. It’s not pretty, but its raw energy is infectious.

Expect plenty of that energy in the flesh at the following shows.

19 April 2013 – Brighton Up Bar, Sydney
20 April 2013 – Ric’s Café, Brisbane (FREE)
24 April 2013 – The Workers Club, Melbourne
26 April 2013 – Cats @ Rocket Bar, Adelaide
27 April 2013 – Wolf Lane Carpark, Perth

Kelly Dance Impresses with “Head in the Noose”

Kelly Dance offers us a delicious taste of her forthcoming debut album, Goodnight Berlin, with the lead single Head In The Noose.

As its title suggests, this is an unflinching, searing track. I love its raw honesty. What an incredible mix of lyric, stripped back melody, and compelling vocals. It’s got me very excited about Goodnight Berlin, which is due to hit stores on May 17.

I hear the album is “dark and nostalgic, sweet and unsettling”, which all sounds pretty perfect to me. Kelly recorded it over ten days and nights holed up in a German studio. She’s joined by guest vocalists Toby Martin of Youth Group and Adrian Roberts from The Maple Trail, who also wrote one of the album’s songs.

It’s early days, but I think Kelly’s going to be one to watch this year.

Owl Eyes Announces Album Tour

Why yes, we are seeing a lot of Owl Eyes. And it seems like we’re about to see a lot more of her! I recently shared her new single “Closure” with you, and now I’ve got some tour dates to celebrate the launch of her debut album Nightswim. That album drops on April 19, which gives us just enough time to become comfortable with the songs before she graces stage around the country.

This is the first time Owl Eyes has toured around Australia since she sold out venues last May. Expect similar hysteria this time around, especially with exciting up and comers Mammals and Collarbones on support duties. In short, I wouldn’t wait too long before getting your tickets.

Bruce Mathiske Announces Biggest Tour for My Life Release

On April 5, guitar legend Bruce Mathiske will release My Life, his 17th studio album.

As its name suggest, My Life is an autobiographical work which sees Bruce looking back on his highest of heights and darkest lows. The songs see him reflecting on his personal and professional life in his own unmistakable style.

It seems Bruce can’t wait to share these very personal songs with his fans, as he’s preparing to set out on his biggest national tour to date. Aluka Tours Debut Album

They charmed me with their single “Keep My Cool” and their recent work with Tomas Strode & The Tour Guides. And now finally, Aluka have announced that their new album, Space, will hit stores soon.

Space sees Aluka three-piece experimenting with genre. There’s some jazz, some hip hop, some hymns, and even some good old fashioned pop music. The a capella three-piece shunned a traditional studio for far more interesting surrounds. What other act can say they’ve recorded at a swimming pool, a barn, and a World War II bunker? You can be the judge whether the girls’ daring has paid off when Space drops on April 5.

Aluka will support the album’s release with the following headline shows.

11 April 2013 – Camelot Lounge, Sydney
12 April 2013 – Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart
17 April 2013 – Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane
19 April 2013 – Nexus Arts Centre, Adelaide
3 May 2013 – Northcote Uniting Church, Melbourne

New Tim Guy Album About to Drop

I was so impressed last year when I heard “Armour Weight”, the first single from Tim Guy’s fourth album Dreaming of a Night Mango. It was laid back, free of pretention, and just beautiful. We get more of the same with Tim’s latest single “Many People I Know” You know what they say about not fixing what ain’t broke!

The song is a gentle number which Tim penned way back in 2011. He’d just moved back to Melbourne after living in Auckland, and he felt somewhat displaced in this town he once called home. It’s a slow burner, but a stunner nonetheless.

If you love these songs you’ll want to grab the album and see the shows. Dreaming of a Night Mango hits stores on April 5, which is not so coincidentally around the same time he’s setting off for a national tour. Here are all the places you can see him play!

4 April 2013 – Lock n Load Bistro, Brisbane (FREE)
5 April 2013 – Sol Bar, Maroochydoore (FREE)
6 April 2013 – Gov’s Espressso, Gold Coast

Creo Impress with “Monday Mourning”

Creo offer us an enticing taste of The Memo with the release of “Monday Mourning”.

I love the song’s so-raw-it-bleeds vocal and strong focus on melody. It’s definitely rooted in rock, but that melodic core makes it incredibly accessible. It’s lacking in polish, but I don’t necessarily see that as a negative. Instead I’m attracted by its raw realness. The Sydney lads have created an anthem here which sets the bar very high.

After hearing the single, I’m very keen to check out Creo’s The Memo. The band will launch that EP at the following shows around the country.

22 March 2013 – The Factory, Sydney
29 March 2013 – The Brewery, Byron Bay
30 March 2013 – Ric’s Bar, Brisbane
12 April 2013 – The Espy Basement, Melbourne
20 April 2013 – Goodgod Small Club, Sydney

Gerling Singer Goes Country with Jep and Dep

Darren Cross has put his days in Gerling behind him to forge a brand new alt-country duo with Jessica Cassar. Together they’re Jep and Dep, the talents behind this gorgeous new song “Ain’t Coming Back.”

I adore the way this number breathes new life into the tired old love song genre. There’s none of the whining and pining. Instead Jep and Dep sing about getting out at the right time and moving forward. Its lyrics are also as poetic as any I’ve heard of late. The track gives us a taste of what’s in store when the double act launches their debut EP, Through the Night, on March 13.

If you love what you hear, get your skates on. Jep and Dep will give music lovers a sneak peek at the EP when they headline a show at the Oxford Arts Factory tonight. If you’ve missed it don’t worry; they’ll formally launch their EP at the following shows.

17 March 2013 – Green Room, Enmore
23 March 2013 – Earth Hour @ Midnight Special, Newtown
7 April 2013 – Gasometer Hotel, Melbourne
12 April 2013 – Brisbane Hotel, Hobart
