Franny and Zooey Impress On Debut With “My Love”

When the voices and songwriting talents of Melbourne sisters Franny and Zooey combine, magic happens. Their debut single “My Love” is an incredible song that beautifully captures the heartache of a relationship gone bad.

The press release talks about how the sibling duo are exploring their sound and trying to find their own voice. If this is how things sound when they’re just trying to figure things out, I can’t imagine how much Franny and Zooey will blow me away when they do.

Kezra Transports Us To Another World With “Better Place

Melbourne singer-songwriter Kezra wears her heart on her sleeve with her new single “Better Place.”

Kezra’s vocals in this song are right on point, fragile yet strong with an angelic quality that draws you in. The song’s gorgeous lyrics imagine a lush, natural landscape which comes to life in the film clip, shot at Cape Woolami.

“It was a secluded beach with amazing landscapes and nobody around,” Kezra explained. “When I was there, I felt like if this ‘Better Place’ existed, this location would be it.”

Kezra sold out her recent single launch at Melbourne’s Ontop Bar, so expect big things from this talented Aussie.

5 Seconds of Summer Break Aussie Singles Drought With “Youngblood”

It’s taken nearly two years, but we’ve finally got another Aussie act on the top of the singles charts. 5 Seconds of Summer are sitting pretty with “Youngblood,” their second number one following “She Looks So Perfect.” We haven’t seen an Aussie act at number one on the singles charts since The Veronicas did it in July 2016 with “In My Blood.”

Could Amy Shark be the next Australian act to top the singles chart? She’s sitting at number eight, one spot higher than last week, with “I Said Hi.”

Post Malone is back on top of the albums charts with Beerbongs & Bentleys, denying Courtney Barnett a number one on debut. Her new album Tell Me How You Really Feel sits at number two, her highest chart position after her debut album peaked at number four and her collaboration with Kurt Vile hit number five.

Keith Urban is the only other Aussie in this week’s top ten. His new album Graffiti U sits at number seven this week, four down on its debut last week.

There are few things I enjoy better than a really good duet. When two talented musicians come together and connect over a song, magic happens. That’s just what we hear in “Footprints,” Perth singer-songwriter Robert Hinton’s current single. A duet with Kim Stolen, it’s a beautiful song with some of the most poetic lyrics I’ve heard in a while.

“Footprints” comes from Robert Hinton’s new album There Are No Winners Here, Only Beginners Here, which is out now.

Pretty City Rock Out With “Same as Before”

I’m really digging the big stadium rock vibes of Pretty City’s latest single “Same as Before.” Lifted from the Melbourne band’s sophomore album Cancel The Future, it’s pure, unadulterated rock that hits your heart and compels you to pound your fist in the air.

These guys already sound like they’re ready to play the world’s biggest venues. The band has already wowed crowds in the US and Europe this year, so hopefully that won’t be too far off. We haven’t lost them to the world just yet though Australia. Now that the European dates have wrapped up, Pretty City promises to play for crowds back home. Watch this space.

Dream on Dreamer Drop New Rocking New Single Ahead of Album Release

I don’t know how your Humpday is going, but mine is one that deserves some heavy rock. Big riffs and pounding drums, like those provided by Dream on Dreamer’s new single “Let It In,” are just perfect for echoing a little mid-week frustration.

“Let It In” comes from the Melbourne band’s fourth studio album It Comes and Goes, which is set to drop on May 25. The band say it’s their “most intimate and personal full-length to date,” so it’s sure to be something special.

Dream on Dreamer will waste no time bringing their new music to the masses, with dates all around the country this winter. Check them out at the following pubs and clubs.

Simon Paparo Sings of New Love in “Gold at Midnight”

Perth-born folk act Simon Paparo has charmed me with his new single “Gold at Midnight.” It’s such a sweet song, full of the hope and optimism you feel when a new love grows. The Claire Nica-directed clip, featuring a young couple basking in the sun and one another, is also so endearing.

“Gold at Midnight is inspired by my fiancé. She is a truly beautiful soul,” Simon gushed. “It is about us, a couple on their journey in the younger stages of courtship. It dives into my emotions early on in the relationship when I couldn’t talk about the feelings I felt for her, as it was too early and may have caused conflict.”

Simon will launch his single at the Workers Club in Melbourne on May 13. He says “Fans can expect a full and rich sound – I’ve been working closely with Charlie Heart who is a great songwriter, pianist and vocalist and have guitarist Paul Mason, bass guitarist David Kean and drummer Jon Ritchie ready to keep the fans ears alight. I’m really looking forward to hitting the stage with these amazing musicians. All of these guys are accomplished vocalists too, so I can’t wait to unleash these new tunes to everyone.”

“Pressure” Makes a Pop Gem For Georgia June

Sydney five-piece Georgia June is back with their new single “Pressure,” an irresistible slice of pop that speaks to anyone who’s ever felt pressured to choose a life path that wasn’t right for them.

“None of us ever want to be stuck in an office, yet I think when you’re young and trying to do music, everyone around you expects you to just be ‘realistic’ and have a backup plan of some sort,” explained the band’s eponymous frontwoman, Georgia June. “Which is why the video is set in a setting which we all are so scared of ending up in, just caving into what we should do and what’s expected. James Adams shot and edited the video, he created exactly what we had in our head and is always so on board with our ideas.”

This is such a fun track. It’s got a great retro sensibility that makes you want to reach for your hairbrush-microphone and take time for a dance break, no matter what you’re doing.

“Pressure” is set to appear on George June’s first full-length album later this year. They’ll play the Red Earth First Birthday Party at The Lady Hampshire in Camperdown on May 19.

Nothing Fishy About Neon Tetra’s New Single

Funky Adelaide outfit Neon Tetra are spreading good vibes with the release of their single “The End Begins Again.”

Taken from their forthcoming EP Pollen, “The End Begins Again” showcases the band’s commitment to feel-good music with infectious grooves. Josh Allen’s vocals seem to be able to go anywhere and that sax line is irresistible.

The music video sees Neon Tetra joining forces with Mickey Mason of Corduroy Productions.

“As soon as the music is ready, Mickey gets a first listen. Coming up with some wonderfully bizarre concepts that make the process a lot of fun. We’re big fans of his fresh produce,” the band said in the presser. “The music video is an expression of what the record is all about. Dancing, love and expressing yourself. Not taking life too seriously. The entire clip was shot on Super 8 film, creating a warming tone that ties in with the late ‘70s, early ‘80s pop feel of the release.”

Neon Tetra will celebrate the single’s release with the following shows, kicking off in their hometown this week.

Last year Sydney-based singer-songwriter Andrew Samuel wowed me with his single “Luck Feels Good.” It’s taken some time for the follow-up, but “New India Times” is worth the wait.

This track has such a great lazy groove and all the heart and soul that won me over the first time I discovered Andrew’s music. The dirty guitar solo is also right on point.
