“Talking With Strangers” – MAXON

With every single release, Victorian singer-songwriter MAXON has been building a reputation as one of the most solid female voices on the scene. Now that her debut album Talking With Strangers is out in the world, there’s no doubt that she’s the real deal.

As someone with eclectic music taste, I appreciate the diversity of Talking With Strangers. MAXON delights in exploring different sounds. It all seems so effortless for her to move from raucously upbeat numbers like “18” and “Yabada” to heartbreaking ballads like “Best Shot” and the stunning closer, “Circles.” Often she plays in an Americana/country/folk space, but she isn’t afraid to throw us curveballs, like the synth-heavy retro pop-inspired “Tangerine Dream.”

While Talking With Strangers takes plenty of musical left turns, the album never gives listeners whiplash. It’s anchored so beautifully by MAXON’s voice. It’s rich, warm, comforting, authentic, steady. You know you’re in safe hands listening to her, so you’re open to wherever these songs take you. And then there’s MAXON’s exceptional songwriting skills. She’s a natural, writing songs that speak to the heart of her experiences as a woman and member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Together, they do an exceptional job of introducing MAXON to music lovers.

Talking With Strangers is out now. MAXON will officially launch her debut album with a hometown show at The Toff on May 7.

MAXON Calls for Unity With “Everybody”

In a world where there seems to be so much division, MAXON’s new folk-rock track “Everybody” is like chicken soup for the soul. It’s an uplifting anthem that reminds us of the humanity that unites us all.

“A lot of the songs on the album – while hopeful – carry a thread of sadness,” MAXON said. “‘Everybody’ felt like the emotional homecoming. Nay [Pattuwage] and I wanted to write something that celebrates love and connection; something that uplifts.

“I’ve been through dark spaces in my life, and I know first-hand that singing together is healing. ‘Everybody’ is a reminder that joy and love are just as infectious as pain. Let this song be an anthem for togetherness. Honestly, I’d love to make a world choir with this one – send me your audition tapes! Let’s heal the world together!”

MAXON’s debut album Talking With Strangers will be released April 8. Expect to hear more new music from the LP when Maxon plays the following festivals:

MAXON Impresses With “18”

Gloomy winter weather has well and truly set in, but I’ve got a big smile on my face after listening to “18,” the latest single from Boonwurrung Country/Mornington Peninsula artist MAXON. Closing my eyes, it transported me to a road trip, somewhere warmer, somewhere far from the 9-to-5 grind, somewhere with endless possibilities. While listening is a joy, make sure you don’t miss the insightful lyrics.

“When you’re 18, all you want is to be a little older,” Max said. “And when you’re older, the industry wants you to be 18 again. I wanted to write this to remind myself – and anyone who needs to hear it – that age is nothing, and music is everything.”

While MAXON’s talents are front and centre, “18” is really a community effort. It features Mia Dyson on guitar and backing vocals, and a choir of locals including Kerryn Fields, Mathilde Anne, and Cousin Leonard.

“18” is the first single from MAXON’s debut album Talking With Strangers, which we should hear early next year.

MAXON Drops Stunning New Single, “Best Shot”

Melbourne singer-songwriter MAXON speaks for anyone who’s ever felt the weight of societal pressure with her latest single “Best Shot.” She was inspired to write the track after a conversation with her family about pursuing a career in psychology because she’d given music her “best shot.”

The lyrics are so powerful and the song’s simple instrumentation ensures they really shine through. I also love MAXON’s voice, so rich and dripping with gravitas.

MAXON will play a string of shows in her hometown to celebrate the release. Discover more of her music at the following venues:

8 July 2021 – Small Time, Brunswick (to be streamed live on Facebook)
24 October 2021 – Sooki Lounge, Melbourne (supporting Alexis Naylor)
31 October 2021 – Swamplands Bar, Melbourne (supporting Alexis Naylor)

MAXON Stuns With “History”

MAXON has stolen my heart with her powerful new single “History.” It’s one of those tracks that just stops you in your tracks with the right combination of emotional lyrics and gut-wrenching vocals.

“I have done so much growing over the past two years and I think ‘History’ is simply a diary entry in a melody. This song is the first step I’ve ever taken towards bravery and self-acceptance,” MAXON reflected. “It’s long over-due and represents a major turning point in my life and I hope my career as well. I’m breaking free from a long standing history of self-doubt, inflicted upon me throughout my life, and I’m burning all those bridges behind me to focus on a productive future full of bravery and self-love. It’s extremely hard to live a full and happy life when a person you love is constantly putting you down. I’m learning to reflect those things now and accept everyone for who they are – because we don’t know what they’ve been through to get to that point. And in turn, accept myself and reward myself more for the progress I am making with my mental health.”

The clip, directed by MAXON and filmmaker Josh Mitchell-Frey, is also so special. Shot in the Australian bush, its single take provides an unflinching look at the raw emotion driving this stunning song.

MAXON will celebrate the release of “History” with a show for hometown music lovers at Melbourne’s Paris Cat Jazz on November 22.

“I’m really excited about the launch,” she confirmed. “I just feel better when I sing – doesn’t everyone? Music is the one thing that brings us all together – I have good friends Ruby Gill, NUSSY, Plazza, Eaglemont and Magnets joining me on the night, performing renditions of both songs from my catalogue and their own. It’s a two-hour show with an intermission and it’s going to be full of harmonies and empowering female pop music. I’m so excited to get stuck into rehearsals!”

If you’re in Melbourne next Thursday, make sure you check it out!
