Amber Farnan Shares Personal Illness Journey With “When I Get Better”

Amber Farnan has blown me away with her personal new single, “When I Get Better.” Through this beautiful indie-pop ballad, she shares the pain and acceptance of living life with chronic illness.

“There’s a kind of loneliness that doesn’t come from being alone, but from watching life move without you. ‘When I Get Better’ is a song born from that space,” Amber explained. “‘When I Get Better’ sits inside a kind of grief that’s harder to name, the feeling of growing up while also being held back. Written from the experience of living with chronic illness, the song reflects on years spent in and out of hospital, stretches of time bed-bound, and the quiet realisation that parts of adolescence weren’t just missed, but taken. Not postponed. Not waiting. Gone.

“There’s something particularly confronting in recognising that no matter what happens next, you don’t get those years back. The song lives in that feeling of being robbed of something you can’t replace. At its core, ‘When I Get Better’ isn’t just about illness, it’s about what it means to hold onto the idea of a future version of yourself when the present feels uncertain. It captures that persistent belief that things might change, and the emotional weight of carrying that belief for years.”

The release of “When I Get Better” marks an exciting return to the music scene for Amber, who last gave us her EP The Motions in 2022. Listen out for more new music from this talented singer-songwriter in the months ahead.

Amber Farnan and Nick Keogh Team Up For “Bolt From the Blue”

If you’ve followed this blog for any length of time, you know I’m a sucker for a great duet. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that I’m really digging “Bolt From the Blue,” Amber Farnan’s new song featuring Nick Keogh. Nick also cowrote the song with Amber over multiple Zoom sessions. How good is technology?

Amber calls the song “an ode to the wonderful fever dream that is the early stages of a romance.” It’s certainly got that sense of magic about it. I also love the way Amber’s pure vocal tones complement Nick’s huskier sound.

“Bolt From the Blue” comes from Amber’s EP The Motions, which drops on September 1.

Amber Farnan Embraces Softer Side With “Muse”

Cairns indie-pop songstress Amber Farnan has won me over with her sweet new single “Muse.” It’s a dreamy romantic track, the sort of song Amber could never have imagined writing when she began creating music.

“Twelve-year-old Amber promised herself that she would never write a love song. Nineteen-year-old Amber finally caved,” she admitted.”’Muse’ was written around the notion of being inspired by someone, with them ultimately being your source of inspiration towards creativity as an artist. Whether its poetry, art, theatre or dance, both modern and historic art forms utilise muses as their inspiration.

“I would like for listeners to be able to relate to the song in some way, whether that be through shared experience or through hopes and dreams. I think that ‘Muse’ has a universal feeling of relatability and no matter who you are, I am damn sure you have dreamed about someone falling in love with you before.”

Amber will launch the single and its music video at The Tanks in Cairns on March 4. Click here for tickets.
