Jack Biilmann Releases Killer New Single “The Hills Have Eyes”

Canberra-based bluesman Jack Biilmann has got me tapping my toes today with his new single “The Hills Have Eyes.”

It’s one of those tracks that grabs you from the get go. It’s honest and unpretentious, just bloody great music delivered from the heart.

“‘The Hills Have Eyes’” is a kick in a new direction from me,” Jack explained. “I wanted to do something that had the elements with what make me who I am as an artist with a new twist. It’s sure to come as a bit of a surprise, but is still a very ‘Jack Biilmann’ sounding song. The production from Kojo Ansah has really given this song exactly what I am after and I am so excited to release it and see its response.”

Jack is currently on the road promoting the single, stopping in at capital cities and regional centres all around the East Coast. Here are the remaining dates.

Bachelor Girl Are Back With “Speak”

Sometimes it takes a new song to remind you just how good a band is. Such is the case with Bachelor Girl, who are back on the scene 20 years after releasing the smash hit “Buses and Trains.” Their new single “Speak” explores the need for communication in the digital age. It also shows that decades on, Tania Doko and James Roche have still got “it.”

“I feel strongly that ‘Speak’ is the first offering back for the band – personally, it’s a wake-up call and hopefully a 3 minute 30 reminder out there that we’re humans, not just hashtags,” Tania explained.

“Imagine our world if we develop a group agreement that speaking the truth and acting with integrity is normal,” adds James.

Fans will be happy to hear this new track is no one-off. The duo says performing together at a Australia Day concert in 2016 reminded them how much they love making music together.

“[We] are so excited about the new songs,” James said. “It feels better than ever.”

A national tour and more music is in the works for later this year. Get excited Bachelor Girl fans!

Ocean Alley Continue Winning Ways With “Knees”

Sydney band Ocean Alley can seem to do no wrong, and the rest of the world is beginning to take notice. They’ve just dropped another stellar single, “Knees,” from their critically acclaimed sophomore album Chiaroscuro, and I can’t stop listening.

It’s the perfect blend of soul and rock, full of yearning and honesty.

Ocean Alley are currently in the midst of a massive North American tour. If you’re in that part of the world, here are the remaining dates. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we see some shows back here in Oz.

Maya Releases Bold New Single “Blackout”

Melbourne’s Maya might just have one of the most soulful voices in the country. It’s used to full effect on her latest single “Blackout.”

“Releasing this single has got to be one of the most exciting times of my career,” she said. “’Blackout’ means so much to me lyrically and I feel like the production is the next step sound that really represents my aesthetic … Most people have ‘blacked out’ before, whether it’s when they drink, if they black out a bad memory, or if they just forget certain things. This song takes you through my perspective and how I felt when it happened to me – it was inspired by so many moments of blackout in myself that I still fight every day.”

“Blackout” saw Maya collaborating with producer Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe, Meg Mac) and director Grace Moore, who helped her put together this dramatic video.

“The ‘Blackout’ video shows a cross between the dark reality and positive space,” Maya explained. “It captures a representation of the dark energies that are felt in those fragile times, juxtaposed with a bright, welcoming space that leads to happiness. The video, set the morning after the night before, features the Blackout Girls chasing me out of my dark memories until finally I arrive at a space where there is no black. There I’m free from the watchful eyes of the blackout, and surrounded by positivity and light.”

Maya is currently in New York City working with some of the world’s best writers and producers, but it won’t be too long before she’s back home putting the finishing touches on some fresh new music for us all.

Nick Summerfield Does Pop Right With New Single “Shelter”

Pop has gotten to be a bit of a dirty word in recent years. A few local artists like Troy Sivan, Sia, and The Veronicas have earned the respect of critics, but by and large pop has become a genre that’s easy to poke fun at. However, when done right pop music can be sublime. Sydney’s Nick Summerfield shows the Australian pop scene has another artist worth taking seriously with the release of his new single “Shelter.”

“Shelter is a story of my personal growth,” Nick explained. “I was in a pretty unhappy place when I started writing, but I knew the only person that could change that was me. The lyrics talk about facing truth and confronting yourself – I had to look at myself, my flaws and questioned if I was good enough during those times of instability and vulnerability.”

This is such good stuff. I can’t wait to hear more from this self-taught talent.

Press Club On Tour For Late Teens

Press Club haven’t long wrapped up a national tour with The Smith Street Band, but they’re already itching to get back on stage. The Melbourne indie punk-rock act will headline their own East Coast tour to celebrate the recent release of their debut album Late Teens and the single of the same name.

The song “Late Teens” drops with a music video celebrating the best of Australia. Featuring footage filmed on the band’s most recent lap of the nation, it’s the sort of thing that makes you pretty proud to hail from this wide brown land. It also shows you just what you can create from the back seat of touring vans and airport gate lounges!

Coming Out Inspires Maribelle’s New Single “I’m a Mess Without You”

Working as a singer, songwriter, and producer, Melbourne’s Maribelle knows what it takes to create a smash single. No wonder her latest track “I’m a Mess Without You” is catchy as all get out.

This pop gem is a fun, feel-good number, but dig a little deeper and you’ll discover it’s more than just an upbeat earworm. The track’s deeply personal lyrics reveal Maribelle’s journey embarking on a new relationship and coming to terms with her sexuality.

“I was hiding my feelings for somebody, and hurting them because I wasn’t being honest with myself,” Maribelle explained. “It’s actually about my current girlfriend and the early stages of our relationship. I was out in the club one night and had a ‘Days Of Our Lives’ montage of all of our memories together, and just realised what a mess I was being.”

With such immense talent and a killer pop sensibility, expect to hear plenty more from Maribelle.

Luca Brasi Offers Taste of New Album With “Let It Slip” Single

Luca Brasi, arguably Tasmania’s best rock act, have got me excited about their forthcoming new album Stay with the release of the single “Let it Slip.”

This track has everything you want from a rock track. Big bold guitars, driving drums, and passionate vocals. Tick, tick, tick. The film clip is also pretty fantastic. It’s a collaboration between the band, Taroona High, the school where Luca Brasi frontman Tyler Richardson teaches at when he’s not rocking out, and Canon Australia. In the clip, the tables are turned, with the band learning how to make a music video from the students. The video was shot as part of Canon’s youth development initiative.

Stay, Luca Brasi’s fourth studio album, hits stores on June 22. The band will celebrate its release with the following shows.

AMVN Honours Mums Everywhere With “Mama Don’t Worry”

The hip hop scene has long been criticised for disrespecting women, but there’s no sign of misogynism in AMVN’s new single. The Melbourne urban artist has teamed up with Chelcee for “Mama Don’t Worry,” a tribute to not just the woman who raised him but all the mothers who’ve dedicated their lives to raising families, often in difficult circumstances.

“It’s important that we appreciate women and that we appreciate the amount of effort they put in, especially mothers, just to make our lives that much better. I want to acknowledge my mother and the struggles she went through to take care of us,” AMVN explained.

The music video is beyond sweet, with AMVN visiting his own mama and surprising her with flowers and a full choir. Awww!
