Gabriella Cilmi Tops Singles Charts

It seems Australia’s sweet on Gabriella Cilmi. The teen sensation has topped the ARIA charts this week with her catchy tune “Sweet About Me,” knocking Flo Rida’s “Low” from the number one possie.

The bluesy pop number, which the talented 16-year-old co-wrote, is the debut single from her soon to be released first album Lessons to be Learned. If “Sweet About Me” is any indication, this album’s going to be massive.

Faker’s “This Heart Attack” has had another lease of life, jumping from number 18 back into the top 10. It’s sitting pretty at number 9.

Canadian crooner k.d. lang’s earned her first number one for Watershed. What I’ve heard of this album is breathtaking, so it’s really well deserved.

Cut Copy are the only Australian band to make an appearance in the top ten. Their former chart topper In Ghost Colours is hanging onto the tenth position.

Here’s all this week’s chart action.

Gyroscope Debut at Number One

When I interviewed Gyroscope’s Zoran Trivic last month about their new album Breed Obsession he said “We have a feeling that this could possibly be the most important record of our music careers.” That prediction’s turned out to be true with the album grabbing the top spot in its first week on the ARIA album chart.

The band knocked Jack Johnson from the number one possie, an amazing feat considering the American singer songwriter is currently touring the country.

Gyroscope are so excited about their new material they’re taking it on the road in May with the Breed Obsession tour. Tickets to all the shows go on sale on April 3 from the usual outlets.

2 May 2008 – Bar 388, Brisbane (18+)

18 May 2008 – The Hi-Fi Bar & Ballroom, Melbourne (Under 18s only, doors 1 pm)

Speaking of the charts, Gyroscope aren’t the only Aussies to taste ARIA glory this week. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ newie may have slipped a few places, but Dig, Lazurus, Dig!!! is still sitting at a very respectable number 5. The singing Christians from Hillsong United have leapt into the charts with their new album With Hearts as One debuting at number 8. The Veronicas round out the top 10 with their double platinum disc Hook Me Up.

Axle Whitehead’s debuted at number 8 with his brilliant first single “I Don’t Do Surprises.” But he was pipped to the number 7 spot by Chris Lilley’s alias Mr G and his novelty song “Naughty Girl.”

Kylie’s Got the "X" Factor

Kylie Minogue has burst back onto the albums charts this week with a number-one debut. Her tenth studio album X is sitting pretty at the top of the ARIA charts in a big week for Aussie artists.

Her single “2 Hearts” has slipped to number nine this week, just behind The Veronicas’ “Hook Me Up” at eight.

Kylie’s album outperformed another Aussie legend, Jimmy Barnes, who debuted at number three with Out of the Blue.

These massive albums have pushed Human Nature’s Motown tribute, Get Ready, to number five this week. They sit just ahead of Delta Goodrem’s Delta at number six.

Aussies have also claimed the last three spots in the top ten. Guy Sebastian’s The Memphis Album is at number eight, ahead of Keith Urban’s greatest hits record 18 Kids at nine, and the revamped Young Divas’ outfit at number 10 with New Attitude.

But the real surprise this week was the performance of Australian Idol Natalie Gauci’s debut single “Here I Am.” A number two debut isn’t a disaster by any means, but it’s the first time an Aussie Idol has failed to claim the top spot in its first week.

Here’s this week’s complete Aussie top 10.

The new Veronicas’ album Hook Me Up fell from number to two to number seven, and David Campbell’s Swing Sessions 2 is sitting at number 10.

Veronicas Hook Number One Spot

Aussie poppettes The Veronicas have earned their first number one single this week. Their catchy electronic track “Hook Me Up” climbed three places to take out the top spot on the ARIA charts.

But they couldn’t topple country rock veterans The Eagles, who remain at the top of the album charts with their latest effort, Long Road Out of Eden. The Veronicas’ new album, also called Hook Me Up, is sitting pretty at number two.

It was another strong week for local lass Delta Goodrem whose single “In This Life” is currently sitting at number five on the singles charts. Her new album Delta is at number three.

David Campbell is back doing what he does best with The Swing Sessions 2. The classic covers album debuted at number eight on the album charts, just ahead of fellow Aussies Sneaky Sound System and The John Butler Trio.

Delta Bags Another Number One

Aussie golden girl Delta Goodrem knocked Matchbox Twenty off the top spot when her new album Delta debuted at number one this week. The single “This Life” is holding firm at number three after spending a couple of weeks at the top of the singles charts.

Local dance act Rogue Traders are also making their presence felt on the ARIA charts. Their second album Better in the Dark has slipped from number four to number five this week. “Don’t You Wanna Feel” is holding steady at number 10 on the singles charts.

The Veronicas haven’t released their new album yet, but if the success of “Hook Me Up” is any indication it’s going to be another chart topper. After five weeks in the top ten, it’s still sitting pretty at number five on the charts.

Delta’s Lively New Hit

Delta Goodrem has proved she’s the comeback queen. Her new single “In This Life” has debuted at number one on the ARIA singles charts. This is Delta’s eighth Australian number one, but she hasn’t had a hit since “Almost Here” in 2005.

She joins Ricki-Lee whose dance hit “Can’t Touch It” is sitting at number 10 after seven weeks.

The album charts saw another impressive Australian debut. Shannon Noll’s latest album, Turn It Up, has landed at number three. The only other Aussies in the album charts are The Waifs. Their newie, Sun Dirt Water, slipped from number three to number eight this week.

Fergie Tops Aussie Charts

Aussies just can’t get enough of pop diva Fergie. Her single “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and album The Duchess are both sitting pretty at number one on the ARIA charts.

The ladies are doing well on the charts, boosted by recent high profile tours. Gwen Stefani’s The Sweet Escape bounced back into the top 10, while Christina Aguilera’s Back to Basics jumped from number nine to six.

It seems like “Girlfriend” was number one forever (or was it just me?). I wonder whether Avril Lavigne’s newie “When You’re Gone” will do just as well? It’s debuted at a respectable number five.

Grinspoon, Powderfinger, and Lee Kernaghan are flying the flag for the Aussies in the album charts. Alibis & Other Lies is at number four, just ahead of Dream Days at Hotel Existence at number five and Spirit of the Bush at number eight.
