The Vanns’ Rock Out With “How Was I Supposed to Know”

Wollongong rockers The Vanns have been wowing crowds all around the country on their current tour promoting new single “How Was I Supposed to Know.” They’re playing pubs at the moment, but with a sound this big it’s only a matter of time before they’re in stadiums.

“How Was I Supposed to Know” has everything you want from a rock song: dirty, chunky guitars, powerful vocals, and a chorus that will have you pumping your fist in the air from the first listen.

The track explores the emotions swirling when a relationship breaks down, and the clip, which puts you in the middle of an uncomfortable and explosive dinner date, is the perfect accompaniment.

The Vanns have one more show on their current tour, their first since May. If you’re in the area, catch them at the Festival of Fisher’s Ghost celebrations in Campbelltown on November 3.

Zap Releases Dreamy New Single “Legs and Arms”

With equal measures of romantic charm and quirk, Zap brings you their latest single “Legs and Arms.” The release is a truly international one; Zap is made up of two Aussies and a Greek who found their artistic groove in their adopted home of Berlin. The film clip, which is sure to make you giggle and also encourage you to book a Mediterranean holiday, took them to the Greek Islands.

Zap have a couple of shows in Berlin, so if you’re spending time in the German capital make sure you check them out. They’ll play Yorckschlösschen on November 2 and Artistania on November 23.

Glades Drop Another Awesome Track Ahead of Album Release

Sydney electro-pop trio Glades has just dropped a killer new cut from their forthcoming debut album, their banging new single “Eyes Wide Shut.” The track comes with an awesome video shot in Los Angeles and directed by Grey Ghost.

“Eyes Wide Shut” is the fourth track lifted from Glades’ debut album To Love You, which will be released on November 2. Glades will celebrate its release with shows around the country at the following venues. Get your tickets while you can; I don’t think these guys will be playing venues as small as these forever!

Levi’s & Support Act Release Web Series For Music Industry Mental Health

Levi’s and Support Act have teamed up to help improve mental health in the local music industry. Together they’ve created Tune Ups, a six-part webseries offering tips on mindfulness and other strategies to combat mental health concerns while highlighting the new Wellbeing Helpline for people working within the music industry. The online videos feature appearances from key music industry figures including Briggs, Alex the Astronaut, Joel Birch from Amity Affliction, and heaps more. Take a look at the video below to learn all about it.

“We are very grateful to Nicky Rowsell and Levi’s for being the driving force behind the campaign,” said Clive Miller, the chief executive officer of Support Act. “Tune Ups highlights how important it is for all of us to be aware of our mental health, and provides some great examples of how people in our industry manage their wellbeing. We hope it inspires anyone who may be doing it tough to know that they are not alone, and that they can reach out to our free, confidential Wellbeing Helpline at any time on on 1800 959 500 if they want to talk to someone about any aspect of their wellbeing.”

You can find the videos on the Support Act website, Vice Music channel Noisey, and other social platforms. While they’re made for music industry professionals, there’s plenty there for anyone who’s struggling with mental health issues. Ruel Support Dylan Joel Embraces Positivity With “Hollering Love”

Melbourne singer-songwriter-rapper Dylan Joel is wowing crowds with his sets supporting Ruel all around the country. Listening to his banging new single “Hollering Love,” it’s not hard to see why. The track reminds me of what Ed Sheeran and Justin Timberlake might release if they ever collaborated. It’s got such a great groove and positive vibe about it, you can’t help but like it.

“I’ve been told by people in the music industry, that it’s not cool to talk about positive things. That it’s cooler to act like you don’t care and instead, talk about the dark shit in our lives,” he admitted. “I feel sorry for the people who feel that way. I believe that in a world full of so much hate, loving is the biggest act of rebellion. This song is inspired by the incredibly talented, kind, loving and fly AF friends that I have, making this movement of love real.”

Clea Releases Powerful New Pop Song, “Dreaming”

Brisbane singer-songwriter Clea has released a fantastic new single “Dreaming,” the latest cut from her forthcoming debut album Vermillion.

On the surface this song seems like an ear-pleasing pop ditty. Clea’s voice is so angelic and it’s got a gorgeous melody. But tune in to those lyrics and you’ll discover this song is an anthem for the Me Too movement.

Shorelines Drop Stellar New Single Ahead of New EP Release

Brisbane band Shorelines haven’t released new music since December last year, but they’re rewarding the patience of their fans with a brand new track, “Worry About Yourself,” the first track lifted from their sophomore EP, Blank Pages & Broken Records.

“Worry About Yourself” sounds like an instant pop-punk classic, with its big chunky riffs and singalong chorus. The band describes it as “our rock anthem from our side of negative and unnecessary conflict, explaining that we will keep creating our own path the way we feel is right for us, and that others should just focus on themselves.”

Shorelines generated major buzz for their debut EP New Heights, scoring a support slot with Real Friends, more than a million Spotify streams, and a declaration from Alternative Press that they would “soon be rising to the top of this generation’s pop-punk offerings.” Not bad for a self-managed, self-released act from Brissie! Surely even bigger things are in store once the new EP reaches our ears.

We don’t have too long to wait, with Blank Pages & Broken Records slated for an October 5 release. Hopefully a tour announcement won’t be too far behind!

Trey Cooper Wows Me With “Howling”

Sunshine Coast muso Trey Cooper has thoroughly charmed me with his new single “Howling.” If you love a good acoustic-driven pop-rock track, you’re going to eat this up too.

It’s got a great radio-friendly sound, but tap into those lyrics and you’ll hear a little darkness. Trey has flipped the classic love song on its head here, turning it into something a bit moodier and more haunting. And can we just take a moment to appreciate his voice, which seems to have no barriers. His effortless command of his instrument is reminiscent of Jeff Buckley or Matt Corby. I love that rather than releasing a fancy video where he lip-synced, Trey has released a back-to-basics live studio video as the official film clip.

Trey regularly gigs around Southeast Queensland. Hopefully it won’t be too long before he ventures out for a national tour.

Dragon Does Countdown Hits at Crown

Legendary adopted Aussie act Dragon are ringing in the silly season with a very special show at Melbourne’s Palms on Crown. Called The Best of Countdown Chartbusters, the gig will take the audience on a trip down memory lane with songs from the Countdown era. Songs like this!

Along with all your favourite Dragon hits, you can expect to hear covers of some smash singles from the United Kingdom, America, and Australia. Think the songs of Michael Jackson, The Knack, David Bowie, Little River Band, and Madness, to name just a few, done as only Dragon can.

“When we go to the merch desk and talk to the crowd and do photos, everyone is so connected to Countdown,” explained bassist Todd Hunter. “You can really see how the show affected their lives.”
There’s not a lot of lead time on this one, with tickets going on sale tomorrow morning at 9am from Ticketmaster for the December 21st gig.

Tom Thum Releases Fascinating New TEDx Talk

Do you know who’s behind the most watched TEDx talk ever? A politician perhaps, or social activist? No, it’s Brisbane beatboxer Tom Thum, who clocked up more than 66 million views on his first TEDx talk. With his first talk going gangbusters, expect a lot of eyeballs on his latest TEDx talk “What Happens in Your Throat When You Beatbox.”

The talk sees Tom teaming up with Dr Matthew Broadhurst for an up-close and personal look on what the body does when it’s beatboxing. It’s the first time in the world a doctor has ever performed a live on stage laryngoscopy on a beatboxer, a practice that will reveal more about Tom Thum than you’ve ever seen before!

Tom’s own curiosity inspired the presentation. “Basically I wanted to get a deeper understanding (in the most invasively literal way) of how my artform worked,” he explained. “I realised that beatboxing had been relatively understudied compared to other vocal styles and I wanted to be part of the story in my own weird way.”

Turn it on and I promise you won’t be able to look away! Science meets music in this fascinating TEDx talk.
