Hilltop Hoods Make Number One Debut

Way to go Hilltop Hoods! The local hip hop outfit has debuted at number one on the ARIA charts with their fifth studio album State of the Art. The disc more than doubled sales of last week’s number one, The E.N.D. by The Black Eyed Peas.

The album sold a whopping 27, 455 units, well ahead of the Black Eyed Peas’ 11, 803 units. Hilltop Hoods must be feeling pretty chuffed with that effort, particularly since it’s their first release on their own Golden Era Records.

They’re sharing space in the top ten with Eskimo Joe, whose Inshalla album is still going strong at number five, and Karnivool’s Sound Awake which sits at number seven.

Meanwhile on the singles charts, Jessica Mauboy’s flying the Australian flag. Her latest single “Because” has debuted at a respectable ninth place.

Eskimo Joe Tops Albums Charts with "Inshalla"

Aussie rock trio Eskimo Joe is sitting pretty at the top of the ARIA charts with their fourth release Inshalla. The album debuted at number one, ending Eminem’s two-week reign with Relapse.

It’s an amazing achievement for the local lads considering how many massive albums are selling by the truckload. Pink’s massive Aussie tour kept her Funhouse album at number three, while Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown slipped to number four.

“We’re honoured to be in this position on the charts and owe it all to our great fans, some who have been with us through our entire career and others that have just discovered us recently,” said Eskimo Joe lead singer Kav Temperley.

Bushfire Aid Trumps Lily Allen

The ARIA album charts might say Lily Allen’s claimed this week’s top spot with It’s Not Me, It’s You. But that’s not the whole story.

Bushfire Aid: Artists for the Bushfire Appeal was only on sale for four days of last week’s chart period, yet it outsold Lily’s sophomore effort two to one. But because it is a compilation album, it does not register on the album charts.

“The music industry has united together to support Sony Music Bushfire Aid release,” said Denis Handlin AM, Chairman and CEO of Sony Music. “The support of the artists, songwriters, music companies, music publishers, Sony DADC manufacturing and media partners has been fantastic.”

All artists involved in the project will donate their royalties to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. The double-disc is expected to raise more than $200, 000.

If you don’t have your copy yet, why not? You can pick it up from music stores across Australia or online no matter where in the world you are.

Jessica Mauboy Burns Up the Charts

Jessica Mauboy’s second solo single “Burn” has proven its slow burn appeal, landing at the top spot on the ARIA singles charts this week. With the single debuting eight weeks ago, I’ll bet Jess wondered if she’d ever score that number one!

It’s been a much more meteoric rise for Natalie Bassingthwaighte, who’s rocketed into ninth position with “Someday Soon.” What an awesome effort for its first week in the charts!

AC/DC continue their dominance, outperforming all other Aussie albums with the five-times platinum Black Ice. It’s sitting at number four after thirteen weeks in the charts.

The massive Aussie soundtrack from the even bigger series Packed to the Rafters sits at number eight. Featuring acts like Ben Lee, Josh Pyke, and Gabriella Cilmi it’s little wonder people are buying this one in droves. It sounds like ideal Australia Day barbie music to me!

David Campbell rounds out the top 10 with one of my favourite albums at the moment, Good Lovin’. This is the sixties soul cover album’s highest chart position to date!

Australian Idol Winner Wes Carr Tops ARIA Charts

Congratulations to Wes Carr, who’s finally landed the number one spot on the ARIA Charts with his debut single “You”! Wes has been hovering around the pointy end of the charts for the last couple of weeks, so it’s great to see him on top.

I can’t help wondering whether Wes’ slow burn appeal means he’s likely to have a longer career than the Australian Idols who soared straight to number one, only to plummet just as quickly. Only time will tell! Wes is the only local artist in the Aussie top 10.

International acts are also dominating the albums charts, with only AC/DC and Hamish and Andy earning a place in the top ten. Black Ice is sitting comfortably at number three, while Hamish and Andy’s Unessential Listening is just behind at number four.

Gabriella Cilmi Back at Number One

With all the excitement of Jason Mraz’s tour announcement yesterday, I forgot to check the ARIA charts. So I did it today,Gabriella Cilmi and I was thrilled to see Gabriella Cilmi has taken back to the top spot with “Sweet About Me.” She ousted the powerhouse duo of Madonna and Justin Timberlake to do it, so it’s no mean feat!

Aussie girls seem to be the flavour of the month at the moment. Vanessa Amorosi’s climbed on spot with “Perfect.””She’s happily sitting at number nine, just ahead of The Veronicas’ super catchy new sopfest “This Love.”

And the album charts are jam-packed with Australians! Mum’s favourite Andre Rieu is still sitting at number one with his Aussie inspired album Waltzing Matilda.

But Damien Leith’s Catch the Wind: Songs of a Generation isn’t too far behind! It’s at number two, just ahead of golden girl Gabriella Cilmi’s newie Lessons to be Learned.

A little further down the charts we’ve got The Presets still hanging around with Apocalypso at number six. They’ve swapped places this week with Carl Riseley’s crooning covers CD The Rise.

Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson have fallen to number eight with Rattlin’ Bones, just ahead of Kate Ceberano’s newest covers collection So Much Beauty.
