Kaiyah Mercedes Rocks Out With “3 Month Blackout”

Kaiyah Mercedes recalls a whirlwind relationship in all its angsty glory with their latest track “3 Month Blackout.” It’s raw and unfiltered, the kind of indie pop-rock single that encourages you to grab your hairbrush and let loose. I love the way its structure mimics the aftermath of a relationship, with moments of quiet reflection juxtaposed with unbridled emotional outpourings.

The music video for “3 Month Blackout” sees Kaiyah and her band crash-landing on a desert island. While surviving outside civilisation isn’t easy, at least it’s far removed from messy emotional entanglements! Kaiyah created the clip in collaboration with Francis from District Down Under.

Kaiyah will celebrate the release of “3 Month Blackout” with a launch show at Bergy Bandroom in Bulleke-bek/Brunswick on March 29.

SEETALI and Kaiyah Mercedes Release Beautiful Ballad, “Poison & Wine”

Naarm/Melbourne-based talents SEETALI and Kaiyah Mercedes have teamed up for a gorgeous new single, “Poison & Wine.” Raw and introspective, this beautiful ballad was designed as therapy for anyone struggling with openness and vulnerability.

“It’s a bittersweet truth about accepting not everyone’s going to be sorry, or care to the same extent you are and how for your own headspace you need to learn to accept that, and sometimes you need to be your own form of closure,” SEETALI said.

“Working with SEETALI means working with the full extent of my creativity,” Kaiyah added. “She brings out the most in the art and together we made a song that is truly special.”

This is the latest of several collaborations from SEETALI and Kaiyah. Hopefully they continue making such incredible music together in the future.

Kaiyah Mercedes Comes of Age With “If We Never Speak Again”

Teen wunderkind Kaiyah Mercedes is back with a gorgeous new single “If We Never Speak Again.” Now 17, Kaiyah shows she’s going from strength to strength since releasing her first album last year.

“‘If We Never Speak Again’ was written as a voicemail to express all my unsaid feelings about another person,” she explained. “I wrote the lyrics about my experiences but couldn’t think of anything for the bridge except a voicemail. This evolved into the chaotic soundscape you hear in the track’s bridge today and symbolises that feeling of helplessness and not knowing if that person will respond or even hear the message at all.”

Kaiyah says that the queer community has “Been a huge part of my self-discovery and as an LGBTQIA+ artist, my songwriting is a pure expression of the growth and confidence in myself to be who I truly am. Although I write sad songs, my aim is to connect with others through my deep and emotional lyrics, with an intent to support others through life’s struggles. I often write about grief, mental health, heartbreak and longing, all very relatable experiences.”

You can see Kaiyah making music at Bonbeach Farmers Market at Bonbeach Primary School, Bunurong Country/Bonbeach, on April 14.
