Gotye Stays on Top of Singles Charts

Gotye has now achieved a massive eight consecutive weeks on top of the Aussie singles charts with his monster song “Somebody That I Used to Know.” The track, which features Kimbra on guest vocals, is now an impressive four times platinum. It’s also the only Aussie song to sit inside the top ten, or even the top twenty. I’m not sure what’s helped Gotye cut through in this chart which is generally dominated by international acts, but I’m impressed.

His album Making Mirrors has fallen a few spots to sit at number four, but with impressive debuts from Blink 192 and Tony Bennett, not to mention the staying power of the seemingly invincible Adele, this is still a fair effort. All that new chart action has also seen The Jezabels slip from number two to nine with their debut Prisoner.

Gotye On Top Again

Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” is proving unstoppabable, taking out the number one possie on the ARIA charts for an incredible seventh consecutive week. It’d be getting boring if he wasn’t an Aussie with the support of the country behind him. His album Making Mirrors is also performing impressively, slipping down one to land at number three this week.

I’d bitch and moan about the slide if an Aussie band wasn’t behind it. The Jezabels have zoomed into the charts with a number two debut for their first album, Prisoner. Pete Murray is also hanging on to the top ten. His newie Blue Sky Blue has dropped from six to nine this week.

Gotye Still on Top of Singles Charts

Gotye has done it again, taking the top spot on the ARIA Singles Charts for an amazing sixth consecutive week with “Somebody That I Used To Know.” That makes it the longest reigning local chart topper since Savage Garden racked up eight weeks with “Truly Madly Deeply in 1997. It’s also deservedly earned triple platinum status.

His album Making Mirrors isn’t doing too badly either, holding steady at number two. Pete Murray’s Blue Sky Blue has also stayed the course and remained at number six for a second week. Sadly Icehouse’s greatest hits compilation White Heat: 30 Hits slipped down to number eight, but I predict it’ll jump back up once that Hall & Oates tour kicks off.

Gotye Makes It Five in a Row

Gotye’s made it five in a row after retaining the top spot on the ARIA Singles Charts again this week. In doing so “Somebody That I Used to Know” has enjoyed the longest stay at the top of any Aussie single since Gabrielle Cilmi clocked up five weeks with “Sweet About Me” in 2001. The last act to better the feat was Savage Garden who spent eight weeks on top in 1997 with “Truly Madly Deeply.” Can Gotye better the Brisbane duo?

The single’s success has also helped Gotye’s album Making Mirrors jump back to number two this week, up one spot from last week. He’s sharing time in the top 10 with fellow Aussies Pete Murray, who sits at number six with Blue Sky Blue, and Icehouse who’ve slipped only a couple of spots to number seven with White Heat: 30 Hits.

Gotye Dominates ARIA Charts

Gotye has scored a chart doubler, taking out the top spots on both the ARIA singles and albums charts.

His single “Somebody That You Used To Know” doesn’t show any sign of budging, taking out the number one possie for the third consecutive week. The album Making Mirrors zoomed into the top spot on the album charts on its debut after selling a massive 35, 000 copies. It’s the first album to achieve these kind of weekly sales all year, and has deservedly received gold status. Something tells me it won’t be too long til it breaks platinum.

An Australian act hasn’t achieved the double since Silverchair did it back in April 2007 with “Straight Lines” and Young Modern. Congratulations Gotye on breaking the drought!

This week isn’t all about Gotye though. After the album charts were looking a little bare, it’s now crowded with Aussie talent. Australia’s Got Talent winner Jack Vidgen achieved an impressive number three debut with his album Yes I Am, beating out Josh Pyke’s newie Only Sparrows which sits at number four. And Boy & Bear are still hanging in there; Moonfire sits at number 9.

Now if only some of those albums can spawn some charting singles! Gotye is currently keeping company with Jessica Mauboy in the top 10. Her latest track “Inescapable” has slipped one and sits at number 5 this week.

Gotye Still on Top of Singles Charts

Gotye has continued his reign at the top of the ARIA singles charts this week. “Somebody That I Used to Know” is still sitting pretty at the number one spot, despite strong competition from Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera’s “Moves Like Jagger.”

Jessica Mauboy is also holding steady at number four with her newie “Inescapable.” And it’s worth noting that we’ve even got a chart presence rounding out the top 10. David Guetta might take top billing on “Titanium,” but we all know it’s our Sia that makes it really special.

The albums charts still belong to Adele, but the Aussies are making their presence felt. Eskimo Joe have blasted into the number three spot with their fifth studio album Ghosts of the Past.

Boy & Bear have slipped to number four, but Moonfire is still performing well after last week’s number two debut.

And it’s great to see Jessica Mauboy’s Get ‘Em Girls back in the top 10. The album wasn’t even in the top 50 last week, but it’s zoomed back to number 9, no doubt buoyed by the success of “Inescapable.”

Gotye Tops Aussie Singles Charts

It’s been sometime since the Aussies had any joy at the top of the ARIA singles charts. Since Guy Sebastian held the title in January, in fact. But Gotye has finally broken Adele’s incredible seven-week reign to clinch the top spot with his track “Somebody That I Used to Know.” The song, which features Kimbra on guest vocals, jumped up from number three to number one this week.

He’s keeping company with Jessica Mauboy, who continues her chart-charming ways with her latest single “Inescapable.” And she’s done it with a track that doesn’t feature anyone else’s vocals! Very impressive on the modern chart landscape! “Inescapable” is sitting pretty at number four, a big jump from last week’s number 10 spot.

Boy & Bear are the lone Aussies waving the flag on the top 10 album’s charts. While they couldn’t budge Adele, who’s held the number one position for a whopping 14 weeks, their newly-released debut Moonfire has made its presence felt at number two.

Guy Sebastian Reclaims ARIA Number One

After being ousted from the top spot last week, Guy Sebastian has returned to the number one position on the ARIA Singles Charts this week with “Who’s That Girl.”

Again he’s keeping company with Jessica Mauboy, who’s holding on to the top 10 by her fingernails with “Saturday Night.”

There doesn’t seem to be any stopping Altiyan Childs, who is again holding down the number three spot on the album charts with his self-titled debut. Guy Sebastian is nipping at his heels though, with Twenty Ten moving up two places to sit at number six.

Aussies Impress in Aria Annual Top 100 Charts

ARIA has revealed its annual top 100 lists, and as it turns out we were a pretty patriotic lot this year.

There were 30 Aussie records in the albums charts, our best showing since 2007. Angus & Julia Stone’s Down the Way was the best charting local disc, landing the number seven possie. Considering its relatively late release, I was also impressed to see Altiyan Childs’ self titled debut sitting at number 19. He just edged out John Butler Trio’s April Uprising, which sat at number 20, and Birds of Tokyo’s self titled debut, which charted at number 24.

It was a less impressive year for Aussie singles, but we still managed to see 14 tracks in the top 100. Guy Sebastian did his bit with both “Who’s That Girl” (42) and “Art of Love” (90), while Yolanda Be Cool and DCup was the standout with “We Speak No Americano” at number 34.

Guy Sebastian Claims ARIA Number One

After nipping at Bruno Mars heels for a few weeks, Guy Sebastian has finally toppled him to take the number one spot on the ARIA singles chart with “Who’s That Girl.” It’s actually the first time we’ve seen an Aussie sitting at the top of the singles chart in 2010, and I couldn’t ask for a better way to end the year!

“Who’s That Girl” is Guy’s fifth Aussie number one, which means he now has more top selling singles than any other local male artist in history. For your interest, John Farnham and Johnny O’Keefe both had four a piece. Considering what big names they are, and where Guy is in his career, that’s some achievement.

Guy’s keeping company in the singles chart with fellow Australian Idol alum Jessica Mauboy. Her new party tune “Saturday Night” sits at number seven, up three positions from last week.

Meanwhile on the albums chart, Altiyan Childs has remained rock solid with his self titled album holding on to fourth position. I remember a time when that might be disappointing for a disc spawned from a reality show, but just look at the company he’s keeping. He’s mixing it with perennial favourites Pink, Susan Boyle, and Bon Jovi, and even outselling the likes of Rihanna, Michael Jackson, and Taylor Swift. I reckon that’s a fair effort.

Meanwhile Guy Sebastian’s greatest hits CD Twenty Ten has moved up one position to number six. It’s encouraging to see that while fans are getting behind the single, they’re also spending money on the long player.

Hopefully Guy can hold on to that top spot next week. What a great start to 2011 that would be!
